You’d suggest our ability to be in a great space for FA space next year (2026) is because out current band of FA being paid significantly overs for output, but more importantly, games played. A couple of exceptions of course.
A massive lesson on just how easily these type of deals can make or break things.
Do you take the less risky moneyball approach, or the alternate all in approach? In other words, established over draft.
Would suggest that with our current list it’s time to put them on the line and be “all in”
Think our window with this list shuts end of 2028

Speaking with someone apparently in the "Know" on the weekend at Saints game they said we could easily bring in an $800k player or a bit higher if we wanted. May have to move one or two things but can make it work

This aligns with other comments around Cook using last year and this year to put us in a better position SC wise to have more flexibility and options

I "assume" the end of deals for Williams McGovern plus moving on from Marchbank Cuningham Martin etc will give us more flexibility in coming years. We have a number of young players now on bugger all and will bring in some more this year

Not sure although next 2-3 years could be very good and we need to take advantage of McKay Curnow Cripps Weitering in their prime. If we went for a Petracca or Houston I may agree but I see our list differently and I think the club does as well. We seem to have a 10 year type focus. That is why we are going to draft again

It will all depend how Moir, Wilson, Lord, O'Keefe types step up. Cerra Walsh Ollie Elijah Cowan Kemp Motlop are still young

Message second hand through our group from person that is heavily involved in player movement. Never discusses player names

Austin and team are extremely active and have spoken with everyone possible
Not looking at any "big" name players at this stage
Believe List is in a good spot. Needs are tall defenders and run off HB
Massive focus on fitness and medical by Cook. Expect big changes in dept after season over
Want to use first round pick in draft. Looking for deals to get more first round picks as believe there is good players up to 20-25. Mids and Talls. Won't be easy as many clubs want the same. Pushed for same last year but couldn't get a deal
Have money is salary cap if "big" name falls our way but happy to work with list we have with smart additions. Next year will be in great spot for any FA deals

That is exactly what I would have hoped for, hopefully Cook comes up trumps big time on the fitness and medical areas as there would be no bigger recruits anywhere in any comp worldwide that would help us more than in that area

I am shocked to be sitting here that after all the hooting and hollering over Andrew Russell’s impending retirement that we currently have supporters that are all for trading Harry McKay for a player who’s body might be so ****ed that it’s more ****ed than Caleb Marchbank’s.

Crazy.
It is the whole club culture including a portion of the supporter base addicted to sugar hit of the name over fitness: Judd, Daisy, "Williams the Mid," Mcgovern, Martin

I'm not as anti-Petracca as most seem to be. He's been a top 5 player for the past 4-5 yrs, we're not in a position to turn our noses up at that. He's exactly the kind of mid we've been desperate for - inside-outside power and speed that kicks goals. He would be a dream get. I could only imagine him resting as the 3rd target inside 50, that's a ridiculous forwardline.

The only issue is the cost and whether we're in a position right now to pay it - and I'm not sure we are. Cerra and a 1st is maybe what I'd be ok with, not much more than that. As others have said he'll be 29 next yr, so his value isn't at its peak. I'm curious to see how hardball Melb want to be here.

Cultural issues are as obvious as can be, despite a half-cooked Goodwin speaking in every press conference about how it's actually good and he has great conversations with the players all the time, so forcing someone to stay who desperately wants out is probably in their best interest, irrespective of contract or level of player. It would likely come down to the last 30 mins of trade week but I don't think Petracca will cost as much as Melb want.

Cook always fills me with confidence. Numerous times he has come and spoken with supporters, is calm and answers questions. He always says the club's focus is about improving in alll areas and a long term focus. He doesn't shy away from issues

He is always reviewing and looking to get better

I have no doubt he (and others) aren't happy with form, injuries etc and will be doing everything to improve this for next year

I expect big changes in Fitness and some changes around coaching next year.

Happy for our lads to hang out on euro beach style loungers, wear shades and drink pina coladas all pre season if it means improving our injury list.

The stamp of Brian Cook. There's a reason why he's the king of continuous improvement in the AFL.

When you add Campo twins and Walker. We can build sustained success around the youth we will have. Need to nail this and next years draft.

Is it just me or are players peaking a bit later in this day and age? Maybe not the individual players themselves, but the team aspect of their game.

Collingwood won the flag with a pretty old list last year.
Geelong won it the year before with the oldest list ever.
Cripps is at his best at 29.
KPF's seem to be perform well into their 30's, I suspect McKay/Curnow will be no different.

On an individual accolade/performance basis, there's no doubt the 'best' years are those traditional 23-28yo bracket, but unsure - I reckon the more team-orientated AFL is becoming, they get better at playing as a team as their career goes on - maybe less selfish, more experience, less ego etc.

Just a thought I had recently. Don't mind me.

Excellent news, but I hope we keep that money safe for the TDK extension.

Interesting read. It sounds like Trac is going and we'd be dumb not have a red hot crack. TDk and Hazza should not be on the table. Shouldn't mean it's impossible to make happen. Surely the inherent risks should bring the price down.
If not- fine. I'm just saying we should do all we can.

Agree with this. Hence why I don't want to make any drastic changes that might shorten our window of contention. AKA. going all in on Petracca and trading out a key pillar + picks. If we can stay in the mix for a few years in a row we'll increase our chances of the stars aligning for us the way it did for the Cats and the Pies.

Our players are talented enough, just gotta focus on building fitness and cohesion.

Would be keen to add another couple of (edit) talls to this list. Then with what we have and who we have coming the nucleus will be there.
