i think siddle might get the nod over bollinger coz of the whole home ground thing, if everyone is fit. wud be hard to drop bollinger tho.

hilf would have to be about the first bowler picked if fit tho surely? johnson is the most talented bowler in the side by far but his form hasn't been great recently.

That whole home ground thing where, he did nothing except for one session?

Johnson playing on talent expired ten tests ago, Johnson has to play on merit because what talent he has, surely doesn't warrant selection anymore.

Johnson: 57 wickets at 29 for the year. 17 wickets at 28 v West Indies
Siddle: 43 wickets at 28 for the year. 3 wickets at 70 v West Indies.
Hauritz: 22 wickets at 36 for the year. 11 wickets at 33 v West Indies.

I'd go with all 4 if they are fit and conditions suit.

No swing, no Hilfenhaus.

Then again, it doesn't matter who we pick if Ponting keeps wasting the new ball on Johnson.

i'd probably go for bollinger myself mate, just pointing out the selectors like to have a victorian playing when aus play at the mcg so i reckon theyd go for siddle.

as for johnson he's been out of sorts but not enough to drop. 17 wickets at 28 probably does him favours considering his series but it's not bad enough to think about dropping a bloke who's the best bowler in the world when on song.

you can't drop Bollinger after his performance in the last test and has been rated by Gayle as our best bowler
Hilfenhaus has been our best bowler this year
Johnson hasn't been at his best but he still takes wickets
keep Siddle out until he takes his test spot back with domestic form

I think Siddle will play, and deserves to. He was our best bowler in the latter six months of last year(young cricketer of the year) , bowled well at the Gabba without luck(some self inflicted with a wicket off a no-ball) then was injured at the Adelaide oval as he was overbowled because he was bowling so well. That is not someone you drop. Mind you, there is one rule for NSw and one for everyone else(plus Hussey) so it wouldnt surprise me if he was 12th man.

We can drop him easily

And now forget the bias.
The other three pacemen took wickets against the West Indies, Siddle didn't.
Hilfenhaus offers swing and thus has an advantage over the other pacemen in terms of selection.
Bollinger is the inform bowler in the country.

So it comes between Johnson and Siddle. Yes Siddle has been unlucky and Johnson was lucky but he was taking nearly 6 wickets a test against the West Indies while Siddle was taking nearly 2 a test.

I have been a fan of Hauritz for a long time, but I think he needs to take a bag soon to shut up the doubters. Watson bowling some decent spells and taking the workload off the three quicks is probably helping Hauritz.

Without doubt, the bowling attack for Melb should be:

Bollinger
Hilfenhaus
Johnson
Hauritz
with Watson

That is our best combo at the moment. I like Siddle (and I'm a Vic), but I sometimes feel that him and MJ in the same team is too leaky. Bollinger gives that aggro and willingness that Siddle gives, but displayed a lot of control in Perth as well.

With Watson going so well with the ball (in spite of w***erish celebrations), if Hauritz isn't taking wickets on the last days of tests soon it may be time to look for a new, more attacking spinner (and maybe a young one without great figures but with good potential). I'd give Hauritz this series to cement the spot.

Well that made it easier slightly, if Siddle doesn't perform and Hilfy is right for the SCG it will be interesting seeing what happens.

Just wanna know how many wickets did Hauritz take in the second innings? He will never win test matches for Australia so get rid of him. Stop hanging on to him and hoping he'll eventually take wickets or spin a ball.

we need a spinner to balance our attack and he is the best spinner currently when you include everything.

i have a feeling that Lawson doesn't even follow shield cricket

he was at the nsw-vic game on sunday from memory. at least physically...

i hear what youre saying, but if a spinner is holding up an end should he get a gig by default?

its a good point, apart from on a very seaming/swinging deck we have looked a better side with a spinner in it. Even then our bowling has been weak.

If we went down the track of not playing a Hauritz, personally id have McDonald as his replacement, nagging bowler, puts on a dime can get swing/seam on any surface.

I just cant see the selectors not playing a spinner and almost certainly hauritz until a smith/holland/bailey whoever jumps up with some stand out performances
