Message this morning from someone I trust that gets most things right. In response to questions I asked a day ago

1. SDK - No but we will always ask. He is happy at Cats
2. Houston - Port would have to move a fair bit on their position. Picks the issue not money
3. Papley - No
4. Looking at "player" to take over salary and get cheap. If his club signs their target he may be "forced" out and we will take contract
5. Petracca - Just won't happen and we could never satisfy asking price
6. Graham Wright spoken to about CEO role. Not interested in football role
7. A number of a DFA's being interviewed and having medicals
8. Perfect world we will get 2-3 first round picks

My comment: I know people would like to hear "big names" but I just can't see it. The messages to me have been consistent and for months. Draft picks, Campo twins and some targeted cheap trades or DFA's is our focus

This is why refilling from the draft is so important, not only does it refresh your list but it also refreshes your salary cap.
As stated in an earlier post, the difference between Owies, Young, Cunningham and 3 draftees could be close to 1mil in cap space. Obviously have 35 players between 23 and 28 on a list would be ideal, but its simple not possible to keep that many players of AFL standard happy financially and game timewise.

100% correct

And yet Cripps lasted to pick 13. Twelve other teams thought that they had found players better than him in his draft.

As Paul Simon was once moved to say "a man sees what he wants to see and disregards the rest".
Cripps was a hugely fortunate stroke of luck. It wasn't so much that he "lasted" until pick 13 and we saw something no one else did. At the time people thought we reached for him, but it made sense from a need/fit perspective as at the time we had a real need for an inside mid. He was mostly ranked late teens and we took him early teens - some even had him in the 20s.

We just got super lucky that he grew an extra 7cm after being drafted and had a huge, huge mindset shift leading to a dramatic physical change after his first season or 2. Would love to find another kid or 2 with his mindset.

Fiorini is my guess.

Love the insights Soap and I know this is in line with what you think is the best option for the club.

I will still claim that if this is the path we go down, then we have no money to seriously strengthen the list, regardless of any talk.

Hitting the draft and going after players on the cheap and DFAs whilst trading out contracted players is the sign of a club managing the cap and not one pushing for a premiership imo.

Very intrigued to see how this plays out.

Keep the news coming

4 would rule out Kelly.

Forced out. Would make me think it's an older player from a better team or team on the rise.

Also suggests a club confident of getting another player in on a good contract.

Who would be excess to Geelong's midfield if they're getting both Smith and Oliver?

Jargar O'Meara if Freo get Kelly?

Did they?
It's convoluted but Geelong traded their 2016 future 1st (first time a future pick was traded) for Henderson even though he was out of contract. We ended up trading this to GWS to get back into the 2015 draft with one of their picks (there were also other picks and players involved). We used that pick on Harry McKay.

The actual Gerlong first rounder ended up being used on Jarrod Berry the following year.

Irrelevant. Just what I am told

If what I am told is true we could easily fit in Houston and more in SC but it's the picks that are the issue. We are happy to 'bank' money and go hard for players in next few years

I'm still trying to get over the last time we low-balled a handy little small forward of ours!

With all due respect, Eddie had more talent in his left toe than Owies.

I like Owies but he’s expendable, if he’s being offered 500k a year for say 4 years then he leaves with my full appreciation.

Thanks again for all the info mate. Just on the above is it likely that we will receive a pick for taking on the contract - similar to Cats/Bowes deal?

Would spew if it was Jaeger, he went to Freo for not much more than peanuts and has done nothing.

Maybe someone with a back ended deal that would be worth at least a second otherwise? Not sure Freo is over paying anyone atm... why not Kelly at eagles?

Fiorini is my guess.
Weller would make more sense given the clues we've been given.

Fiorini on an inflated contract as an inside mid that ends next year... Wouldn't make sense to get rid of Kennedy to replace him with Fiorini and I doubt GCS would care about getting his contract off their books with only a year left.

Weller a dashing half back/wing with 2 years to run on a fairly chunky deal when he signed it. Would play Rd 1 for us and with Rioli and Noble coming in his spot may be in jeopardy at the Suns.

Pretty decent player when healthy too Weller.

The thing to realise is that with list management, signing decent-to-big money deals for 4 or 5 or 6 years isn't just about the next year. It's about the 4, 5, 6 years +
By not spending up in the next fortnight might not mean we're just managing the cap and not pushing for a flag. There might be a FA or out-of-contract player in 12 months time that is much better for us to win multiple flags, or keeping the window open for much longer, and going in for say Houston now, who hasn't really been in our plans might alter our ideal management.

Also, we've got 2 superstars coming out of contract in 12 months who we need to re-sign. Keeping them is going to push us towards a premiership a lot more than any player available in the next 2 weeks.
