Maybe, but he didn't have the pedigree for the role when they got him and at the very least should have bought some insurance.

Hawthorn got Battle and Barrass... last year Port got Ratugolea and Zerk-Thatcher... it's not as though our need for a key back sprung up over night. We have had how long since we lost Liam Jones to replace him???

IMO, we were all in on Young before Bossy raised his dislike and caused us to be in this conundrum.
Having S Durdin still on the list (after his past 2 years) just re-enforces the dilemma.

Judging from Austin’s tone, seems there’s a clear directive to play the kids more. To my ears at least.

Yep - when discussing the Owies situation, his response "we want to get games into Moir" tells me that Austin's view is that we've brought in players to address existing needs, and now we need to use them.

Need a creative spark in the front half? Moir needs to play.
Need some dash through the middle? Wilson needs to play.
Need extra pressure at stoppages? Lord needs to play.
Need some more hard running on the outside? Binns needs to play.

Don't need to play all of them every week, but we need to get them into the side to play their roles when we can, instead of going back to the same old well with limited senior players who have a history of only showing up one week in four.

You mean.... it's going to happen Wright away?

:p

We need a mod to sort you out. No funny business, sir. It’s the wrong time of year for that.

Not to my eye it isnt. The problem is more 33/33/33. 33% on the midfielders, 33% on the defensive transition plan that is terrible, and 33% on the Key position defenders. I'm open to swinging those 'made-up' percentages 5% either way lol.

The stats they based the KPDer on is completely flawed when assessing Carlton's key defenders.

A case in the point is the Carlton GWS game. The mids applied pressure in that game forcing GWS to put in high balls to Hogan. Hogan man handled Kemp. But the key thing that tricks everyone, Kemp fell over twice due to body on body contact. When he falls it is not recorded as losing one on one so the stat becomes useless and cant be trusted. This happened in a lot of games similar to the midfielders not tracking back. IMO, the impact is on about the same weighting as the midfielders getting caught out on defensive transition.

I see the media and posters continually look at the one on one def losses of our side and its the crappiest stat out there. Hogan pushed Kemp over on the goal line, then ran forward 15 metres and took a chest mark. That is a defensive one on one loss but it isnt registered

It leads to the important point that Kemp is out of his weight division.

I dont mind Kemp either as a 3rd/4th def tall or third fwd. This isnt a shot on him. It's a shot at the club for the stupid KPDer mismatch.

If it helps, i really agree Cerra/walsh and the transition style of the mids was off in the second half of the season having a high impact.

I'm only asking for one thing different to you. A second key def who can punch at the right weight division.

Agree we need a better 2nd KPB (or one at all).

But Kemp only ended up on Hogan because Weiters went off injured (corky?) and then came back NQR for the rest of the match.

Why people don’t believe that they can have a massive positive effect next season is beyond me.

Which players from last years first round or the year before, had a massive positive effect in their first season?

Now if you find a few, look where they were drafted and are they comparable to us?

First year draftees can have a positive impact, its very very rare for one to have a massive impact, you are then assuming both have a massive impact, you actually have to get the picks right first.

I assume we will pick a KPD with one of the picks, if this is the case, I really doubt they have any impact at all.

I dont believe draftees will have much of an impact because its rare theory do and i think Voss leans heavily to players he trusts.

But we don’t setup well.

We have no decent delivery into the forward line, our players continue to bomb it on our talls’ heads in a contest, and our smalls are never around the fall of the ball.

It’s almost like our FWD coach has no idea of the craft 🤔
I remember seeing a stat at the end of the season showing we were the most efficient side in the league going inside 50 which was a real surprise to me

I think this is the most important time of the year to have a larf!

Otherwise you go stir crazy during trade week (month)...

It's hard to believe there's no viable lockdown KPD in the state leagues even if we don't pick up that Hawks player

Have watched a bit of footage of him - not sure he plays alongside Weitering, but I reckon he's well suited to stepping into Weitering's role to cover him for injury or management.

Not super quick, but reads the ball well in the air, makes good position in contests and takes his marks.

Maybe the two can co-exist and Weiters gets a bit more freedom, but my gut feel is that Phillips would be insurance for Weiters rather than a starting second KPD.

Our football department needs a shake up. There is a lack of intellectual fire power and mongrel. Watching Austin speak does my head in. "Let's see what happens, we'll go to the draft." mantra is crap. Make something happen..just do! Lloyd seems as useless as ice to the Eskimos. Our MC picks the team in Round 1 and misses the changes going on around them. Our assistant coaches can't devise any plan whatsoever to get the ball to our key forwards unless we win the clearance. I really dislike Hawthorn but Sam Mitchell has all the mongrel we don't and doesn't accept any crap. I'd like to see some of that..I

We can't score when we aren't winning clearance but we were the number 1 team for scores from turnover and number 1 team for defending scores from turnover up until round 19...

Maybe you need to dial down the pessimism

One thought occurred to me ... Why are Port and Melbourne desperate to get a pick/another pick in the first round of this draft? Maybe they rate it as Austin does?

I guess it is Austin's job on the line. I always maintain that list managers and coaches have to be able to live or die by their own decisions. It's their livelihood.

Jaidyn Stephenson (yuck) was huge in 2018 when Collingwood came from the clouds.
Brisbane had Ashcroft, Lohman, Fletcher, Morris running around this year.
2023 Collingwood had Ginnivan who bobbed up all year despite a poor GF.

I find teams generally take the leap when their battlers & depth in the squad are replaced with promising kids.

We just hope Vossy gives them every chance and are developed correctly.
I get your point, hut only two payers you mentioned were first year players, Stephenson and Morris

Not pessimistic, mega frustrated! Sure we looked great when we had space but we got figured out and the space evaporated. Plan B lob the ball on Charlies head and let him win it v 3 defenders.

Anyone who thinks we're a long way off needs to rewatch the game when we embarrassed Geelong.

That was us playing near our best.

He must really believe what he's doing. From a self-preservation perspective trading the pick for Houstin is definitely the safer move. Hard to see that backfiring in the short-medium term.

If Houston goes to the pies and they have a resurgence in form, whilst we struggle serious questions will be asked. If pick 12 is a bust or doesn't end up being a really good player (quite possible as we aren't talking a top 5 pick here (it'll be 14 after bids)) that's almost a career killer.

If we hold firm and don't trade that pick for Houston, we need to absolutely nail it. There is no other option.

I think the club realised early on that to get 13 we needed to overpay, then add to that, to get Houston we again need to overpay. Cancelling out this and next years draft points would be crazy. It’s why we would be only offering Port a fair trade (in our eyes).

We desperately need the draft not only for some more injection of youth but also to help smooth the salary cap.

If we only hit the draft this year, I fully expect us to grab a high priced FA next year

At the end of 2022 the same stuff was rolled out, we need to go to the draft to smooth out the cap and we will target players next year, 2023 comes around and we trade out two players, bring in Hollands and the cheap and go to the draft in the late 20’s, the same lines were rolled out, we need to hit the draft and we will target players next year and now its 2024 and we are rolling out the same lines.

We are desperate for a second key defender, last year one went as a free agent, this year Barass will go to the Hawks and Battle went to the Hawks, we weren’t linked to any, the only reason why a club desperate for another key defender wasn’t in the discussion is because we have no $$$$.

Maybe next year will be the year we have the $$$ to go after a player of need but people already are talking about the big $$$ needed to re-sign Weits and TDK.

With all theses gun players on big $$$$$ and the need to re-sign two more players on long term big $$$$ deals, why dont we have anything to show for it? It’s not like these players are young and then why are clubs who have been continually better than in the past, have $$$$ to target players in areas of need to strengthen their teams?
