Would need to be very good steak knives out of Kennedy and Owies.
Like 2nd round picks for each, at least one a F2.
At that's not gonna happen, certainly not with Owies anyway.

Listening to Austin I'm pretty confident that we won't back down from going to the draft and bringing some quality in. I also think we're in the race for Houston still, so I'll retain my optimism that we achieve it all.

One thought occurred to me ... Why are Port and Melbourne desperate to get a pick/another pick in the first round of this draft? Maybe they rate it as Austin does?

I guess it is Austin's job on the line. I always maintain that list managers and coaches have to be able to live or die by their own decisions. It's their livelihood.
100%

Most assessments say lots of high floor picks available inside the first 20, which would be appealing to a LM looking for balance and upside.

Two firsts would cover the risks of losing serviceable role players (e.g., Kennedy / Owies) with a chance at surpassing either or both in the short term, plus keeps an eye on the future. Two picks also gives us a chance to pivot if the players we want are already taken, or snatch up someone who has been left on the table (hopefully not Stocker style...).

If we can extend TDK and or Weiters this year, the draftees (cheaper than even Kennedy and Owies who we may offload) allow us to front end the Stars' contracts in 2025 making room in 2026 for a front ended FA contract. Re-negotiating TDK early would allow us to improve his average salary with an early payrise too.

Drafts after this year will be swiss cheesed by Tassy, so go hard when the wheel is full I reckon. Getting in early on TDK and Weiters solves the Tassy inflation problem too hopefully (tho MacAndrews situation is worrying).

Last bit of the rant, Austin sniffing around other trades and picks keeps prices fair, but he does it in a respectful way I feel. SOS is looking like becoming a disrespectful pain for doing this to us, like a d******d dad attending every house auction in his area just to bid up prices and feel like a millionaire. He's suited to a struggling club with that mindset. Austin fair negotiating approach reminds me more of the big clubs' strategies, which inspire sense of safety in their players and future trade targets (e.g., Eagles, Geelong, Sydney, Collingwood).

Got a lot of trust in Austin, has been shrewd and respectful and reckon has an eye for talent. Guess we'll see!

Long term big footy lurker, first time commenter.
Hearing Carlton are trying to pursue Mark Blicavs as a versatile veteran who can play all over the ground including ruck with premiership experience.
Will be 34 in late March. Been a great player for the cats. But he is almost cooked, capable of one more decent year.

Pitto was pretty poor this season. His knee caused him great concern. If he can get his knee right for next year, then I have

faith that he can be a very decent back-up for TDK again.

I don't want to trash your optimism, but I think it's misguided if you can't point to how it gets done.

Have no idea where its at but thats what i have heard
To me, the only way Blicavs could be considered is if it was in a swap for Pittonet.
Plenty of calls to trade Pitto, but it is too early, we need back up for TDK who will do the lion’s share in 2025. A year early to move Pitto on with O’Keeffe and to a lesser extent for the role, Lemmey still developing.

Collingwood obtaining GC's pick doesn't give them the right to trade for Houston exclusively. It just gives them a pick to be a part of the conversation. Port would be stupid to not play off both teams and get the best deal possible. At the end of the day, Port will trade Houston to his choice of club as long as both offers are comparable.

But tell me, even if Coll receive GC's pick, what can they offer that we don't have if we REALLY want him? This is where we need to be smart and pull out of the race if Collingwood's offer to Port gets ridiculous. Let the Pies overpay and cripple their ability to draft early this year and next. That's worst-case scenario for us it seems.

Nothing ground breaking but Gold Coast is not the only club we're discussing a pick swap with.

We've had discussions with Richmond about swapping future picks for picks this year. This would be done after their player deals are completed.
F3 for a current 3 would be handy to match campo bids. I can't see how those 4ths rounders we picked up last year will be of any use, given we can only go to the draft with as many picks as we have list spots.

From what I was told any pick under 30 Carlton is willing to trade for from the tigers.

Been told this from somebody at the Tigers not Carlton.

Port need a pick in this years first round so they don’t “max out” and can thereby trade an F1 for Lukosious.

The Houston angle is interesting. We must have communicated a pretty significant level of interest for him to still want us. Maybe playing it a bit coy. This is a back-to-back All Australian in his prime, not a fringe player. If our approach to him was, "you're not really a priority but we'll throw Port some loose change and see if they bite", he surely would have moved on.

We were really good at scoring, its something we improved a lot from our 2023 season, the big problem is we went from the 5th best defence (maybe 4th) in 2023 to the 12th in 2024.

WE were the 18th ranked team from conceding goals from D50 stoppages, 10 goals worse than 17th, we were down the bottom all year.

It’s hard to rationalise how we were so bad for so long and we failed to address it mid season.

The footy shows on a few occasions showed Saad to be one of our worse culprits in this area which was a big surprise.

The positive out of this is, if we could defend as a group in 2023 and failed in 24 with the same group, we can get back to that in 25, its purely a coaching issue imo.

Yeah agree. Not sure if it's an issue (as not a coach myself) but definitely a coaching "decision."

The consistent refusal to address leaking goals from stoppage tells me that we were aggressively structured to maximise our turnover scoring potential. IMO this lead to a false inflation of our best looking stat for the year (I reckon anyway). Saad positioned to be attacking in a similar way and got burnt regularly at those D50 stoppages.

When Saad does play a role on someone (e.g., Charlie Cameron), he rarely loses. Dont think we can blame Saad here, definitely a coaching question/issue.

Other thing I cant quite get my head around was our willingness to endure being locked in our D Half by the Ports and Brissys of the league, front half territory teams. I guess it makes for easier fast breaks / turn overs, which may be why Owies (smart, trustworthy, nominated decision maker) always got back quick on the fast breaks and kicked a few more than would be expected.

This approach necessitates strong one on one players as structures will get messed up by repeat entires into our D50. Ive mentioned before, but if one of our stars goes down, depth players simply cant match a star's one on one outputs. Especially when Russel was in a "lose a few" train them hard mindset.

Smarts down back was really lacking except for Weiters. Haynes helps here. F50 and fast breaking pacey players makes turnover scarier for our oppos - so Kemp and Williams forward makes sense to me on that logic. A Houston type moving ball more damagingly would make a big diff too for turnover consolidation. Together, the extra threats mean the opposition would have to structure up further back and take pressure off our D50.

Positional moves late last year, Haynes acquisition, and Voss's rumoured want of Houston tells me he is doubling down on our contest/turnover game plan. I love to watch it, but really hoping he is letting our smaller and outside players be ball movement specialists and not expecting them to be battering rams. That style doesnt stand up over 24 weeks, and we cannot afford the high probability of injuries destroying continuity during season and having us limp into finals again.

Wonder whether Caleb.. Daniels is a cheap Houston per the above logic?

Anyway, Rant!

He grew up as a Carlton supporter, his family are still Carlton supporters, very close with Voss and the Silvgani’s.

I think those ties are strong until we pull the plug and advise that we can’t facilitate a trade.

Riley Bev saying Tigers are likely to get pick 21 or 25 for Graham. They are gonna have a stack of picks after the trade period.

Houston deal is all over the place.
We would like him and he would like to come to us. He is leaving regardless
We want a first round pick in this years draft and won't change
Deals involving GCS, Port with Lukosis, Freo, Tigers, Lions could all affect this deal. Just so many scenarios
If Austin could somehow get Houston by using F1 & F2 but keeping a pick inside Top 18 he will do it. It may mean using 13 and moving back a few spots. Even having two picks inside 25 as opposed to just Pick 13.

May well be a case of who blinks first but this is long way from over
