I'd say the bye week before the finals start is the next 'milestone' to get over in the Cogs saga...if he doesn't announce resigning in that week I would think he was leaving...others have committed during that week before finals before, and timing would certainly give GWS a lift...if he had decided already to re-sign, holding off until next week makes sense to me...

What rumour monger has ever been the only one to get a call right in and of themselves? Generally 2 or 3, maybe more, people confirm it before it happens. The only one I can remember is EP calling Shiel to Essendon, outside of that everything of corroborated several times before it comes out.

Seems a weak argument for thinking he's not good.

If we've heard it elsewhere then it's not news.

Most "corroborated" info doesn't come to pass from most of the rest.

The smarter corrobrators have a better strike rate, which is where I see TCP.

Easy for us in this situation to offer a small contract term on high $$$$ to counter that rule (which I thought was the opposites)

3 years @ $4M

Would make it very very hard to match
Would be concerned if my employer told me I was worth $x and that was their best offer ..... only to offer $x+20% as soon as one of their rivals did.

Ftfy

A small, but crucial change.

All this food talk is making me hungry:

If he stays at GWS - lapin a l'orange.

If he comes to us - rabbit poached.

If he goes to Hawthorn - rabbit stew!

Can we got someone to print up some 'Up Yours Gil' bumper stikers like those Footscray fans did for Ross Oakley all those years ago ?
Asking for a friend
We get 1000 done in full colour, water and weather resistance for 18 cents each. Seeing as it’s full colour a pic of his head with a boat kicking it might work. I’ll talk to our marketing and design team at work

It would be dumb for cogs to announce anything before GWS season was over and him being still a chance to return. Also out of respect for his teammates to not create extra media attention.

Him leaning towards staying might also be due to GWS pressing for an answer. While he is still a chance to return if he said he was leaving they might not let him play.

It’s all up in the air at the moment. Once GWS finishes things will become clear

Told me personally we were still a chance for Kelly, shared it on here, 24 hours later he resigned and made me.look like a shmuck. That being said I grew up with him and he is an incredibly humble guy and doesn't deserve the 'knob' tag. Very little ego, just wants to follow in his old mans footsteps and loves CFC.
He's Mark's son?

Don’t think so, Gaff waited until Free Agency was only a few days away after the GF

So what of the other prospects?
I saw an article last night saying that we are also very keen on Ellis.
Also has been some conjecture about where we might send Adelaide's pick - B. Crouch, Papley or Wines?
I'd be pretty happy to have Crouch in the side with Cripps, Coniglio, Murphy, Ed and Walsh.
A fully fit team of our KP forwards would make us very hard to beat with that midfield.

Comes across as a genuine fanboy. Watching Oval Office and hearing him on the radio, I get the feeling he still feels in awe at times when chatting with players and genuinely loves being part of it, engages in the banter and wants to be very “matey”. Whereas the bulk of your other journos are just keen on getting the answers they want and developing a story
I think yours is a good observation.
I don’t mind that aspect of his radio persona.

Josh Kelly signed up the day he was awarded AA. I suspect the timing will be similar for cogs if he stays

This is true, and Dusty signed up on the eve of/during the finals also.

Flip side, Gaff had us all on the North board on tenterhooks until the start of the trade period. As a dab hand at these scenarios now all I can say is strap in and expect this thread to double in size here on in :thumbsu:

Wouldn't be surprised if he is/was a regular on boards like this one. Think he gets a lot more enjoyment out of spinning hypotheticals than spinning headlines. You can tell when someone calls up and gives him an interesting trade hypothetical, he gets genuinely excited about it.

Yeh take your point...I think that Gaff was a slightly unusual situation though given the suspension he was serving at the time and, from all reports, he was battling mentally at the time around that...

All I was thinking was it would be an 'opportune' time to announce it for him, with some meaning, if it was leading into what looks like an otherwise difficult finals campaign for GWS.

I know some may disagree, but I'd prefer he stayed at GWS rather than go to the Hawks...

Find it funny also with the article on Clarkson being angry at poaching staff given the tactics he has displayed previously. There was a story about him being turned down by a player a few years ago only to turn up unannounced at his door step whilst he was on holidays...much worse than Russell leaving a voice mail I reckon...think the player was Tom Boyd from memory, but might be wrong...

Clubs can always afford to match, the consequences of them matching are for them to deal with if a player stays.

Considering how close the FA period and trade period are together, there just isn’t enough time for the AFL to do a proper investigation in to finances.

GWS could always say, we will offload, player a,b,c,d and e and the AFL would have to accept as up until now they haven’t gone over any cap.

I just don’t like this matching business, it opens the AFL up to dodgy behaviour, I also don’t think they will match

The AFL is a basket case, but I think you're underselling their professionalism.

They would be well aware of the salary cap situations of all clubs and there is no way they would allow any club to match a bid if they couldn't afford to do so.

Cogs wants to play under clarko

No doubt Cogs is a brilliant and composed decision maker on the field, who always seems to think a few steps ahead of the rest. Hopefully he shows those very same attributes in determining where he wants to play his footy from 2020 onwards, and if he does, then I remain optimistic that we’re an excellent chance to land him.

If he chooses to stay at GWS or move over to the Hawks, then so be it, and as a club we’ll just have to keep working collectively to get where we’re determined to go without him. If we succeed, and Cogs has decided to ply his trade elsewhere, then he might just quietly regret that decision for years to come. While I’m ever so slightly biased, as our rebuild gathers some serious momentum, imo Cogs has as much (if not more) to lose by him not coming to Carlton as we do, as something special is brewing at Ikon Park for the years ahead.

While recognising that this is a Bluemour thread, so evidence and even logic are somewhat optional, in terms of “will he, won’t he?” I think we’d all do best to simply relax until GWS are out of the finals, and Cogs finally reveals what his intentions are ... unless, of course, he opts to recommit to the (shrinking-by-the-day) Giants in the meantime, in which case we were never really in with a chance anyway.

As things currently stand, I realise that in theory a number of cases can be put forward regarding where Cogs will end up, but tbh I reckon that Sherlock Holmes was on to something when he said to Watson:

In this case, there is precious little data available to us concerning Cogs’ situation and thinking, and imo plausible theories can be constructed to say that he’ll stay put at GWS, go to the Hawks, or come to us. Imo, we’ve just got to wait and see what happens in the fullness of time, while realising that Cogs is by no means make or break when it comes to our future - yes, he’d be a great and welcome acquisition no doubt, but thankfully our list is rapidly developing to the point where our fortunes will not rest on any single player.
