I’m new to this thread. I went Smith. As good as the Texan is, I feel an injured Smith impacts us more than an injured Walker. Does that come into play or is it just a who is better? I do tend to overthink things!
Strong post to avatar correlation

Loved Mark Stevens as a player. Joins the likes of many that were very good players but underrated compared to the genuine name stars of the team. However injuries killed his career.

Sloane however is way ahead. Was a way better player for longer. Forget his form now, he was an unquestioned star of the side for a decade something Stevens never was. Anyone voting Stevens is merely a protest vote for Sloane being on the list now. Sloane of the last 4 years is chalk and cheese to the Sloane for the previous decade.

Oooh first real tricky one

Stevens was an extremely good player. The injuries may have cut him down but he had a good string of B&F finishes in his time here.

Sloane playing stupidly through injury after injury because our club mistakes idiocy for bravery cost him dearly and knocks him down a peg. He was a willing participant in the club-and-player-destroying hijinks though, so I don't absolve him completely of blame, even though I mostly blame the coaches and selectors.

Sloane ahead, despite his career tailing off. His prime was quality and lengthy enough. Easy to forget

You Kidding right.

Lose Tex we are screwed. Plenty of options to replace Smithm

Smith was genuinely elite for a few minutes. He was fast and damaging with ball in hand and got it plenty. Then concussions and knee and he ended up with a career of an oboe average player that could wow here and there with the old dart. But nothing like he looked like being.

Stevens was one of the very best players in a premiership contending team, playing the most valuable position on the ground.

2nd in the B&F in 2001. In a team where the following players played 20+ games

McLeod
Ricciutto
Goodwin
Edwards
Darren Jarman
Nigel Smart
Ben Hart

That’s a LOT more impressive than winning in most years

Mark Stevens might be the most underrated player in our history

He was a more valuable player than Rory Sloane. Played a high value position at a high level in a contending team

BUT… I say more valuable deliberately with careful consideration because you can’t deny Sloane’s body of work. You just can’t.

Injury limited Stevens and his peak was about 4 fantastic years.

That’s not enough to overturn the longevity and body of work of Sloane.

It is enough to give a lot of thought to how this isn’t as one sided as you might think at first glance

I really liked Mark Stevens. He was the best big forward we had in that era which should have won another premiership with that midfield.

Couldn’t get his body right which was disappointing.

Lasting memory of Stevens has to be all those injuries. Laying on the ground at Waverley trying to whack his knee cap back into place Darren Cresswell style and it not going back in not knowing he just had to straighten up his leg and it would’ve gone straight back in.

Also even though he was a relatively ‘good-ish’ kick for goal I swear he hung around with Ian Perrie too much when at the Crows because his goalkicking action did turn a little awkward looking compared to when he first came over from North Melbourne.
