Is it societal progress that mistakes like ones Ross made are now irredeemable? Seems like it's not societal progress it's more like the dissolution of society.

People make mistakes and then grow from them. If mistakes are all considered fatal then you end up segregating everyone.

For the record I'm not against Carlton respects. I don't think it's a valid reason to rule out Ross Lyon though.
I agree. There are plenty of other reasons for ruling out Ross Lyon.
The main one being in my opinion, he is not going to coach a premiership side ever.

Carlton Respects is the greatest initiative this club has done in my lifetime.

That being said, people need to stop thinking this is the only reason Lyon didn’t want to go through a process. There were serious red flags of a toxic club culture, falling out and alienation with the younger playing group and preferential treatment of certain players in the lead up to his dismissals.

Enough question marks for a request to enter an interviewing process.

The fact he immediately pulled out says an awful lot.

The President literally told us they are looking for an experienced coach. That is why.

Be good to know his reasons why?

- because he wants the big name?
- because it’s the easier option?
- because of the perceived backlash he may get for choosing another first timer

Forget about whether it is right for our club or not. It’s about doing due diligence on the best option.

You hope they are doing that due diligence

A Geelong poster on a different part of BF wrote this yesterday in regards to Cook to Carlton, “Also; doubt you get him. Already committed to the club to run the foundation and work for the stadium trust board to oversee the next redevelopment. His baby.“

This makes the most sense to me. Possibly this is what the 45 min phone call was about. Sayers saying err, sorry Ross, our background digging has turned up some info the rest of the board are not comfortable with. Everyone feels it would be better for you to go through an interview process to discuss the issues.

Ross has then gone ah well, f*** it then, I'm out.

But I have NFI like everyone else not ITK.

Can I ask how you would feel if it was your daughter, sister, mother, friend?

I'm going to choose to believe this question is asked in good faith and not a loaded, throw away question aimed at making me out to look like a vilain with a 'wrong' opinion.

My first and main priority would have been for her wellbeing. Obviously I would have more of the facts if it was of those people close to me and we wouldn't be speculating so much. I would advise strongly that she persue charges against said person if it warranted it and go through the judicial system for due process and punishment. I would also aid in whatever was needed to help her recover/move on if it was required. Taking a financial settlement muddies the waters massively and I would question why someone would go down that route if it was egregious enough to raise as problematic/unacceptable behavior. In the past when things like this have happened to people close to me personally, I strongly supported them and encouraged legal, due process.

As it stands, Ross has not been charged with anything, by the AFL or the legal system therefore IMO, it's a very slippery slope to be cancelling/not affording people opportunities based on what is hearsay and under confidentiality but something that is happening in society on the regular currently unfortunately.

Maybe because he wants Carlton to be less shit at the footballs.

As I have been saying was a train wreck waiting to happen. There are reasons why freo wanted him out the way they did.

But supporters wanted Ross cos it’s Ross and he’s the boss and the messiah said we needed an experienced boss possibly named Ross …

Not sure if this counts as a #blumour or not as it’s first hand info, but according to one of our players:

Lyon became disenchanted when he was told by Greg Williams on Tuesday that he needed to be involved in the process.

Hence Lyon calling Sayers the same day to clarify “the process” as he was under the impression that he had been head hunted by the President (who wanted to give him the job) and therefore didn’t need any form of process.

Im not sure if “the process” means he was up against other applicants or if it just meant he needed to present to the panel; but either way, Williams and Sayers aren’t on the same page (already!).

I'm in software and a bit the same when companies or govt departments want to go through a full-blown Request for Proposal (RFP) process - can eat up weeks and months sometimes only to miss out on the deal.

We often say go through your RFP process and if you don't find a suitable vendor come and talk to us !

Every single major project has this - its completely standard - I too have been building software for government and private corporations globally since the 1990's.

If you said what you are claiming in almost every business you would be fired on the spot. No doubt they are burdensome but all business quotes, proposals and bids generally are. Almost all industry have them and certainly any industry dealing with government unless they are already on the approved tender short list. Which you are clearly not.

Maybe you are dealing with Tonga or selling kids apps.

Its completely and utterly standard - you would not even get the opportunity to deliver into government without it nowadays as its entirely part of the process so i highly doubt your entire story. (Maybe some remote regional council - even then I doubt it).

And this by a Bulldogs supporter right now about if Lipinski is a good player. “No. Slow, crap defensively and like Higgins a pretty kick but not accurate. Crab/list clogger etc Inside mid whos too good for VFL but not good enough for AFL.”

Sounds like the type we shouldn’t be targeting. More Cerra’s, less Newneses.

I am so proud of the club for getting behind this initiative.

One of my biggest fears is that my daughters will entertain the idea of “fixing” some guy and it ends violence. I had my turn ten years ago, not to Simone’s terrible level, thank God.

These abusers are very manipulative, very good at what they do. I didn’t speak up for years until one day I thought he was actually going to kill me on a bush walk (his words), then I quietly started packing my belongings and moved out, but by but, until I was all set up in my unit and could tell him I was going. Bullies, aggressive manipulators, abusers. I’ve got no time for any of it.

You would hope so indeed. Especially considering there was another big rival club also recruiting a coach at the same time as us.

I give you Kane Cornes ...

But there are two things you can’t criticise Carlton for.

One is moving on from Teague, that was absolutely the right call.
And two, you cannot attack the club for running a proper process to find the next coach.

Luke Sayers

This.

Lyon massively rates himself. Sounds more of a dummy spit that anything else.

Time at Freo was a down hill run.

I think this is an excellent point. Donald Trump's behaviour both alleged and admitted, was far more reprehensible than Ross Lyon's, and yet society did not deem that it precluded him from the most powerful and responsible job in the USA (more's the pity but let's not go there). The problem we have is that society has not settled on where to draw the line on a case by case basis. That will probably take another couple of generations, and dammit I want a flag before then, possibly two.

So in the meantime, CFC is an organisation which is run for the members by the Board. It is incumbent on them to make the call on our behalf. If any of us don't like it, we can vote them out at the next opportunity, or choose not to renew out memberships.

As for me, I would choose not to invite Ross Lyon over for a family dinner, but I would not object to him as coach of my football team. For me, the line falls somewhere between the two.

Haha, the cross-coder. Societal progress = virtue signalling and hyperbole. You can get all sorts of illumination for even the darkest caves now.
Society and people change small amounts over long periods of time
What was acceptable in the past slowly becomes unacceptable
Lyons behaviour was unacceptable hid it in a NDA doesn’t seem to have owned it or publicly apologised points to a major weakness in his character
I have no problem having him front the board and have him own his actions to fit the Carlton objective of respecting women
If his ego and pride can’t can’t handle the scrutiny it’s his loss not ours
Respect women stoping family violence is in no way an impediment to us winning
I find it bizarre that people think because Carlton respect women it makes less it of a club
