Buckley the Greatest says Malthouse

Can we just acknowledge that he is a champion of the game rather than worry about who is the greatest.

If MM said that he is the greatest, that's fine as its a matter of opinion. But to a degree, of course he was going to say that sitting right next to him during his retirement speech.

I really dont know what you are trying to achieve with this thread Yarra. It should be just a tribute day rather than a debate!

Mind your own business I will post what I want. It is a tribute, a tribute that Malthouse says Buckley is the greatest.

I dont know why people take these debates so seriously. We all apply a different agenda to asses the worth of players and that provides different outcomes as to who is the best.

Some are also just pig headed and wont acknowledge anything good about a player, especially a Collingwood player.

But I'm not one of those, Matthews is the best player I've seen, Keith Grieg possibly the second best, (Bucks would be in the same class as a keith Grieg, perhaps more determined). Carey was an undoubtable champion, so was Royce Hart, Ablett, Dunstall the list goes on. Who is better than the other is up to the individual to apply their own criteria. it makes their decision no less or more valid than other's.

But even in todays game, we have some outright champions like Brown, Judd, Kerr. And funnily enough when they retire, there will be some that deride them just because they are so small minded to see beyond their own prejudices.

Stupid argument...since when is team success a measure of how good an individual was.

There have been plenty of cases of duds playing in premierships and superstars/champions not winning a premiership

Bunton, Ablett, Skilton. Obviously not greats because none of them won flags.

And all better than Buckley

Yes, Ablett and Bunton 2 of the greats of the game, no disrespect to be ranked behind them. Most footballers are. Skilton never stood up in finals so we shouldn't rate him with the greats. He played only 1 elimination final. A true test of a champion is to stand up in finals, Skilton couldn't even get his team there.

Yeah well done mate. You started a thread that you knew would simply degenerate into slanging match with trolls that are simply looking for a cheap shot.

Interestingly Voss and Hird have also stated he is the best they played against. Bob Rose has says he is Collingwoods greatest footballer. Voss, Hird, Rose and Malthouse, gee the must all be delusional.

Wayne Carey has said on any number of occasions that Jason Dunstall is the greatest player that he has ever seen. He isn't but the point you are making is no different. Opinions are like ********s and you would expect Malthouse, Rose, McGuire and Co to wax lyrical about Buckley, especially today. It's all self-absorbed backslapping and bullshit anyway.

Hird, Carey and Voss are ahead of Buckley who is ahead of Riccuito and Archer.

Buckley is not the greatest ever. He isn't even the greatest of the last decade.

He didn't say you couldn't be a great without a premiership! He said you
couldn't be the greatest.

What is it about Buckley that inspires such schadenfreude? So many
people on here seem to derive such pleasure from his not getting a
premiership medal.

My own opinion: a great player, no question! But not THE greatest.

Correct saying: Opinions are like haemorrhoids. Sooner or later every
a$$hole gets one.

And obviously 10 times better than Harvey.

Harvey is a great player with different attributes and greater longtivity than Buckley We have had Lockett Stewie and the Doc all who are probably more talented than Harvey and Buckley. Harvey is a favourite with most St Kilda fans because he is the complete opposite of Kick it to me Figjam

Could anybody mount an arguement to say that Buckley is/was better than Carey? In the past 35 years (back to early 70's) Buckley might get a gig on the half forward flank in the greatest team of that era. I reckon he might be in the top 20. Definately not top 10.

no one can take away the fact that buckley is a champion, no matter if he won premierships or not.

he was the only reason people went to watch collingwood during the late 90's when we were a rabble, he turned us around on the field and he will always be the greatest to many collingwood fans, people associated with the club etc.

this doesn't mean opposition supporters must agree just because malthouse said so.

and as the chick on SEN is in hysterics stating

"I was there! I saw Bux play".

:D

Dont worry about Rita she swallowed her baby whole and shes also the biggest piece of rubbish i have ever seen i think shes related to Joffa

But if you had to name a team of the century today, would he be in it?

Probably. And that says it all right there.

Possibly Buckley would make it, but he is not the greatest as Malthouse and others have stated.

To answer your qustion with an example, let's say you were picking an Australain Cricket team of the century: It's like saying that Greg Chappell, who would probably make that side, is the greatest. Now Chappell was a great player but he is miles behind Bradman, Warne, Ponting, Gilchrist, etc.

Likewise, Buckley is/was a great player. There are plenty in front of him though.

I don't believe that Buckley was the greatest ever. I do not believe he was the greatest of his own era. That said, I tried to move from this line of logic and tried to put his career into perspective, and being named as part of the best team ever (so he is one of the top 25 or so) shows how good he has been.
