Thought it woul be a tough ask to knock off the Jackers yesterday, but didn't expect us to fold like a card table after 3/4 time. Whilst we trailed by 26 points, the weather turned nasty and we were hoping for a change in direction. The only direction which followed was the ball - straight towards the AJAX goalsquare as they piled on 7 unanswered including a couple of ridiculous long bombs.

Apparently last season they sat 7-2 before losing 6 key players to the Maccabi Games and backpacking thereafter. I daresay they will play finals and should give Caulfield and Beaumaris a shake.

Time to regroup for a trip to Sunbury.

First up, Caulfields reserves are the best side we have played against as a club, they were most impressive.
Now to the senior game, Ruppppo were level at the 18min mark of the last quarter , the weather changed dropped 10 degrees it started to rain and a wind was clearly favoring the end Caulfield were kicking to. They preceded to kick 4 unanswered goals against the flow. We were seriously competitive, they were very classy and an extremely impressive unit, but at no stage did i think we could not win this game. The luck was definitely with the Caulfield team in more ways than just the scoreboard. We have come away from the game confident we can be competitive as the season moves forward.

Decided to take the road trip out to nice old Sunbury yesterday and once through the massive accident at the round about entrance saw a good contest.

Was a tough running game all day and forwards seem to struggle apart from Slevison & Brennan at each end. Both sides had periods where they dominated play, however the class of Caulfield late in the 2nd & 4th qtrs was the difference.

Rupertswood are a good run and carry side, they pressured very well. However King brown would have to agree with the Octopus & RMH that wind had nothing to do with it. Just a side who were not playing their best footy doing what they had to do to win, when the game was there to be won Caulfield had that bit of extra class.

Rupo's reserves were terrible, with what seemed very little depth. Rupo would want to stay injury free. Caulfield the total opposite. Looking at a bit of the second half they would push some other club senior sides, clearly a lot of depth down at Glenhuntly.

All results seemd to go to script and I would think alot tipping 5 from 5 this week.

Pakdale seem clear last at present and top sides look like Beauy, Caulfield & Ajax (with some big name players back).

For the third time i was not blaming the wind which was probably going more across the ground, nor am i blaming the luck that i think they had IMO, there luck had nothing to do with the weather. Bottom line they were too good, but we were very competitive.
The home ground advantage has been good over the years but our last two games last year resulted in a 1 point win over Whitefriars and a loss to Werribee, so i doubt it is as big now.

I pointed out there reserves were possibly as good a reserves amateur team i have seen. We were horrible. There were players in our reserves yesterday that will have a big impact in our seniors as the year goes on. Work it out for yourselves. We actually have over 30 players who could acquit themselves to senior footy pretty well. To me it looked like Caulfied has 40 odd.

The 4 unanswered goals came after we dominated both the last 15minutes of the third qrt and the first 15minutes of the last quarter that's why i suggested it was against the flow. They are a class act and it is great to allow our players to step up to this next level.

KB with mention of an apparent lack of depth has the decision to forego your two U19 sides (with 1 of those playing in the top division) in favour of just one U18 side been re-considered? I understand that the U18 comp is still developing and I mean no disrespect but the standard at this stage is pretty average. Would an U19 side playing in North 1 have been a better option?

just a shout out to all the camberwell boys, good to hear the sledging towards rob "cant even get a game in the sandy twos" cathcart. very humorous stuff...43 possesions and a goal later, stick that one up ya

I would suggest the club will stick with U18's. We had a great day Saturday with all three teams playing at home. We always had issues with numbers under the other system and alot of players were over u19 footy by the time they were in there last year. We also had the issue of many younger players ready for senior footy. Unfortunately our depth has been decimated by many players who played reserves and some U19 players have gone to other clubs for various reasons. The bigger shame is some of them are much fitter than they ever were at Rupppo and playing some good footy. Some of them enjoy a beer watching the seniors.

Bedford our rooms are the same, (there is an egg & bacon roll for early arrivals at 3.50), now i do know how good Ormond reserves have been over the years, (i have been reminded) so if i was tipping i will call it a draw. Good Luck!!!!!!

Pretty sure 43 possessions in C grade still doesn't mean you can get a game in sandy twos......but sounds like he had a good game

From my perspective I thought Ruppo had their chances on the weekend and didn't make the most of them. Saying that when the game needed to be won Caulfield stepped up, although in my opinion they need to pull their finger out as they should be doing better.

This Week:

Beaumaris vs Parkdale - How far the Sharks this week! This will get ugly.
Mazenod vs Old Camberwell - The Nodders will roll on against the Wellers pretty easily at home.
Old Geelong vs Ajax - The Jackas are flying and will love the space of Como Park. They'll do it easy.
Caulfield vs Ormond - This will be the closest game of the week and as neither team has hit their straps, I'll go with the Fields at home.
Ruppertswood vs Fitzroy - Ruppo will bounce back at home against a struggling Fitzroy.

I know it is early and maybe a touch unfair, but can anyone see Parkdale staying up? They don't appear to be the Vultures of old.

KB,

The reserves side looks a shadow compared to past years and it doesn't surprise me that they copped a hiding. Depth is definitely a concern.

Robbo
The scary thing is that our reserves side, beaten by 100 pts by Caulfield, would have beaten the side we put on the field against Parkdale last week by 100 pts.

Spot on with those tips Keano. Lock em in for me too. No, I can't see the Vultures getting out of it and predicted them to go down b4 season. Having said that they looked ok in patches in Round 1 but didn't have the pace, skill or fitness to go with a young Rupo side as the game went on.

If they get more match fitness into some of their blokes and the weather gets ordinary, they'll win games (especially at home). Be interested to hear what others think or whether key personnel are missing but if the Vultures now cop a couple of hidings (Beauy & Fields) after losing R1 & 2, building the confidence & momentum to survive will be very difficult.

Disappointing MHS are uncompetitive in B section. Fancy losing by that margin to the Oakers. WTF? It's ancient history now but Caulfield and 3 or 4 others in C would definitely have made a better fist of it.

Everything Keano is saying seems to be spot on.

Tips rd 3:
Beaumaris
Mazenod
Ajax
Caulfield
Rupertswood

Smoker, MHS although terrific last year when it mattered were always going to struggle up in B grade. McIntrye retired (best ruckman in the VAFA) and it seems White not been playing doesnt help. However current scores seem to be amazingingly bad. Worse than one thought. Oakleigh a good side, but 25 goals shows how much MHS are battling. A clear straight back down to C grade.

Seem the Vultures are the same from their performaces (going down). A parkdale report on why would be helpful. Old Camberwell seem to be struggling also, but they have played Caulfield & Beauy first up. Tim Maher (OC) seems to be a late report against the goal machine Slevison. Doesnt look good, any knowledge of what happened there?

That flag was the last game for a few MHSOB legends and they performed brilliantly to win it. Their reserves have been rubbish for a decade. This should be no suprise. I wouldn't be suprised if they did the double drop!

I hear Maher is in trouble as the game was taped (by the ammos) and the incident was on it. I didn't see it, but I believe its pretty a pretty straight forward case.

I think you are being rather generous with that assessment!
