how much was the Hibberd trade back a few years? He was an AA gun half back not sure if contracted. Think he was kinda expensive. Edit: nvm AA was after trade and supplements. Not before

Saad another - somewhat expensive.
Saad was worth it, at least initially. Was just everywhere and seemed to never lose a contest.

I'd much rather chase the D'Ambrosio types that just need a chance and are cheap

Austin, for all the criticism on here, I believe has been fairly good especially with later picks. O'Keefe, Lord, Lemmey, Boyd, Cincotta look good picks

The trades for Acres, Elijah have worked well. A Brayden Campbell, Josh Sinn etc would be the types that would be value and really help us

I hope we target, select these types, along with Pick 11 and maybe another first round pick
I’d say Saad needs help back there. A lot falls onto him and if he’s not there, we look lame down back.

To me, Houston is a great get if he does come but I to think we need to stop chasing big name players.

If we really want Houston I think we need to let one of our big name players go to get another 1st this year and another 1st next year. As to who I think needs to go, well I have no answer to that expect I cannot be TDK or Weitering.

If we lost a star player but were able to bring in Houston, Aleer, Stone and draft Lalor and Hotton/Berry along with the Campo boys, maybe we would be better off, especially in 2 years time with games into the draftees.

Agree. Our run off HB is an issue. So is small forward. IMO can't put all eggs in one basket

Other issue is Saad is 31 next year and looked average after hammy injury

We have to our faith in our current youth and add to it with more than one key player

PS I miss the 80s when we could just go buy whatever player we wanted

Can we find or develop a Lawson Humphries?

Going by that line of thinking would we be better down grading our pick 11 into 2 x ~20s to continue targetting good role players?

The Cats picked up Mannagh and Humphries in the off season. Two astute selections. Mannagh was close to best on ground in his first final.
We need to do the same. These type of players are out there.

I think he's still got that in him tbh.

On Houston. I'm genuinely happy with that if it gets done. Boyd hasn't come on - whether coaching or ceiling and if Dochs healthy he's playing wing. So we end up with Ollie out and Houston in and far less reason to ever force Kennedy/cerra/Hewett/williams to crab around as a half back.

Also have the other half of me saying it won't matter if we keep going about it the way we have been...

That's my take as well

Go cheap for a Josh Sinn type and then the draft for Campo twins and some other young talent

We have to also put faith in Wilson, Lord, Boyd, Cowan, Binns, Ollie, Cincotta, Moir etc to step up and go to the next level. That's what good clubs do
I agree with the philosophy but who'd want to be an under 21 player at Carlton?

A) There's a core group of players who get picked in the AFL side regardless of form or fitness. Young guys are held in the VFL way too long.

B) Even when they do get a chance, they get dropped after a game or two, seemingly regardless of performance.

C) Despite much talk about putting more focus on the VFL team, they finished 3rd last. So it's not a prime learning environment.

I'm not saying copy Hawthorn, they haven't won anything yet but you can draft as many kids as you like & it won't matter if you don't back them & play them.

The problem is Voss doesn’t seem to want to play anyone but his supposed top 23 and only does when his hand is forced.

Mannagh and Humphries would have been left to rot in the twos

Until such time as Voss takes the names off the magnets every week and decides the team on form and fitness we are wasting our time looking at those types

Yeah I did wonder where Mannagh came from...man he was good...kept bobbing up in the right positions to receive the ball and kicked 3 goals

Id love us to find players like that.

Like cincotta - a solid role player that can be relied upon to get the job done.

No nonsense types... is prolly a good definition of these types.

Can play, but injured a lot. Played some good games late '23 and got a rising star nom.
Played 10 VFL games this year with good numbers, but tough to break into their midfield.
Would seem to be an odd get for us, unless we are going to triple down on winning contests at the expense of winning games of football.

Thanks mate, never realised that he was an inside bull. Nice site for player info, will be handy.

Yeah I agree....this is a big problem for us.

Leaving out Cincotta really proved his way of poor thinking.

we just need to hope that the MC actually give the kids a run.. We've seen what they can do through forced changes.. youth and enthusiasm can go a long way. I would have loved to see what Moir and Lord could have done in the Elimination.

Straight facts here - well said.

It's not even just Hawthorn that we need to follow. Literally every successful team in the AFL bring in their young players on a rotational basis to give them exposure at the level and build depth in their list. We are way off the mark in this regard sadly.

Nailed it :thumbsu:

Heck of a player but I hope we aren't chasing him

Tired of the big name, big cost deals. Restricts so many other options. We need more than one player and must look internally. Game plan, development, player roles, fitness etc need to be the focus

Effectively putting all our eggs in one basket worries me

I have faith in Wilson Boyd Cincotta Ollie Cowan Docherty to help fill the role plus I would hope we have more Acres/Elijah type deals in the works

IMO we are better off brining in quality young players through the draft

Those players you've mentioned will never (excluding Wilson) have the ability that Houston has (Doc's best is behind him, Cowan, Cin, Boyd all role players, Ollie will be a good ordinary player).

Elite run and super elite kick and wants Carlton, sounds like a no-brainer.

The main issue I have with your comment is 'quality young players through the draft'. How has that gone for us and plenty of other clubs?? As we all know, it's a lottery, which nearly always falls on the side of a miss.

Houston is worth one 1st rounder, which is all PA will want so they can get their deal done.

*I still prefer Smith and have thought he would be a great fit for a number of years.

I appreciate that sentiment but have we actually shown that we're great at developing young talent?

You'll get some that will have become great no matter where they landed (Cripps) but I don't think we're particularly good at developing young talent to play at the next level up.

If D'Ambrosio had come here 12 months ago, do you think he'd have had the season he just did? I've got several doubts about that.

Binns should have replaced Oli(or 1 of the struggling small forwards) for a few games earlier this season. Nothing to lose, only rewards effort, gains experience and puts a rocket up the more favoured ones.
