Sam Durdin not mentioned which is great. Definitely had a very different program over pre season

FWIW the message I got is Walsh was bit sore after a couple of tough match sessions that were full on. Got hit hard a couple of times. Woke up sore around back area. No major issues just sore. Can still run etc but club is now extremely cautious with any players with history.

Hasn’t had one issue all pre season with back. Thought a week may do it but improving a bit slower so made call.

Given his previous back issues he will not play until he feels 100% so decision (after not missing a session all pre season) is to take it easy and freshen up before season. Can still do fitness etc just no contact. Very simple and no big deal
So will round 0 still be on for him. What about Martin and marchbank?? Any news??

So much angst about injuries at the moment, I think we all need to take a breath.

Marchbank - It's an illness and they'll manage his return - a non-concern. (which is rare anytime Marchbank is on an injury report...)

Durdin - Returning from injury and taking the conservative route not playing a pre-season game. A non-concern.

Matt Owies - See above. Non-concern.

Jack Martin - Slightly disappointing, but not a bad injury. Only likely to miss pre-season games. Should be right for rd 0, but if not he'll be right for rd 2. A very mild concern.

Sam Walsh - Somewhat concerning given his history, but given what we've heard in here (aside from 1 apparent itk) and from the wider media is that it isn't serious and if anything is just a conservative approach heading into the season. Walsh missing pre-season games isn't as hurtful in terms of match fitness as others given his fitness base. The only mild concern is that it's his back and he has history, if he had no history this would be a non-concern but due to history it's a mild concern with a watch attached.

We're basically talking about guys missing scratch matches here, not regular season. It's not that big a deal, we're doing ok injury wise. There's not much here to get worked up about.

All of those non-concerns are concerning.

Taking a conservative approach to returning from a soft tissue injury by not playing pre-season games is concerning?

Not being injured, being ill and having a conservative return program is concerning? I'd agree perhaps if it was flagged as a long term and complex illness, but it doesn't seem that's the case. Based on what we've heard there's no reason to think it will hinder his season at all.

I probably could have added a ;) for clarity.

Way I see it, first round (or round zero) is usually a free (didn't Brisbane get smacked last year 1st game) hit of sorts as clubs find their feet. Don't fly Walsh, Martin, Marchy etc up to QLD let them rest and get ready for the Tigers game. Give some opportunity to some of the young kids and depth who usually come into these early games flying somewhat and taper off as the season wears on. Our midfield, forward line and ruck is looking reasonable for round 0 on present list status, our backline is the one with some concern as the lack of the Bots leadership and poise will be hardest to cover.

Lets just hope that JD and Faux Nadal don't have their kicking and marking boots on, and Cameron doesn't have a flyer.

I agree let’s just get them right for Richmond and not worry about the Brisbane game.

Waaaay to much measured rationality in this post and not enough negative, pessimistic, worst case scenario drama for some supporters…

Grow up Soap!

I think plenty of supporters still bear a heavy degree of cynicism held over from the "1-2 week" era of a couple of years ago - where the club was (IMO) deliberately deceitful about injuries it knew were worse than publicly stated, particularly in pre-season (when we sucked and they wanted to lock in membership sales before we lost our first four straight games as was the tradition at the time).

I was very critical at the time and this equivalent thread was much worse than this, but we were also seeing guys listed as 1-2 weeks and missing 9-10. The final flashpoint IMO was the round 23 match in 2022 when everyone knew that Sam Walsh wasn't playing (including Collingwood), but it was denied by the club right up until he was a 'late withdrawal'.

Last season, I thought the club genuinely improved and made real efforts to be more open with supporters. There were a couple of times where they actually said they didn't really know what was happening, and that was refreshing. I actually think the club has been pretty good this off-season, too. Weitering's injury - it feels like they've been open, and kept us updated (I think we all know he isn't playing round 0 and 1, right?). Same with some of the others like Martin.

I do understand those who hold onto a bit of cynicism though, it has been a rough trot. But I reckon we should be able to both criticise the club when warratned, and acknowledge when it improves for the better too.

So my question is why are going so hard in the pre season and run the risk of injuring players.

Because you can't simulate our game style by not going hard? It's a contested game style whereby our pressure causes turnovers. How do you train for that?

That's good to hear. Would it have been better do you think for the club to say that themselves?

The media make a bigger deal things when they can say they have a "scoop".

I have no issue with the clubs statement. It was clear and hasn’t hidden anything

Too many people read to much into something so clear and simple

It does beg the question ...'can we last a full season with all our best players available with this brutal style'?

We were sore late last season after only playing half a season of brutal footy. What happens when we play brutal footy for the entire season plus pre-season training.

With any luck, that style will give us a grace period before finals, that will allow us to manage players. That game style is a winner come finals.

The club obviously released the injury update today as a result of the Walsh non-injury news leaking.
First one seen in a while. For me transparency is important from the club - as much as possible.

We've been through enough as a supporter group to know where it leads.

I get your point but just because we’re passionate supporters, or even paid up members, doesn’t entitle us to know EVERY single thing happening within the club. Some things require and should remain ‘in house’ only.

Minor injuries for example, I don’t have an issue with a club being protective of information. Opposition clubs that are scouting us, like we do them, don’t need to know every little niggle certain players may have.

Enough of these damn agitators !!

I’ve heard Will Schofield say on his podcast that every single player playing at the back end of the season has at least one niggle or injury. Imagine the artillery some fans would have if the club told us what all those injuries were…
