Rather than picking the Swans and the second best side, I thought it would be interesting to go a bottom 8 side.

Combining Sydney and West Coast would help a lot as we would get Barrass, McGovern, Allen and Waterman in the side which would really fix some structural weaknesses in the side, not to mention guys like Ried and Yeo and Ryan would all likely find spots. Would be a very good side.

Swans/Blues please

FB: Newman - Weitering - Blakey
HB: Lloyd - McCartin - Saad
C: Acres - Cripps - Gulden
HF: Warner - McKay - E. Hollands
FF: Hayward - Curnow - Papley
R: Grundy - Heeney - Walsh
INT: De Koning - Mills - Cerra - Florent

That team is insanely good. Every weakness the Swans have in tall defenders, tall forwards and the real clearance midfielders is a massive strength in this team.

Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast

Wilmot Collins Flanders
Zorko Andrews Andrew
McCluggage Dunkley Anderson
Cameron King Lohmann
Ainsworth Daniher Hipwood
McInerney Neale Rowell
Lukosius J-Berry Miller Rayner

I have actually wondered before what would happen if the AFL decided to go down to 9 teams instead of 18 and ruthlessly merged teams based on georgraphy and academy zones

West Coast/Fremantle
Adelaide/Port Adelaide
Sydney/GWS
Brisbane/Gold Coast
Richmond/Western Bulldogs
Geelong/North Melbourne
Essendon/St Kilda
Collingwood/Carlton
Hawthorn/Melbourne

and which of these combined teams would be the strongest or weakest.

Like this. Geographically, It would be

Western bulldogs/ Geelong
North/ Melbourne
Hawthorn/ Richmond

Wouldn’t it?

I was using this and seeing who had the biggest boarders with who

Id go with two of the suggestions already shared.

Sydney Carlton would be insane, and Sydney WCE would round out an already stacked Sydney side, whose main weakness is not having a clearance beast or AA quality talls (outside of Blakey and arguably Grundy).

For simplicities sake, just give me

Carlton: Walsh, Cerra, Cripps and the bookends of De Koning, Curnow, McKay, McGov and Weitering.

WCE: Reid, Yeo, Kelly, Barrass, McGovern, Waterman and possibly Allen.

Carlton and Dees imo

Weitering, May, Lever, Gawn, Walsh, Trac, Oliver, Cripps, Curnow, McKay is a deadly spine.
