EXCLUSIVE: NATHAN Buckley is believed to have told North Melbourne he won't be taking its coaching job.
Buckley is understood to have advised the Roos of his decision this morning.

The decision reinforces the view he will return to Collingwood as senior assistant Michael Malthouse for at least the next two years.

Neither North Melbourne chairman James Bradshaw nor chief executive Eugene Arocca could be reached this afternoon.

The Roos had told Buckley he had first call on the job vacated recently by Dean Laidley. They are believed to have offered him $2.8m for four years.

North now will spread the net in search of its next coach.

Former players John Longmire and David King are expected to be candidates, while Hawthorn assistant and for mer Essendon and Port Adelaide premiership player Damien Hardwick is expected to attract keen interest.

Neither Buckley nor manager Craig Kelly could be reached for comment.

1 down, 1 to go.

Still seems as if Richmond will offer him a big deal or at least approach him before the deal is signed at Collingwood.

The good news is, once Bucks is signed up, they can sign MM too, oh wait, shouldn't it work the other way around.

Did Bucks suggest North had a better young list than Tigers or did I dream that? If so, seems unlikely Bucks will want to chance his arm at the Tigers gig and risk ending his career before it started which means we bag this peacock.

If Bucks gets the gig as VFL coach that is a big fat one. Talk about it!

Love your work in Bay 13 Sunny but this is GOLD!

Bucks decision really, would be he'd be looking for a young list that is likely to challenge in the next few years. Very few clubs are in that boat.

We are!!

Buckley turns down Kangaroos: report

July 27, 2009 - 7:21PM

Former Collingwood captain Nathan Buckley seems set to return to the Magpies as part of a dream coaching ticket alongside Mick Malthouse after reportedly turning down an offer to coach North Melbourne.
The Kangaroos had made it clear that even though Buckley had no previous coaching experience, he was their No.1 choice from 2010 onwards after Dean Laidley stood down as coach midway through this season.
But Buckley met with North Melbourne officials today, where it was understood he would turn down a four-year deal worth approximately $2.8 million.
Channel Nine reported tonight Buckley had turned down the offer.
Collingwood directors were meeting tonight.

Club president Eddie McGuire told Channel Nine the topic of Buckley would be on the agenda.
"At some stage we'll be talking about it," he said.
"We'll have something to announce hopefully shortly."
The only other vacant head coaching position in 2010 is at Richmond where Buckley had indicated he was prepared to undergo an interview.
But he could be confirmed as Malthouse's assistant for the next two years within the next few days.

That arrangement would probably entail Buckley replacing the 55-year-old Malthouse as head coach in 2012 after two years learning the ropes.

Buckley told Radio 3AW that the timing today’s meeting with North had been agreed to a month ago.
‘‘The whole arrangement is that I've been open, honest and transparent with any of the organisations I've spoken to," he said.

’’They've known exactly where I've stood the whole way along and I've tried to maintain that integrity with them throughout the process.
‘‘... (Collingwood) has been an option right along and it's not one I've discounted at any stage, it's one that other people have discounted for me.

’’I've kept an open mind throughout the whole year."

Sportingbet Australia have now installed former Kangaroos star and current Sydney assistant John Longmire as the $3 favourite to take the top job at Arden St.
Caretaker coach Darren Crocker is the second favourite at $3.50 ahead of David King and Damien Hardwick (both $5).

Why would he not go to Collingwood?
Best supporter base
Best facilities
An up and coming group that is still young yet battle ready and finals football toughened
Best support staff
Financially stable
Able to invest in all the neccessary support staff in order to succeed
Two years fully paid for development program, with a warm coaches seat waiting for you.

Supporters that eat their own
President that is clueless
Board that is divided
Support staff non-existent
Consistently killing coaching careers regardless if the coach is experienced or not

well, lets face it they should really be called the Gold Coast Kangaroos. This is their last hurrah. If it fails you might as well get them playing in the VFL.
Taking the passanger seat for two years under MM is insignificant considering Buckley should go on and have a 20+ year career as a coach.

  • MICHAEL Malthouse and Nathan Buckley will be back in tandem at Collingwood next year.
The reunion is believed to have been ratified at a club board meeting last night and announcements are expected in the next few days.
Malthouse's contract extension is likely to become public today, accompanied by a strong pointer to Buckley's imminent return.
Buckley, who turned 37 at the weekend, cleared the way for his return to Collingwood when he advised North Melbourne yesterday he wouldn't be filling the coaching vacancy at Arden St.

The expectation is the former champion will take over from the veteran coach at Lexus Centre after the 2011 season, but it is unclear whether that's guaranteed.

The agreement in principle is the result of months of planning and manoeuvring by Eddie McGuire's administration intended to keep Malthouse and to keep Buckley out of the clutches of other clubs.
As awkward as the arrangement could prove to be, that's what McGuire and others have been engineering since early this year.
It has just taken a lot longer than expected to deliver.
While Malthouse has been frustrated and angry with the long delay, he is believed to have accepted the notion of working with his former captain.
McGuire has been almost obsessive about his preferred succession plan, stoutly resisting pressure to reappoint Malthouse before securing Buckley.
Despite the widespread expectation of a Malthouse-Buckley reunion, Buckley and Richmond continue to talk as if he will participate in its coaching process.
He confirmed a meeting last night and said: "You go through the first step first and then you worry about the next step after that."
Buckley said he had been excited by what he saw from the Tigers in their win over Essendon on Sunday.

Richmond's head of football, Craig Cameron, said last night: "As far as I'm aware, we're still meeting with Nathan later in the week.

"We're expecting to have a chat with him to see if that's the path he wants to go down.

"There's no tokenism on our side."

Asked on radio if he had signed with Collingwood, Buckley said: "Obviously it's a consideration, it's an on-going process."

Sportingbet Australia has installed former Kangaroos star and current Sydney assistant John Longmire as the $3 favourite to take the top job at Arden St.

Caretaker coach Darren Crocker is the second favourite at $3.50 ahead of David King and Damien Hardwick (both $5).
