For me it is no contest. Cyril is a player i would go to the football to see, no matter which club he played for.

After one year of AFL to his name, he has already gone past Bryce Gibbs. He has it all. Brilliant overhead and on the ground, effective in close and out wide, brilliant kicking skills and already arguably the best tackler in the game. Also in the top 5 for assists in the AFL this year. Like some of the best midfielders, he is extremely difficult to tackle and possesses fantastic core strength. And he doesn't lack any pace or acceleration either.

Gibbs is also known as an all-rounder, with some good skills in various departments, but for mine, none of these match the brilliance of Cyril's abilities. Yet a lot of people take it as a given that Bryce Gibbs is innately superior to Cyril, end of story.

Thoughts?

seems pointless to compare them as they are both very different players, i think cyril is great and never seen a player play as consistently as he did as a small forward.. also he is good for the game and great to watch.. still im not putting gibbs down i love him tink he'll be great, has great composure size and footy brain. could be anything. but yeh pointless thread

What a ridiculous comparison.

One is a small forward and one is a midfielder.

FWIW I think that Rioli is more exciting to watch but Gibbs will be the better player.

I think the arrival of Judd made life a little eaiser for Gibbs (good luck to him). He's become a solid contributor to the Blues and will be for the next 10 or so years. He doesn't have that electrifying burst but he's developing well and is easily in the starting 22.

Cyril had a few off days this year but as a rookie it's to be expected. Yes he's extremely quick off the mark and does have great evasive skills. He still is not targetted by opposition defences as yet and so life is relatively easy. Yes I'd pay to see him and that effort in the 3rd of the GF was sensational.

I believe Cyril's role is more in the forward line whereas BG's role is mainly a mid (Blues fans correct me here if need be) so the comparison isn't quite apples and apples.

Perhaps a better comparison is Xavier and BG.

I said above that I think Xavier would be a better person to compare BG to. I agree with the BG >> XE post.

Who in the Blues lineup would you compare Cyril to? Eddie?

but what is the point of omparing eddie to cyril, clearly cyril is better

already arguably the best tackler in the game

Pretty much destroyed any credibility you already had. If Brett Kirik was reading this he would punch his screen.

And for a token Carlton plug: Adam Bentick has one of, if not the highest tackles per game count in the AFL.

From an unbiased perspective (im trying): what midfielders can shut down opponenets to 10 disposals a game, yet also get 30 touches and 3 goals themselves? Gibbs can apply a hard tag, yet act like an elite midfielder when he has the ball. That is special.

The op is clearly a teenager so don't paint all Hawk supporters with the same brush.

All supporters see their teams players through rose coloured glasses.

Gibbs and Rioli are just two young and very talented players just making their way in the AFL.

The Hawks are wrapped with Riolis 1st year playing in every game and showing his brilliance on GF day.

Carlton would be very happy with Gibbs as he looks a 10 year class player.

Leave the chest thumping to Bay 13.

Ciril's great, we all love watching him play, forget the comparisons, it's too early and....well....pointless.

Agreed. Just trying to point out (to the OP) that to draw a comparison between two players at least get the from the same position grouping. As I've only watched about 2 Blues gamesthis year I wanted confirmation that Eddie would've been a better choice and that the choice was role based and not race based.

Wow I've gone all PC!

They are the small crumbing forwards of their respective teams?

But yes Cyril clearly has Betts covered.
how about comparing franklin to fevola- we know franklin will be better, but both playing at the very best most exciting forwards in the league.. i'd say franklin still has him covered but not as much as some might say

Great post, make a poor comparision and include a player you have a bias toward. Then finish with a claim you attribute to the masses refuting your argument before you get a reply.

You may be the first person in the universe to make this comparison. I cant believe anyone else would bother.

Who has done that?

Bryce Gibbs certainly hasn't

I think Gibbs and Rioli have "champion" written all over them. They are two of the best young talents in the AFL and already they are making their experienced opponents look a bit silly. If both of them have have luck with injuries and they stay fit over the next 5-6 seasons, then we could be talking about two future Brownlow medallists.

Rioli has those electrifying evasive moves that I haven't seen since his uncle Michael Long was at his peak. Sometimes it's like watching Neo from The Matrix dodging bullets, as he weaves his way through traffic, then stops and lets everyone run past, clutching at thin air. There's not much of him, but he has a lot of ticker. Just an incredible first season of football. The knockers and naysayers think us Hawk fans are going overboard. They don't know what they are talking about. I can't remember ANYONE playing with such poise in their first year of football, at such a young age.

Gibbs is one hell of a smooth mover. He is a Rolls-Royce. He was the consensus first pick in the 2006 draft and this season, you could see why. Good size, quick enough, silky skills. He's had a nice, gentle apprenticeship in the AFL playing at half back and tagging the best midfielders. Some folks have called him "Squibbs", but the important thing is that he has come through unscathed. Judd/Gibbs/Murphy is going to be a hell of a combination.

I've noticed that Gibbs (and his mate Murphy) were prone to taking a dive or ducking the head on a regular basis in 2008, conning the umpires and winning cheap free kicks. Hopefully Gibbs gets this out of his game and stays on his feet. It'd be a shame to see a generation of the game's best footballers (Joel Selwood included) play like pansies throughout their careers. Although, this is probably more of an umpiring issue than a personal attack on the guy.
