not sure how to feel if we only bring Hynes in this season

Hopefully we can improve our draft hand this year though

Would really like a KPD option from the bush/state leagues. There’s gotta be plenty out there? Same with a small fwd.

Aside from that, happy to boost our draft number as much as possible to replenish our youth and improve the VFL program. Development can come from improved coaching & strategy.

Really not interested in the big fish everyone here is desperate for. Tbh the Houston & Petracca chat is bloody boring now (and seriously unlikely to happen).

Not having compensation for free agents is not equalisation - its just a chance for strong teams to pillage less successful teams.

However there needs to be a much more transparent system for the compensation. Maybe a panel of five experts can sit and decide what pick would be given for the players loss based on ;

1) AND MOST IMPORTANTLY- what the player would be valued at in an actual trade at that time.

2) age, contract value, contract length.

Panel would consist of ex players, coaches, recruiters etc and panel members couldn't sit on a panel that involved any team that they had had a previous involvement with.

Josh Battle -probably worth about an early second round pick but add salary, contract length - gives StKilda an end of first rounder.

Panel publishes recommendation, transparency and common sense prevail.

What staggers me is that a player moving between two clubs then has a direct negative impact on the other 16 clubs. Why should other clubs be pushed down the draft order because of what other clubs are doing?

It wouldn’t happen but imagine there was 8 first round compo picks handed out and you move from pick 10 to pick 18? It is farcical. West Cost are trying to rebuild and their second picks keep getting further and further away
West Coast finished bottom last season and didn’t get their second round pick until 30, Pushed back 11 spots. The difference between 19 and 30 is bloody huge.
The entire system is a joke.

Calling it now …

Haynes will be our only inclusion, we will take pick 11 to the draft and Owies, Kennedy and Lewis will all stay

Doesn’t seem like anything is happening
Is this sense that nothing is happening based on the fact that the trade period hasn't actually started yet?

Just gives the club more impetus to develop players to their full potential so if they decide to leave then the club is compensated to the max.

St Kilda took Battle at Pick 40, he turned into a decent defender to the point another club offered him 900k - now they are cashing in.

Rebuilding shouldn't be based purely on draft position. All clubs are still set draft picks, it is then up to them to make it work.

A club like Hawthorn hasn't got great output draft their recent high draft picks (DGB, Ward, McKenzie have been bad-OK, Watson has been great, Day was a lateish first round draft pick), but they've brought in Newcomb as a mid-season selection, Ginnivan for a packet of chips, D'Ambrosio for a packet of chips, McDonald for a second rounder.

They've then paid very little or nothing for best 22 players: Scrimshaw, Moore, Chol, Amon, Impey etc have cost a total of a couple of draft picks.

The draft is a lottery, it's far more important have a well run footy department so you can use free agency and the trade market to best advantage.

Have you heard any names linked to us? Any credible destinations for those 3 players?

It’s extremely quiet
I'd very much hope that the rank and file wouldn't be hearing what we are looking to do prior to the trade period opening.

I've heard about 10 names linked to us by people of varying believability.

I agree it should be on value in an actual trade, leave age, contract value etc out of it.

Should the Hawks have received pick 19 for Buddy or a top 3 pick?

I hope you are right, I just have a feeling by the end of trade period we are gonna be extremely quiet and underwhelmed
