Blues suspend Betts, Houlihan, Walker

So would it be far to say that the culprit that forced Levi to drink too much was either Betts, Houlihan, Walker.

Our does that culprit go free??? or was it the entire group????

This seems to have been forgotten altogether. Suppose they can't suspend every player, but I agree that they have gone a bit light on the whole thing.

Wasn't it a very senior player,which Houlihan is,involved in that incident ?

Suspending them from NAB Cup crap isn't much of a punishment.Suspending them for 2-3 home and away games would be more of a punishment.

Two words - Steve Johnson.
The background: (thankyou to http://www.thecattery.com.au/Articles/08012007_2.php)

"In 2005, Johnson and fellow erratic forward Andrew Mackie were arrested after an incident outside Geelong nightclub 'Home House, following a round 19 loss to St Kilda. Keeping in check with previous incidents involving alcohol at the club such as Ronnie Burns, neither player was suspended and fined just $1,000 apiece.

But the Home House incident wasn't the first for Johnson; his struggles to maintain fitness and a place in the AFL stem from another incident involving alcohol, at the Torquay pub in late December 2003. Johnson, who was earlier ejected from the Torquay Hotel, attempted to regain entry by climbing a fence. He fell, broke his ankle and has played just 40 out of a possible 71 games since."

Steve was dealt a much harsher penalty for similarly drunken but legal behavior - BUT - it was decided by his own playing group a very good idea in my mind.

Steve (to his credit), took it on, did his time missing out on six (regular season) games. He came back into the team and went on to play to his potential. Won Norm Smith medal in GF same year.

His suspension sent a very strong message to the rest of the group. In the summer of 06/07 after a pretty horrid year (10th), Geelong seemingly decided to stop taking the piss and pull together to win the flag. So if they were taking this mission very, very seriously, it meant dealing with Steve with a rather heavy hand.

So with Steve's turn-around in mind, tougher would have been better for Carlton in my mind. :)

A month ban from training???

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to give them more training, at unreasonable hours.

It seems kinda like being suspended from school, you know it should be bad, but you can't work out how.

The punishment fits the timing. If it was during the season, carlton would have definitely given them weeks, but they did it in the off season and they need to get their comeuppance now. They will be feeling pretty bad and segregated over at the bullants i think, and won't be fully back within the team environment until after the NAB cup.

If they gave them 4 weeks each, they would be just scooting along now and having a slow start to the season just like their captain. thats no punishment.

this was in the Off season

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/03/17/2192021.htm?section=sport

and so was Fev's display on Brownlow night.

CFC being soft yet again ! NAB cup games, wow big deal. Missing Premiership home and away games is the only deterent that should be implemented on this sort of behaviour !!!!!

laughed at Kernahan saying that they were close to being sacked. Yeah right as if any team is gonna sack three players before the season and be three short for the whole season.Stop with the bullsh!t Kernahan we're not stupid.

The media's really gone in to bat for Judd. I'm impressed.

Their argument continues to be that he can't be in 25 different places at once.

The Levi incident happened on the boat.

Judd was on the boat.

He only needs to be in one place.

On the boat.

Which he was.

Well done, AFL media :D

Wet lettuce leaf.

Particularly as Houlihan and Betts are serial offenders.

This is a good point. I personally think Betts has a horrible attitude and would like to have seen him suspended for the first 3 rounds just as a result of regular misdemeanors. Last season he also trained with the Bullants for a bit because he came back a fatty.

Although I think the punishments are a little bit on the light side you can't look at it so simply and take it simply on face value as you have done. You need to consider the fact that it means they won't be a part of the training for tactics and structure for next season, they will only really have 4 weeks of pre-season left after their ban to prove themselves, and their fitness and ability to be ready for round 1 won't be as good as those without the bans. Plus with no NAB cup games they have less chance to prove themselves ready for round 1.

I think the punishment is a bit light, but we won't know the full severity of it until round 1, because it's a punishment which could very easily result in them missing round 1 selection, and from there it can be very hard to force your way back into the team.

We'll have to wait and see to determine how severe the punishment actually is. The only thing I hope is that they are suspended for all pre-season games, whether we are eliminated from the NAB cup or not. If we get eliminated in round 1 of the NAB Cup against Sydney and then the 3 are brought back in for the next game the punishment is a bit of a joke, and unfortunately I fear that is what is going to happen.

I don't want to let facts get in the way, but to everyone who is winging that they weren't banned form any regular season matches i would urge you to listen to the entire press conference.

Julian Destoop "Did you consider suspensions from the home and away season?"

Stephen Kernahan "... i think, actually the way it's set out they will probably be very lucky to be playing the first couple of rounds." he then continued on to say "I think it will be difficult for them to play rounds one and two."

And to anyone who thinks they are just saying this and they will bring them in round one regardless, I personally would find it hard to believe any club would bring in a player that hadn't played with the team for that long.

I bet all 3 will play round 1.

The season proper is still months away by which time no one will care plus your captain still has a few weeks off.

it's pretty transparent what the club is trying to do here.

Slapped on the wrist with a wet lettuce leaf by a president who's probably secretly disappointed that they didn't go harder.

Nice to see Carlton continuing their form from the last decade as the comedy club.:thumbsu:

They didn't kill anyone. 4 weeks away from the club is sufficient. Some are saying 'oh look what happened with Fev'. But that is Fev, he has the brain of a 3 year old.

I think the players will be told that the month of January is theirs to choose as to what role they play for the club. They can run and work hard off the track, and keep the weight off, or they can simply slack off. Their decision will be plain to see when they return to the club.

Smart move by Carlton. It measures the commitment of each player to keep up with the playing group.

Judging by those comments, Carlton plan on hitting the NAB Cup hard by playing their best 22 or close to it. From that they'll infer which players are in the best position to serve the club at the start of the season.

However, this doesn't mean the trio are banned from playing and shouldn't be used as a reference to the harshness of the penalty.

Wow podgeyhodge has another go at Judd ................ It must be a day finishing in y ......................

I have said it once and I will say it again, your obsession with Judd is plain pathetic podeyhodge, GET A BLOODY LIFE YOU TOOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very, very soft by the Blues - especially regarding Betts. He was arrested for being drunk in public and is a repeat offender, exactly the same scenario Steve Johnson found himself in at the start of 2007.

Here's the press release we put out at the time:

Geelong forward Steve Johnson has been suspended by the club from the senior playing group indefinitely.

All of Johnson’s training will take place with the club’s VFL squad under coach Leigh Tudor and he will not be invited back with the senior squad until such time as he proves that his attitude and behaviour have changed and that he is willing to be a responsible and contributing member of the club. Johnson’s suspension from the senior group will be reviewed no sooner than the sixth round of the season.

He wasn't excused from training like the Carlton guys, he was forced to train just as hard as he should be with our VFL squad. He also had to impress everybody including the leadership group sufficiently before he was invited to return to training with the seniors. Even though he had impressed plenty of people by the time the AFL season started, he had to sit out the first five matches.

We all know the story - in the three seasons since he's become a dual premiership player, dual All-Australian and Norm Smith medallist. If we hadn't imposed such a harsh penalty in the first place there's every chance he would have been delisted/traded.

You can't expect to change your club's culture by handing our lame penalties like this.

Agreed, exactly what I interpreted as the intent of the punishment, it is very much in the players court to show they want to be there or not. Your slack for 4 weeks in pre-season, it does have a measure of hindrance for the rest of the season, sort of like missing pre-season with injury yet they are not injured and have an opportunity to take it upon themselves and show commitment to the club. These bloke are not that far from the door if they fail to do this.
