Buckley the Greatest says Malthouse

Great player but... He made his mind up on Wednesday do you think he was waiting to see if Judd was going to collingwood. If he did i think he would of played on.

Irrespective of whether he was the greatest, what is clear is that Bucks played through (and the subject of) the most hyperbole-ridden era the game has seen. For all I know he might be the greatest, but to have megaphone wielding media sycophants tell you that ad nauseum for season after season makes it difficult to soberly judge.

Very much like all the crap that surrounds Judd isn't it?

I dont know why people take these debates so seriously. We all apply a different agenda to asses the worth of players and that provides different outcomes as to who is the best.

Some are also just pig headed and wont acknowledge anything good about a player, especially a Collingwood player.

But I'm not one of those, Matthews is the best player I've seen, Keith Grieg possibly the second best, (Bucks would be in the same class as a keith Grieg, perhaps more determined). Carey was an undoubtable champion, so was Royce Hart, Ablett, Dunstall the list goes on. Who is better than the other is up to the individual to apply their own criteria. it makes their decision no less or more valid than other's.

But even in todays game, we have some outright champions like Brown, Judd, Kerr. And funnily enough when they retire, there will be some that deride them just because they are so small minded to see beyond their own prejudices.

Good post

Haydn Bunton Snr is the greatest of all time .....3 Brownlows & 3 Sandovers ...seriously it is not even close.

The rest is debatable.

Personally if you are talking last 30 years ....Matthews and Carey - stand out to me.

Then there is a plethora of champions - Buckley is amongst those.

Ironically Bunton ,Carey and Bucks all from non-footballing states.

haha oh yeah I'm the only person to ever exaggerate in their user name..
But back to the point, Voss and Hird themselves have played in Buckley's era, and have been better than him. Not to mention those of even greater status, Carey, Matthews and Ablett Snr. You think Voss and Hird are going to name themselves? They are honouring a man retiring who has been a great footballer. You cannot say Buckley has been a better footballer than Carey, Matthews and Ablett Snr, and that is if you first ignore the fact that he isn't as good as Hird or Voss to start with.

Please tell me why Buckley continually dated Voss every time they played one on one. The true way to judge footballers is when they are matched against each other. Buckley had it over Voss every time they were matched up. The stats are compelling in Buckleys favour including tackles, shepherda and HARD BALL gets.

Fair enough, now compare him to Hird and prove that he was a better footballer :) Oh and just so you know, IF you successfully do that, you only have Ablett Snr, Carey & Matthews to compare him to before he can be amongst the best of the past 35 years.

Hird- The two of them rarely played on each other. Hird often going forward against Collingwood. The few times thast Buckley played directly on Hird, Buckley had the better of Hird. Unfortunately Hird often had the better of Collingwood but not when he was matched one on one against Buckley. Hird enjoyed more success against the Pies when playing forward away from Buckley.

Ablett- Only won 1 club best and fairest- enough said

Carey- Buckley enjoyed great success against Carey when Buckley matched up on him at CHB a few times in the late 90s. Yes a midfielder like Buckley playing on the great Carey and beating him. In one of those games Carey had 2 goals at quarter time, Buckley went on him and kept him to one for the remainder of the game while picking up 27 possessions and kicking a goal himself.

Matthews- I believe is the greatest footballer to ever play the game. A different era to Buckley so he can't be compared.

didn't malthouse say the best from up close, meaning who he had played and coached? look it is all a matter of opinion isn't it. If Malthouse thinks it then all the power to him

Hird was dominant against Collingwood numerous times. If Buckley was better than Hird why would he not try to quell the man who was singlehandedly winning the match? Hird was clearly better than Buckley, even non-Essendon supporters agree.

yet you compare the 1929 pies with modern day premiership teams.

Michael Voss and Andrew Macleod don't agree, but of course us supporters know better.

Where did Hird say this? Where did Voss say it? Plus as I said to you in another thread, if Hird said he was the best he'd played o it doesn't make him better than Hird, as Jimmy can't play on himself.

We all know it goes,
Hird, Voss>Buckley, not by much but they are better.

Ummm..."we all" would be Essendon supporters?

Cause the rest have it a little differently - sorry but I have both Harvey AND Buckley ahead of Hird who was no doubt a match winner but ultimately broke down to often and didnt deliver week in week out anywhere near the constsitency of the others.

IF we are talking consistent output at the highest level - IMO no one gets near Harvey and if you dont believe it go back and have a look at his stats from 97/98.....freak.........and still out of all these superstars THE ONLY ONE still going strong.

But there can...be only 1......Banger.:D:thumbsu:

Scott West is still going strong and gets better with age. But of course we'll ignore that.

Agreed, Buckley and Harvey were far more consistent over their careers than Hird.
