Blue Ribbon Cup: Saints v Hawks
29 June 2006
St Kilda Football Club

The Saints take on the Hawks at Telstra Dome on Saturday, in support of the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation.

Each team wil be vying for the Blue Ribbon Cup, which has been dedicated to the memory of Sergeant Gary Silk and Senior Constable Rodney Miller, who were both tragically killed in the line of duty in 1998.

This match is held every year between the Saints and the Hawks, and the Saints have won the last three encounters. Both team players and on-field officials will wear blue and white chequered armbands as a mark of respect for all police officers that have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon thanked all those involved in the annual challenge.

“The ongoing support and tremendous community spirit that allows the Blue Ribbon Foundation to continue giving back to Victorians is invaluable. I’d like to thank everyone for their support of this match” she said.

Chairman of the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation John Forbes commended both clubs for supporting the cause.

“A tribute like this from two of the leading AFL clubs is truly inspirational and emphasises the importance and magnitude of community spirit in Victoria,” said Mr Forbes.

To date, the Blue Ribbon Foundation has raised over $4 million and funded 12 medical units in Victorian Hospitals that treat more than 75,000 patients every year.

As part of the match on Saturday, the Blue Ribbon Foundation has designed commemorative medals that will be presented to all players. A gold version of the medal will be awarded to the player from each club voted Best on Ground by a media panel.

The Blue Ribbon Cup and Best on Ground medals will be presented by 8 year old James Miller, the son of Senior Constable Rodney Miller, who was only 7 weeks old when his father died. James is a keen Hawthorn supporter and looks forward to presenting the medals in honour of his father and Sergeant Silk. Other members of the Silk and Miller families will present players with the silver commemorative medals.

My dad is a police officer, so I absolutely support this one.
Plus, I like the sainters so it's always a friendly atmosphere in the crowd... as opposed to Geelong and Richmond fans who I goad and bait... ;)

This and the ANZAC Cup are the only two cups between two clubs that has a real meaning whereas other teams have cups for every game.

A great incentive by both the Hawthorn and St.Kilda Football Clubs

With St Kilda perched on six wins, six losses and inside the eight by percentage only, coach Grant Thomas is wary of his club's predicament.

During the mid-season break the Saints' went away to Bonnie Doon and while there, everyone made and signed off on a team commitment to give the second half of the season a real serious shake.

"We were able to get a lot of things out of the way and talk a fair bit about where we're at and more importantly where we want to be," Thomas said before training on Friday.

"We had a bit of spirit and camaraderie building and we also trained pretty hard three times a day.

"The players have agreed on a few things there, so we got a fair bit out of it.

"It was great. It was a very serene place to be and the environment was exactly what we wanted.

Believing that teams can never have enough team bonding, Thomas is adamant it will benefit his side with these next few weeks determining whether the Saints will be the threat they say they want to be.

"Well you can never have enough of it. When you're in a team game you've got to keep your spirit as high as you possibly can.

"The best spirit comes from winning and we haven't been doing that consistently well. We've been a little bit up and down, winning six and losing six.

"We're also aware that last year we set ourselves some targets for the last eight or nine games and had a good result."

"We're very confident that we can string a few wins together and that's what we need to do," he said.

With the Saints' now wanting to move on from the talk and put their words into actions, Thomas believes they will do exactly that, starting with Hawthorn on Saturday.

"We've probably done enough talking and it's now about delivering," he said.

"They won five very early games and showed that they could beat anyone. They're a good young side and Clarko's obviously got them all heading in the one direction.

"I suppose there's some similarities with where we were a couple of years ago. We'd like to think we've moved forward from then and in having said that, if we don't bring our A grade effort along, then any side can beat anyone.

"But we're confident that if we do bring that level of effort along then we're confident of getting the points," Thomas said.

Yes.
When we were there, some days we were unbeatable, other days we just didn't click.
The coach was doubted and ridiculed.
More mature teams targeted us physically

The good thing is having the players mature together and come to know each other's strengths and weaknesses. Also developing a tight knit group who play selfless football.

Hawthorn are definitely on track.
In fact, the truth be known, Hawthorn have chosen to adopt a more serious youth policy than St Kilda ever did.
If they can keep the core together, they will be a genuine premiership contender in two to three years, and will be competitive for a long time.

Saints applied pressure all day (look at the tackle count - exceptional for a team who led comfortably all day). This was the key to our success. Our pressure prevented Hawthorn from playing their "possession style" game. The pressure caused turnovers which we able to capitalise on quickly. The forward line was dominant but there is still a large margin of improvement left in them - as we were inaccurate.
We faded in the final quarter and allowed Hawthorn in for four cheap goals making their ordinary effort less embarassing.

A good positive return after the season break.
