This photo was taken the night of Hawthorn's '76 GF final win, the guy in the centre is Peter Crimmins, our captain who was desperately ill with cancer at the time, and who died a day or two after this photo was taken.

Thanks for posting! I was at that game, and sitting along the boundary nearest Ablett's mark too - I had to look closely in the background and see if I was in it.

I still feel privileged to have watched two superstars play on each other.

From memory Ablett was just too strong - he benchpressed Hird away whenever there was a legitimate 1-on-1 contest.

The Salmon-Gazza goal fest game.

Hird was like in his 3rd season or something and wasn't any where near the star he ended up being.

Gaz was going nuts and Sheedy put young Jimmy on the great man.

Ablett ended up kicking I think 4 of his nine on Hirdy and Hird himself has reflected on that day as one where he realised he had a lot of work to do getting to the elite level.

Typical Sheeds. He loved bringing a young gun back down to earth by putting them on unbeatable players.
