Great write up Monocle, a club would be silly not to give this young kid a shot at the next level and with the resources they have to offer in that environment, I believe he could excel as a full time athlete! His versatility is another major plus for me. He has not played forward once this year, but for a few minutes on 1 or 2 occasions. A vast majority of his games has been spent off a half back flank, maybe a reason for the reduction in goals this season. Looking forward to seeing how he goes in the coming draft.Write up for George Hampson.
Pick 62. George Hampson. 188 cm 79 kg. Midfield / Forward. Subiaco.
George is a mature age player ( 23 ) but has only been in the WAFL system three years. Georges path way has been different to most as its rare that a WA player makes his way onto an AFL list if they haven't come through the Colts system. George rocked up to Subiaco at the start of the 2011 season relatively unannounced having played with Scarborough Football Club. Starting the 2011 season as an unknown he played 17 games in the reserves and kicking 25 goals. His reserves form showed enough to get him four games in the seniors at the end of the season ( He played in two finals one being the WAFL 2011 grand final. ) These four league games showed enough to suggest that he may well be a player of the future.
Hampson followed up in 2012 with a very good season playing 19 league games mainly on a HFF or on the wing. He kicked 22 goals for the season and averaged just over 17 possessions per game.
So far this season George has played 16 games in the seniors and it has been a break out year thus far for him. He has spent most of this season in the midfield and while he hasn't hit the score board as often this season ( only 6 goals )what he has done is increase his possession per game to 26 , which is up 9 from the 2011. More importantly he has become a much more complete player. In his first two years he was predominantly an outside player, all be it a very skilful and clever one. So far this year he has gathered his own football and now possesses that dangerous combination of being both an inside and outside player. His attributes are that he runs all day with good speed and he is super skilful, he is a very elusive and free wheeling player who makes good decisions by bothy foot and hand. He has become a serious playmaker who sets up a lot of goals.
At the end of the 2012 season I had seen enough of Hampson to acknowledge his skills and ability however there were two areas of his game that concerned me. Firstly that his level of concentration was flawed as he often played in fits and starts, being full on for five minutes, or at times he went missing for lengthy spells. Secondly I had concerns that his slight wiry build may not stand up to the rigors of AFL as Hampson did seem to get knocked around a bit. However these two aspects of his game have come on in spades this season. After having missed the first two league games this season Hampson has put together a sequence of 19 games where he has averaged 26 possessions. He has also been a much more consistent player and now stays involved in the game from start to finish. Because of his high production this year he has been given a lot more attention by the opposition players and coaching staff and to pay credit where it is due he has handled this with aplomb.
Why Hampson. ????? To be honest I wanted to put his name out there as a player who's game has grown to the point whereby his development merits consideration at the next level. I also think that if he gets passed over this draft then he may have missed the boat. I do still have some concerns that he may be to slight ( having said that I had the same concerns with Dean Kemp and we all know how that turned out ). Conversely I also believe that being in a full time more professional AFL program that Hampsons endurance will be taken to an superior level and will be a great asset when combined to his silky skills. In addition to this I believe that Hampson would revel of the wide expanses of Subiaco Oval. I took with my second and third round selections big bodied inside midfielders and I was wanting to add a classy outside skilful mid to add to the list. Hampson does that and also adds some flexibility in so much as he could also be a very handy HFF /free flowing wingman.
Player comparison: Rosa but with far superior kicking skills.
Also gave strong consideration to Ben Sokol who does not get a lot of love on this board. But in the end went Hampson because I think he deserves at go at AFL.
Ben Sokol is one that I keep waiting to get picked to have a feel for where others rate him.
LemmingMaster you are up pal
Snoop got impatient. It's in the OP.
Pick 64 - Carlton - Nick Holman
Write up soonish.
#65 Port Adelaide - Tom Langdon
#66 Collingwood - Ben Sokol
ShhThere are four midfielders who really shouldn't still be available - Knight, Hewett, Sicily and Bennett. Yet, I want a KPP for Fremantle.

I am, but I can't decide...
The remaining KPPs I like are all defenders, and I don't particularly want another now that Fremantle would have Tanner Smith and Daniel McStay. There is one very good Victorian full back still there, while I feel as though Jed Redden may come off the board soon. I like Max King, but Moller is an even better prospect. Which brings me back to those four midfielders...
