Bryce Gibbs v Cyril Rioli

Pretty much destroyed any credibility you already had. If Brett Kirik was reading this he would punch his screen.

And for a token Carlton plug: Adam Bentick has one of, if not the highest tackles per game count in the AFL.

From an unbiased perspective (im trying): what midfielders can shut down opponenets to 10 disposals a game, yet also get 30 touches and 3 goals themselves? Gibbs can apply a hard tag, yet act like an elite midfielder when he has the ball. That is special.
He doesnt mean the most tackles, he means the BEST tackler in the game. Clearly has 1 of the best tackling techniques in the game. Christ Max Rooke and Nathan Bock couldnt get past him and they are giants compared to him.

Remember the big stink surrounding Adelaide's claim to Bryce Gibbs under the father/son rule?
The decison seems so wrong in hindsight, doesn't it?

His father, Ross Gibbs had played 253 games for Glenelg, but they only counted the games since 1991 when the Crows joined the AFL. I'm not sure Bryan Cousins played that many games in the WAFL from 1987 onwards. You gotta love the people running the game and making up the rules as they go along. :D

Carlton with all of their number one picks, Adelaide with none...
Have the Crows even got ONE player on their list who was drafted in the Top 10?
There was Brent Reilly at 11 or 12.

From memory Ben Cousins was brought up in W.A. and chose not to go to Geelong under the father son rule where he would end up playing in a state where he was not brought up.

For me it is no contest. Cyril is a player i would go to the football to see, no matter which club he played for.

After one year of AFL to his name, he has already gone past Bryce Gibbs. He has it all. Brilliant overhead and on the ground, effective in close and out wide, brilliant kicking skills and already arguably the best tackler in the game. Also in the top 5 for assists in the AFL this year. Like some of the best midfielders, he is extremely difficult to tackle and possesses fantastic core strength. And he doesn't lack any pace or acceleration either.

Gibbs is also known as an all-rounder, with some good skills in various departments, but for mine, none of these match the brilliance of Cyril's abilities. Yet a lot of people take it as a given that Bryce Gibbs is innately superior to Cyril, end of story.

Thoughts?

Of course yours is an unbiased opinion , I would prefer to see bryce Squibs as i feel he will turn out to be twice the player young cyril will be

I think the only reason people are underestimating rioli is because he's not a midfielder at the moment, and he's indigenous. People are obviously expecting him to be a flash in the pan.

Stopped reading this thread after the 1st paragraph.

Dud thread!

Based on right now - Bryce Gibbs without question.

In 10 years time... Who knows!

cyril is a fantastic and an exciting player to watch. although im not a hawthorn fan, i love watching them play because of buddy and junior rioli. i would rate rioli ahead of gibbs because of what he did in the grand final.

Why don't you compare Dean Cox and Brendan Fevola...poles apart!!!

Why is it that you need to compare Rioli to Gibbs??

Different roles within a team, Rioli played as a small forward in the premiership winning team with very good forwards around him. Whereas Gibbs was playing through the midfield where its harder to win the ball and look flashy like Rioli clearly is.

I would still take Gibbs over Rioli as premier midfielders which Gibbs will be in a few years (just watch him in 09, trust me) last longers than flashy fowards do (eg. Davis & Davey)....

And Ted Hopkins is one of the all time greats of our game because of what he did in the 1970 GF. I'm sorry for you that Gibbs did not make it to Adelaide, but come on, a flashy HFF in the mould of an Aaron Davey or an Eddie Betts, versus a player who can play tall & small, matching up against the likes of Adam Goodes & Chad Cornes & winning, or putting in matchwinning performances in the midfield eg 20 disposals & 3 goals v Richmond.

Rioli was exciting this year & my tip for the Rising Star award, but it will be interesting to see if he will ever become a midfielder or continue to be a HFF. Who can forget the way Aaron Davey burst onto the scene & although he is still a good player, he will never be ranked up with the greats of the Melbourne Football Club.

There's no need for this kind of bias on this board. To describe Rioli as a player in the mould of Eddie Betts and Aaron Davey is clearly misleading.

Who can forget the way Jimmy Plunkett burst onto the scene for a year? Should we compare him to Gibbs and say that Bryce has only a year or two left at AFL Level? Of course not. These comparisons can be made, but they are all unwarranted. Rioli has too much class and all-round ability, not to mention pedigree, to be the next Aaron Davey or Eddie Betts.

As if.

That logic is so flawed and typical of BF. "That player plays in a winning side so therefore he is overated." And similiarly, "This player accumulates 25+ possessions in a losing side so therefore is he underated."

Just watch Rioli in '09, trust me... :thumbsu:

This is the most stupid thread and comparison.

Why would the OP pick these two players to compare other than some inane attempt to prove that Carlton botched their pick with Gibbs ???

They are totally different players.

However, if as another insecure Hawthorn supporter, you need validation on how great your team and recruiting staff are, then lets just put out a full thread comparing every player and get it over and done with before the season starts.

A very odd comparison.

Surely "Fevola vs Tambling?", "Kruezer vs Milne?", and "Dew vs Dal Santo?" comparison threads can't be too far away.

People who should be banned from making player x V player y threads when one of those players play for the team they support. Clearly we already know what your opinion will already be.
