These next 2 games will solve a lot of selection conundrums. Cotrell vs Cunningham vs Fog, Hewett vs Kennedy, Kemp vs Marchbank (that one is clearer). Will get to see how all these guys perform in the 1s. Wouldn't have expected them to all be able to play if not for injuries.

But none of us know what the trigger was for Walsh suffering soreness

I think we can acknowledge it's not from too much Xbox. He is one of the prime examples of guys we need to hold back a bit.

In my opinion we haven't got many fat blokes running around out there (Brackets himself is looking super fit now) and with the bulk of the playing list now in that 25+ age group they've got a strong fitness base we can ease our way into the season a lot more now than back in 2016 when a whole lot of kids came in.

Unless you know Walsh’s exact training loads/program over the entire pre season you should not assume he is sore from not being “held back”.

Information from the club, whether you believe it or not, was that he copped some heavy knock that jarred and made him sore.

You don’t know, you are speculating and painting a picture of mismanagement. Don’t make negative assumptions of high performance professionals unless you have intimate knowledge of the facts.

There is a increasing amount of smug and dismissive posting happening on the boards. People are being ridiculed for reasonable opinions and this serves to quell debate and a sense of community, which is what we are here for.

Teddy, what you call reasonable opinion seems to be regarding one subject matter, which you have posted across multiple threads, which comes across as an agenda

You then make a definite statement that our preseason is worse than last year, despite clear facts contradicting that statement

I don't find that reasonable at all

I’m a bit surprised we would risk Williams for this game coming off an Achilles and knee reconstruction playing in Queensland in March with a hard cricket pitch in the middle of the ground against arguably the best team in the competition seems an unnecessary risk to be taking this early in the season.

He’s had a year out of the game and he has played in match simulated conditions. I doubt delaying it another week or two will improve the prospect of a non-recurrence. Reckon if he’s right to play then unleash.

Disappointing injury updates. The silver lining being that only one (potentially two with Marchy) is long term.

This is exactly why we have a squad of players though. Time for some fringe players to put their cases forward.

Repeating myself a bit, but we supporters will need to be patient with Walshy and the medics. His type of injury is very difficult to get right and the club will know that. Anyone who has been down that particular road to recovery knows it is long and there are a lot of setbacks. It's why the rest of us avoid that surgery if we can as there is a fairly low probability of success, and can often take more than one op.

The kid is a bull so has every chance to fire if he and the club are smart about it.

I'm no medical expert, but surely if Russell and the medical team have given him the green light then he's good to go (no matter the opposition or venue). It's been 12 months...

This article sums up the hit-and-miss aspects of Walsh's situation pretty well. It was a fairly new type of procedure (at least in Aust.) that he underwent and studies have shown a high rate of reinjuring in athletes that come back too soon, the high risk of prolapsing or herniating a disc in future, etc. Not a thing to be crazy brave with, but am confident he'll come good.

I don't think anyone is wanting to push Walsh to fast at risk of reinjury. Everyone wants him right for the long term. People are just generally frustrated at the timing of the reoccurence. Smashed preseason only to hurt himself on the eve of round 0.

Channeling my inner Tom Browne I happened to be walking around Princes Park today and saw Walsh et. Al in the recovery group inside working the footy from end to end with a bit of physicality.

Based on my professional medical experience* he looked to be moving fine - it does look to be more precautionary than his back is truly ruined. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s back for round 2 or whatever we’re calling it against the tigers.

*I’ve previously herniated a disc, reinjured it and couldn’t move for months either time. Therefore I consider myself an undisputed industry leading expert.

It is precautionary. He will be back round 3

I wasn't ridiculing you if that was a targeted response to me. I was questioning how you had come to some conclusions.

I think your posts have not been a reasoned opinion, but rather statements of mismanagement which were unfounded.

Keep posting and expressing your thoughts, people will agree and disagree as they see fit!!

Peace.

I have heard from a very "reliable" poster that doesn't take any opiates that Sam will have to do a 6 month pre season before being passed fit to play and is unlikely to play before the grand final.
heard the exact same thing from a bloke talking in his sleep on the number 19 tram..........

Good insight. We then need to cross reference that with a bit more detail.

Lets just do us vs Pies as we are both in a flag window so relevant and both listed at 7 injuries apiece.

Pendles is on their injured list but is more 'an assessment' than an injury. So more like 6 for them or we can 'arguably' add an underdone Owies/Durdin/Pitto who could fill in if we are desparate.

Their list of 7 includes Krueger, Eyre, Demattia. 3 players that are VFL only.

So they basically have Mcstay, Murphy and Howe that is relevant for comparison. We have Walsh, Weitering, Marchbank, JSoS, Martin and Motlop. 2 of that list are number one picks and arguably our 2 best players when fit/firing. Weitering critical for our def structure and irreplacable. And Walsh who is the only mid with speed leaving us very slow on transition.

So same number of injuries politically but very different in actuality.
