They won’t match.
Our offer is able to be so big because of our banked cap. That’s why it’s so front loaded, it’s essentially a signing bonus which is over the cap. Clubs can’t afford to pay that to their own players.

And we sure as hell won’t trade better than their pick for the privilege of paying such a massive amount of money, which is only offered because he is free.

I agree they won't match but the opportunity is there for them to do so.

And the clarification (read: makey-uppey rule change to assist the expansion clubs) from the AFL over the past few days that the Giants just have to match the total $ value of the contract and the number of years, rather than loading it exactly as other suitors might, makes it more likely IMO.

What if we call their bluff and don't offer a trade and their salary cap is destroyed forcing them to offload other players cheaply.

If the Giants match Cogs will have the choice - leave or stay.

If he stays, so be it. I have always said I believe this is the most likely scenario.

If he decides to leave and wants to come to Carlton, we'll get it done.

1.3m x 7 isn't as sweet if we also have to cough up two first rounders.

I agree, but I reckon we'll forget it pretty quickly when we see him out there come round 1 vs the Tigers.

Obrien on one wing and dow on the other in the side that wins it for us in 2 years. We aint Richmond yet so let these blokes develop. Take your point on depth tho.

LOB yes, but I don't see anything in Dow that suggests he's at home out on a wing.

He's a centre square player who will hopefully be able to drift forward and have an impact. Very much like Dangerfield.

Would a club risk it?

If they want to keep the player and have the salary to accommodate, why not?

My confidence levels have dropped to about a 20% chance of him coming to us. Hope we've got multiple irons in the fire in case it doesn't happen.

I’d love us to build up momentum with what we have and some solid picks/trades rather than think 1 bloke coming in will make all the difference, especially having to pay that bloke what is described as one of the largest contracts in the afl history.

The pressure on him, the pressure on the decision makers, the pressure it puts on the list. That f’ed thinking.

Let’s win multiple flags without thinking we need to bringing the messiah to do it.

We have elite talent on our list that’s about to ******* explode.

I’d love Coniglio, but perhaps we are not ready for him.

Let’s get up the ladder with what we’ve got plus some solid picks/trades and get in a position where the top talent want us more than we want/need them.

I want players that play for the jumper not the cash.

If we do land him I’ll still be doing the pants down helicopter.
Just think Neale going to Brisbane, is what you'll get with Cogs coming to us. They won 5 games last season, and where are they now? I think he will add tremendous improvement to our team like Neale has to Brisbane.

a follow-up post from deano35 might address that.

IMO i think he'll stay due to the fact it's no coincidence that a week after the corrupt CEO announced he'd love the rabbit to be eaten in Sydney then all of a sudden they suddenly have found some more money for him.
That's what worries me.

No big deal coz there is plenty of other fish and MEAT in the market that is looking at us very closely....."

Don't believe that anything has changed, Carlton have made a large offer, Coniglio & and his manager are very interested along with Hawks, l believe he is still leaning towards leaving, but naturally there is a chance he may stay eg Kelly some years ago.

i think most people including the media get ahead of themselves, and everyone wants to be the newsbreaker when it clear there will be no decision until season end, GWS seem to be a club not going in a positive direction so maybe a new coach may be the decider but that would be unlikely to be until October if they decide to this path.
We don’t know anything all speculation people need to be patient

Easy for us in this situation to offer a small contract term on high $$$$ to counter that rule (which I thought was the opposites)

3 years @ $4M

Would make it very very hard to match

Papley and Jack Martin would be very handy consolation prizes if Cogs stays..

Really wish the AFL wouldn't keep changing the goalposts on Free Agency Rules and matching every time something happens to suit their agenda and self-interest

I don't think they'd be allowed to match if they couldn't afford to do so.

Clubs can always afford to match, the consequences of them matching are for them to deal with if a player stays.

Considering how close the FA period and trade period are together, there just isn’t enough time for the AFL to do a proper investigation in to finances.

GWS could always say, we will offload, player a,b,c,d and e and the AFL would have to accept as up until now they haven’t gone over any cap.

I just don’t like this matching business, it opens the AFL up to dodgy behaviour, I also don’t think they will match

Papley + Martin is a bigger net gain for Carlton than just Cogs. You guys have enough young promising mids, but you don't have as many of Papley and Martin's types

Can we got someone to print up some 'Up Yours Gil' bumper stikers like those Footscray fans did for Ross Oakley all those years ago ?
Asking for a friend

Get ****ed Gil, has some symmetry that could be a money spinner for sure

Would give us a scary foward line

Lack of definitive information and any information from ITK posters suggests it's mid/late August and the home and away season hasn't finished yet let alone finals and the commencement of the trade/free agency period is miles away which suggests there is not much to know yet.

I would think that the most that has happened at this stage would be that there has been some manager contact and that we may have had some initial contact with players.

I would think we are at the expression of interest stage with player recruitment. Talk to players and managers, give an offer and see what players are interested. We'll be seeing if the players will want to explore coming to us further.

Players would need to do a club tours, meet everyone and go throughout the medicals before any decisions are made, especially when dealing with players who are not disgruntled with their current clubs. Doubt that has happened yet. Players have probably met with SOS maybe one or two others but doubt much more.

Guys like Coniglio and even Martin are likely happy at their current club, they will be moving for better opportunity (more money/success) and will want to be sure that is what they are getting before making decisions. They will need to investigate us further which wouldn't have happened yet before committing to things.

I really doubt someone like Coniglio has made a decision until he goes through the process of touring the clubs and meeting the people there and assessing all the deals which I doubt gets done until after the season.

I think at this stage, if we have an expression of interest from a player, which in August is about the most you can expect from a player who is not disgruntled at their current club is the most you can hope for.

I don't think any player would have committed to joining us. I think there would be plenty of players out there who have committed to explore the option of joining us and they will tour and meet later on at a more appropriate time.

On Coniglio, I think he has met with us and we have put forward an offer and he has expressed interest and will explore that further later. I think all the rumors and chinese whispers have probably translated players taking an interest in us and being willing to explore coming to us and other clubs as that player wanting to come to us, wanting to go elsewhere, wanting to stay.

I believe with Coniglio we are a chance and he will explore coming to us but that's as far as it's probably gone. He's probably willing to explore other clubs like Hawthorn which is a player being diligent.

I would think that when the time comes and if our deal is the most impressive and the other clubs don't exceed us in the tour and meet department then we will be a very good chance but until then I would thing our potential recruits are booked in for a meet and tour with us and other clubs and until then nothing will happen.

Think we are going to have to be patient and wait for things to happen. Give things time to happen.

Doubt our ITK posters and even the club are sure on anything because I doubt the potential recruits are sure yet. Confident maybe but sure, not yet.

It's late enough in the season that all we can think about is trades.

But still too early in the season for trades to be settled/announced.

So we fill the void with BS.... ;)
