Roast Can anybody explain what benefits Danyle Pearce brings to the team?

One thing I really noticed on Saturday is that he holds the ball for too long too often. Noticed at least 5 passages where he didn't with the first natural option and held us up, or ran wide with the ball enabling Saints defenders time to structure.

D. Pearce is awesome. Every time he gets a handball gifted early in a game, he looks like Dr. Frankenstein's monster. Stiff arms outstretched. The inevitable fumble. The constant leaning over to retrieve said dropped ball. And the subsequent up-and-under kick that any under 12 kid practices with gusto at every training session.

He has no concept of "one touch" and should be immediately delisted in favour of anyone out there who can hold a burrito without dropping the thing.

I love this thread. No matter what Danyle does in a game, he will always be lambasted for his errors. He was better than most this round, he was better than most against Richmond, GWS and Adelaide. His workrate is better than almost everyone playing at the moment, something that most people don't seem to recognise. He'll continue to be an integral part of our team for the next 2 years. And this thread will continue to thrive.

As for the length of contract, maybe taking 2 years meant that they could more evenly distribute his wages. We know he's not on big money but contract management isn't just about dollars. Currently, he is a better player than anyone we would be picking up in the draft either this year or next (at the depth of pick we would be taking if he was cut as well as everyone else that people want cut).

Like the whole team, he is not playing great at the moment, but he has proven to be a consistent performer for our best 22.

And all this time I thought our contracting him for two more years was purely a clever cover up to get him to a hundred games and poach his son/s from Port (I would like that - still haven't forgotten the J Carr crap).

Well that may come into it too. Great innovating Bondy.

Pearce is a good player and doesn't deserve some of the wrath he gets on here but in the scheme of what is now a rebuild, he really doesn't offer us what we need, even as a depth player (and depth for two years, again what were they thinking?? Even S.Mitchell is on yearly contracts).

I will never falter his work rate. It's first class. What I will falter however is his disposal and decision making. He constantly chooses the wrong option, and often does either hospital handpasses or handpasses to a stagnant player. That is literally U12's stuff that coaches will harshly grill you for in 16's, colts and beyond. If I'm going to be honest, D.Pearce would be an exceptional player if we had a forward line of the Eagles, Sydney or the Hawks. His bomb long worked when Pav and Mayne were marking most and Ballas and SonSon were crumbing the rest. Maynes deteriorated, Pavs trying but a shadow of the jet he was, Ballas and Walters are up the field. He now does not bring anything to the team. The outside run and work rate he brings (which I've stated, is first class) can be replaced, most probably by Sutcliffe. I've said it about 1000 times on this friggin board but Sutty is not a defender, he needs to be given Pearces role and D.Pearce needs to be phased out.

As for your second point, he WAS an integral part in our team. He probably was a main driving force behind us reaching the grand final in 2013 and successive finals campaigns in the last 2 years. The problem is he's been found out, his role has been negated and he hasn't decided to learn new tricks. Look at Walters and Ballas, they've found out they can't stay close to goal so sometimes they're in the back pocket setting it up. I have nothing but respect for Pearce, but if he is still apart of our team in 2 years then we have failed the rebuild. In the same vein of if Mzungu, Suban, C.Pearce, Mayne and Z.Clarke are still apart of our team in 2 years, it means we've not addressed what our issue is. Our foot soldiers were loyal servants and don't deserve most of the criticism they get here but 2013 has been and gone. Like it or not, we're not a top 4 team now, we can be in 3 years if we do this thing right. Allowing D.Pearce to toil away with a role that no longer exists, which isn't fair to him or the team.

The ONLY way I suggest he gets a game next year is if (and a gigantic IF) we nab both Hogan and McCarthy. Then his worthwhile will be vital. But we won't. We won't have that contested marking beast that can crumb his own ball. That's the only way he should be allowed to stay in. He does 1 lace out pass into the 50 a game, we could train a plethora of youngsters to at least achieve that.

Danyle Pearce, much like guys such as Suban, Clarke, Sylvia, Ballentyne is someone that on paper looks great - Great Pace, Clean Hands, Good Footskills, Goal Scoring and Vision but when it comes to actually playing everything seems to disappear.

He'll fumble the ball and trip over himself or he'll inexplicitly rush himself when he's got time and space, only to be obliviously unaware moments later. Aside from that his kicking seems to always miss targets, especially when we have guys downfield in the clear - presuming he actually sees them. And his goal kicking? Unless it's 55-60 out on the most obscene angle that'll make Eddie Betts would think twice on, then you'll back him to miss or better yet kick it OoB.

Look, I'm not saying he doesn't have a role in this team - his best is great and help Hilly but at this stage if he can't keep it at a consistent level then I can't see him getting a game next year when Bennell take his spot in the team.

He is not having a great year. Having said that, a 2 year deal is not a good or bad decision and time will tell. I will make my judgement some time next year.
