I hadn't seen this photo before. There is some history with the photo - this was the first time the premiership cup was awarded to the winning team (previous winners were given a flag the following year but no cup on the day).
Almost looks like the flag is drapped over the player holding the cup (forgiveness for not knowing who it is...)

So many stories here. The agony and the ecstasy, and Buddy, whose manager would tell the Sydney Swans in the coming days that Franklin wanted to play for them in 2014, and they had better get a deal together.

Wonder what was going through his head.

That can also be considered the catalyst for the three-peat. They had to experience the pain, to drive them to the glory.

Many of them still talk about how 2012 is a driving force.

Hassa Mann, I think - may be wrong. Great photo.

The player is Frank 'Bluey' Adams who, along with Ron Barassi, played in all 6 Melbourne premierships between 1955 - 1964.

I intially thought it was an Essendon jumper (Melbourne's opponent that day) draped over his shoulder, but it is more likely a flag (either the premiership one or a Melbourne one).

The other interesting thing in the photo is the tree you can see in the background. This was before the Ponsford Stand was built at the City End in 1968. Can't imagaine seeing a tree from the middle of the MCG now!

'scuse my ignorance, can you please explain this pic to me?

This photo was taken the night of Hawthorn's '76 GF final win, the guy in the centre is Peter Crimmins, our captain who was desperately ill with cancer at the time, and who died a day or two after this photo was taken.

Hawthorn's best and fairest award is named after Peter Crimmins. His jumper is the only one displayed in the Hawthorn museum (or in the club rooms). He wore the number 5. Many Hawks fans think that it is really fitting that Mitchell wears the number too.

It was retired for a fair while wasn't it?

Reckon Bucky would have kicked it anyway. He was a terrific set shot, and had the wind at his back (after kicking against it for the first three quarters).
I truly hope Northey apologised to Stynes after he'd cooled off. What a terrible weight for a young man to carry around, when it's quite possible (even likely) that it wouldn't have affected the result. That photo has never sat well with me.

I agree. Also, when you consider what an amazing person Stynes was...

Absolutely detested it. He coached us in our Herald Sun Shield side, one of the boys was being smart in a drill and said "Can't believe believe Mad Dog is coaching us", he cut that bloke instantly (was a spud anyway) and called us in and told us that we were to call him Rob or Coach only. Very serious about it :$

Sorry Mr. Mad Dog...
