Sorry mate, but if u think that Merrett is in the same conversation as Cripps, then u r clearly deluded. Cripps----daylight -----Merrett. I'm not saying that Zach isn't a great player, but the comparison to Cripps is laughable.

I can't see a 33 year old Zorko doing a lot of damage in the midfield, but he would be a really handy small forward, eating up Hipwood's crumbs. Hopefully we have an AA midfield of Berry, Rayner and Cluggs by then! Could be scary good in a few years mate.

I can't really dislike GWS due to yr very generous trade of Taranto for Cluggs and Berry. Was very nice of your club.
J. Cameron is a dirty dog though. Funny thing is, Brisbane could win it's fourth flag before GWS wins it's first lol. Pressure is on for your boys to step up on the big stage in the next couple of years. If not, would be one of the greatest flops of all time.

In their careers to date;
- Both have AA selection,
- Both have won their club BnF,
- Both have even been given the honour of captaining their team.
- Both average around 25 disposal per game. Merrett has 8 games of 37+ disposals, Cripps has 4.
- They have similar tackle averages.
- They have similar Brownlow votes.
- Merrett is a beautiful kick. Cripps is a beautiful get-and-give-off player.
In what world are they not in the same conversation?? I might put Cripps slightly ahead of Merrett but it’s not by much and certainly not by daylight or the length of a straight...

I appreciate the trouble u have gone to here, but what percentage of neutral football fans would select Merrett over Cripps? If given the opportunity to select Cripps or Merrett, how many club recruiters would call out Z. Merrett before P. Cripps? None, if any in my non-expert opinion. There are some major differences. Cripps carries his team. He is an absolute warrior and a great leader of men. Hard as a cats head and handles a tag much better. This is what brings the daylight.

I disagree. As I said above, Cripps might be ahead in most people’s view, especially seeing as his one season of 650 disposals is still fresh in people’s minds (despite Merrett’s 2016/17 season’s of 650 disposals), but they are in the same conversation. And the stats from above back up my original notion that he is a top tier midfielder.
A possible scenario is DeGoo and Beams rotating.
Why does Cripps get credit for carrying a team? Carlton won 2 games. Merrett carried Essendon's horrible side in 2016 to the same amount of wins as a 20 year old. Cripps can't be rated with the best of the best until he actually proves he's influencing games for a winning side.

What I'm getting from the Cripps-Merrett debate is both are elite midfielders, much loved by their clubs supporters.
I'd love to have both, very different players. Hard to compare such different skill sets.
Cripps is a contested ball winning beast, elite tackler, great size and provides a legitimate tall marking option.
Merrett is a ball magnet with silky skills, you want him taking that F50 entry pass.

We were also missing our best mid for 2 of the 3 encounters.
It’s just that one player is being rated well beyond the other purely on a subjective preference. The reality is that both players are top tier and anyone arguing against that based on careers thus far is the deluded one. Instead, I’ve been called deluded which I take objection to.

Blues supporters need to take something positive from last year though. The performance of Cripps is a shining light.
The comments have come from Tigers and Lions fans. I get that they can argue neutrality but they can’t argue against their subjective preference here. And yes, I rate Cripps very highly. The only Blue I’ll openly applaud.

I did miss it wasn't just Blues supporters.
Watch for the headlines and attention Merrett gets when you start winning finals. One of the things the Tigers flag did in 2017 was it meant a few of their players started getting the recognition they deserve in my view.
