Not sure umpires opinions are used to ascertain trade value of trade targets.
Brownlow at best is an indicator of the top midfielders in the game.

FINAL BROWNLOW LEADERBOARD

45 - Patrick Cripps CAR

38 - Nick Daicos COL

29 - Zak Butters PA

28 - Caleb Serong FRE and Isaac Heeney* SYD

27 - Tom Green GWS

26 - Adam Treloar WB

25 - Errol Gulden SYD and Matt Rowell GC

24 - Jai Newcombe HAW

Houston isn't going to bring us a flag mate... not even close...

Our midfield is screwed if Cripps or TDK goes down... God help us if we lose both for an extended amount of time...

You want to talk about dumb list management... how dumb would it be to spend another top pick on a half back, like we haven't already done that with Saad...
I'd hate to think how much poor defensively we'd be without Saad. I'd do that trade 100x over. Genuine gun.

The deep draft talk is a fallacy.
It’s impossible to know from year to year how players will adapt and perform at AFL level and very little comparison analysis takes place after the fact.
Draft picks outside the top five are way over valued.
Recruiters have got better as the years have gone on...

For example, pick 11 was originally not much better than a coin toss...

These days, better success.

(i would certainly try and split 11 - use part + whatever on Houston, the other on a kid).

Points wise #11 = 1329 (#46 = 330 points)

Pick 22: 845 + Pick 23: 815 = 1660.

Pretty sure clubs invest in resources to make informed decisions in this area.

We need to continue to invest in the draft and find players that will get us closer to challenging.

Same as the Coaches votes. Only Gulden and Cameron not mids in the top 20

Some strange metrics to justify the quality of a player, Nick Blakey must be a hack

Agree.

Rating players on umpires votes is a bit rich.

A reminder. Houston less than 5 votes.

We dont want to give up 1st rounders for him.

That's more than double what Charlie Curnow received...

Using Brownlow votes for measuring a player's draft value is a little foolish.

I'll go on the fact that Houston has been All Australian the last two years. That's a pretty solid achievement given the depth of talent in the game. He's easily worth a first rounder and a bit more.

Brownlow done and dusted
GF out of the way on Saturday
The AFL then free to let the games begin !!
What is Austin up to …
Are the club all in on a premiership …
They will still stick with the eye on the future imo. Draft, a few around the edges players. We will improve in 2025

Lukosius chooses Port.
This bodes well in getting Houston?

Yeah, perfect scenario for us. If Port are chasing players with big contracts and require trade collateral to make deals, they'll be more content to let Houston go to ensure they have the cap space.

If GC are happy to let Lukosius go for modest trade returns in order to get his contract off their books, that might also help Port justify taking unders for Houston.

"We let go of Houston but we got Lukosius." Houston is obviously a two-time All Australian but Lukosius is younger and if he gets it together, he has All Australian potential.

They signed Esava on 700k. They will be forced to trade out Houston it seems.

If not now with Cripps Curnow Walsh Weitering McKay TDK Saad all in their prime and a solid supporting cast, when do you think might be the right time to bite the bullet and launch the final assault on a premiership.
We’ll take the twins in the draft to compliment our current youth and can add NGA players next season with Walker to follow the season after.
If a club never has the courage to fully back themselves and take their shot at the title … what really is their purpose …
No fan of Geelong but have to admire the way they backed themselves, landed Cameron and nailed a flag they couldn’t have won without him …

That is a reflection of the recruiting of the time. In a deep draft you don't get frightened and trade your first round pick. Only an administrator or bureacrat uses averages to define strategy in a dynamic environment

Of the time? It’s the same every year, regardless if the draft is deep or not, we aren’t talking 30 years ago.

You don’t think clubs weigh up the certainty of bringing in a mature player who’s output you know vs an unknown quantity via the draft?

In reference to Houston, I just had a look at the 2021 1st round of the draft, it’s an awesome 1st round, they are 3 seasons in and there’s only 3 players in that 20 who this year would have had equal or greater output than Houston and they were taken in the top 4.

Where the list is at, potential risk, positional need would all be considerations, do you take the safe bet of the senior player or do you take the risk on a kid and hope they are better, in this case they would need to be better than a dual AA
