Bottom end of the rumour scale. Bloke at work is a Norf supporter. He reckons, they are leading the race for O'Meara who has been seeing their doctors for over a year, as has Swallow, who is a sneaky chance to ask for a trade also. Has heard the old 4 were moved aside to make way for these 2.

...also reckons he'd heard from the media somewhere, Prestia to Blues.

Make of it what you will.

Swallow reunion has been bandied about for some time, David out of contract next year.

Ed brought the JOM / North medical Dept. rumour earlier..doing the rounds, so who knows. Same with the 4 retirements making way (but at least 2 or 3 had to go anyway).

Cant say I agree with much of that. We are all able to comment on whether a play is good or not. Experience helps, sure. But it by no means precludes people from being correct in their assessments of a player, let alone being able to hold an opinion.

I also can't see how the circumstance of Clem Smith's arrival at the club has much bearing on his success or otherwise. If you work hard enough and have the skill, you play. Particularly if you are on the list of a club at the bottom of the ladder. There's plenty to be said about specific circumstances and whether they help or hinder a player from reaching that level, but it ultimately comes down to skill and work ethic.
Put Smith into the Hawthorn environment... how long do you think that it would have been before we saw him play a game at senior level? Your choices are

1. Straight away.
2. After 12 months.
3. When he is ready.

Answer 3 would be the correct response. He came in and we automatically expected him to have an impact whereas if he had been selected by Hawthorn, they would have expected him when he was ready.

True, skill and work ethic plays a part in helping a player make it... but being in the right sort of environment that fosters development and enhance your chances of succeeding... instead of being in one that is expecting you to come on at an accelerated rate with minimal development.

mate, you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear - some bloke's aren't up to the top level - you're banging on about hypotheticals when the reality is he didn't make it within the time scale and support structure around him - the end

Hawthorn passed on Smith with 31 (D Howe), 49 (T Miles) and 50 (M Pittonet). Perhaps they simply didn't see in him what you do?

Just don't see how it is any riskier than what Geelong did with Menzel and JOM is potentially 3 times the player.

I just can't see what we could offer them. EADE and their crackpot CEO have both stated they want 2 x 1st rounders, or players in return of similar ability. I reckon * are in the box seat with no 1 picks in n draft & Psd.

The consensus in the 'football media' is that a first rounder and a player will do the trick.

then if * take him it's risky as hell..........

None of us know what we can offer but we will have currency. Trades aren't just straight swaps. There's so many steak knives and picks thrown around that you can find the currency anywhere if you plan well enough. Future picks and Academy bidding opens up more options.

There's no reason why we couldn't hold a top 10 pick, and bring in who we want.

(If it was Shane Rogers in charge I wouldn't have the same confidence)

Its probably 400k a year more risky than Menzel. 4 knee recos after he was drafted. Yes Geelong remained committed to a kid who had shown enormous promise, but really had no choice, and at nowhere near the cost of OMeara.

It smacks of Daisy ×2 to me. No doubt JOM was on a path to elite status. Its a huge risk which at our stage of development I dont think we can afford

A player not making it because they played senior football is one of the silliest thing I have ever heard. It does nothing but good to give young players a few games of senior football, never has it ruined anyone. Smith was given the best opportunity to make it.

Smith didn't make it because he was too small for his position. He came to us as a defender and probably would have made it in this position but at AFL level you can't play in defence at that size. We tried to turn him into a small forward but he wasn't up to it. Had we persisted with him for a few more seasons like we have with some we may have ended up with an AFL quality player with some limitations. That's not what we want or need so he's gone.

GCS want players not picks
Everitt, KJ, Kreuzer, Thomas, Boek, etc. are all first round draft picks so any 2 should meet their criteria.
Would want their pick #40 as well as JOM, as they will not use pick #40 and we need to draft someone to replace the two outs.
