Very strong rumour around that Bomber Thompson has already agreed in principle to return 'home' to the Dons this year.

Story is that Bomber was very upset with the footy review last year (on the record as calling it 'stupid') and early in the season reached an in principle agreement with the Dons to coach them in 2008. All parties are desperately trying to keep a lid on it given Geelongs likely grand final berth but Essendon is under extreme pressure from its supporters over its apparent lack of a coach at a time when Judd is on the market and they are desperate to replace ageing stars.

Re: Bomber Thompson - back to the bombers

It'll be great to see a coachless Essendon during trade week, forcing Judd to slip through their fingers when he ends up at Carlton. :thumbsu:

Re: Bomber Thompson - back to the bombers

There was a report in yesterday's Age that Bomber isn't interested in being a career coach and wants to move into business...which is a fairly strong indication he won't switch clubs. That and his fairly well-documented marriage break-up and settlement in Geelong.

Re: Bomber Thompson - back to the bombers

That'll be bigger than the Judd trade if it was to happen....

But then again, if the Cats lose to Collingwood this week, it might just happen.

Re: Bomber Thompson - back to the bombers

Bomber has stated he doesn't see himself as a career coach. Said that after his stint at Geelong he will head into other business ventures.

Re: Bomber Thompson - back to the bombers

Yep heard the interview on before the game where he said he does not want to be a career coach.

Nice way of avoiding the topic I thought and a further indication that something is going on. All he has done since he finished playing footy is coach, who would hire him on the sort of money he is on? It is called a smokescreen.

He is going 'home'.

Says the man who said coaching is just a job. I hope Essendon supporters aren't getting their hopes up yet. Will be bitterly dissapointed.

Re: Bomber Thompson - back to the bombers

You bought that?

So your buying into other rumors, nothing of which has been linked to bomber at all? I no which i would have more faith in..

Well it makes some sense.

Lets face it, it is pretty obvious that Essendon are after a coach that is still involved in finals. Look at the candidates:

Malthouse - contracted, highly unlikely

Laidley - working out his deal an outside chance

Williams - contracted and has often professed he has two loves when it comes to footy, Port who his dad coached and the Pies where he played. I think this makes the Dons unlikely.

Bomber - Essendon man, would be a popular choice and was also very annoyed by the review. Most likely IMO. He has been evading the questions all year and this rumour might be closer to the truth than most believe.

My gosh - I just came on here too - haven't posted in ages but I heard this as well but can't find it on any news sites.

Understand that he made up his mind long ago and it had been a done deal all long - even regardless if Geelong win the flag.

Has it ever happened before that a coach has left a club even after winning a premiership?

Jezza, 1979, after the george Harris saga and Jezza backed Harris

I keep hearing that Essendon have thrown the cheque book at him (something like $3 million over 3 years) and that he is certain to accept after the PF/GF. Apparently he has some beef with the board and win or lose he will coach Essendon next year.

I know he used to live in Melbourne and commute to Geelong. Is this still the case?

Would be hard on his family if he spends so much time traveling.
