Brian Speaking,

With your in depth knowledge of the VAFA I would like to know your thoughts on the Fitzroy Reds and where you think they will finish next season.

Cheers :)

Cave my friend,
The C Section top 4 beckons for the boys formerly of the varsity. With the sides relegated from B in 05 perceived to be 'fragile' and in danger of a long hiatus in Crunch Section, expect to see the the Lions rattle the wins off in 06 as they push for a berth in B Section in 07.
Momentum is everything and the Reds have PALENTY.

Sounds good mate. Finals would be great. Do you think they need to get many recruits for C grade? Sorry if these seem like silly questions but I am new to the VAFA and I am trying to learn as much as possible. :thumbsu:

Cave, the standard around the VAFA is to add 6 or 7 better players than you had in the grade below to be competive.
In 1997 in B Section, SKOB could not get anywhere near Old Brighton. Over the pre season of 98, we added 13 players into the rounds one side in A Section, and in the early rounds of that season beat Brighton, who had the same cattle, by over 100 points. They were relegated that season, we finished 5th.

Thanks for the example mate. This gives me abit of an idea. Does anyone have any news on Fitzroys recruiting for next season? Hopefully Kane Maghamez will play the whole season! :)

Yeah im the one talking bull********. Sam Ansty a bloke that has accumulated 5 bests in 05' in the VFL, whos in the prime of his footy career couldnt towel up a bunch of has beens in the VAFA, youve got to be kidding, im not pumping the tires, B section is a massive step up from C section and i think the tigers will make the downstep well, just my opinion. Jurika, two listen trophys...hmmmmmm i feel a fair hint of jealousy in ur words, maybe they are threatening your spot brian?

Excuse my ignorance FF007 but, if Anstey "accumulated 5 bests in '05" and "is in the prime of his football career" then why is he no longer playing for Frankston and why is he going to lace up the boots in C Grade against all those aforementioned "has-beens"?

Seems rather strange to me....

Pretty simple Scribe, he teaches at St Bedes, is great mates with Juice, plough and the wintles. Just wants to play with mates, Frangas loss, they wanted him back dearly. I accept your opinion Brian, i hope he prooves you wrong for the tigers sake, i must have seen stuff you havnt. I think jurika will play, he owes OX down there.

Sammy is certainly a good guy and a good footballer.

He seemed to lose the pasion about halfway through the year and didn't do much after that.

Probably still carrying an injury but should be good at that level.

Frankston did make one phone call to find out what he was doing, and let him go with their best wishes. Would be welcome back anytime, but the way the list is taking shape for 06 down at Frankston, it is unlikley he would be in the best 22 in any event.

A really likeable guy, and hope he doesn't drop his standard as there is certainly a big drop from VFL to C Grade VAFA.

all the talk seems to be centered around this Anstey bloke and the inclusions that are going down to the tigers. but what about the departures? i read in the local rag that beveridge is saying they will be losing a few blokes overseas with aaron connelly and paul groves. i know aaron will be a major loss for the side as he is a very versatile player, however i dont know much about the other bloke paul groves? does anyone know anything about him? will he be missed by the side?

Groves is moving to a side in Germany called the Munich Kangaroo's, won the German AFL premiership last year :D

Hes a quick winger (was an athletics champion) he is a hot and cold sort of player, but on his day can be quite damaging. Aaron Connoly will be a loss, but i think a few U/19 blokes will step up in his place. Another inclusion to the side is the older brother of Scafidi, former Port Melbourne VFL player.

The VAFA fixtures for 2006 have just been released: First round for C grade is:
Monash Blues vs Old Camberwell
NOB's vs Ormond
Old Paradians vs Hampton Rovers
Fitzroy Reds vs St Bedes Mentone
Parkdale Vultures vs AJAX

Belter - if it weren't for me playing myself, I'd travel to Brunswick St Oval to watch Sam Anstey take on all of the Fitzroy Reds team himself. My money's on Anstey, apparently he's be the best player the Ammos have ever seen.

Mate I will be there and it will be great to see the Reds unfurl their flag against the Tigers. Will be a great test for the Reds. :)

That would have been funny Brian, had scribe not used that joke only an hour ago. Please find some new material.

Scribe, I cannot deduce from your syntax whether you are playing against yourself or playing with yourself.

The good people at the Reds better get a flagpole installed at Brunswick Street then Caveman. If they don't, they will have to resort to just having a bunch of kids standing in the middle of the ground flapping the flag up and down like they do at half time in the A-League :D

Do the 2s get to unfurls theirs too I wonder ?

Eddie - nice one!:D
Fair call - that description was a touch ambiguous.

Now that the fixtures are out, and to avoid any confusion, I will hopefully be charging up and down the tennis court wing at Bulleen against Old Haileybury, and trying to steer clear of the defensive "hole" (where an unsuspecting small defender is likely get poleaxed by The Foo!!). Would prefer to meet up with him at the canteen if possible.

Thanks to several contributors on this forum, I'll have a some new sledge material to try out when Big Chris lines up for goal too!

Not that I know of mate. We have had a fair whack of players come to training so far, but as with other years, the coaching staff at the Reds tend to just keep a lid on things.

From what I could see, training has just been a good excuse to get together and have a kick and catch up so far. Many a team has fallen short after going too hard too early. It was only 10 weeks ago that we won 2 flags, I think the boys are happy to celebrate that for another few weeks :D February or March should give us a better look at things.

The legendary Bill Atherton was able to get a flag pole to Brunswick Street for the first round in 2002 after the 2001 D3 premiership, but I can't recall if we had one at Arden Street for the 2003 flag. If we can't a flag pole to the ground, it will have to be hung from the electrical wires outside of the Lord Newry, next to the footy boots.

Let's go one further and hang it from the Town Hall !! :thumbsu:

All of those guys played in A Section except Ukovic who could not get re-instated.
McKee good, Ryan injured, Daffy same, Roach very good.
