Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

Sacchi didn't build AC Milan. Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini were already there before Sacchi stepped foot in the San Siro.
The Italians were there, he brought Van Basten, Gullit and then Rijkaard the next year I think, also brought in Ancelloti around that time. He was a massive part of that era, his gamestyle was different as well it was ruthless he always wanted more goals. I wish I was old enough to live through that era, I've still had amazing teams to watch with late 90s and early to mid 2000s, and the current team is full of young talent and making us proud. ❤️🖤

Building through the draft.
Clarko says NO
EdR7kJQU4AA03bj
That's when Clarko became a Tyrant like Putin lol

From what angry ant has said in the past once he stops coaching the Hawks he doesn’t get another gig elsewhere ..... that’s passion!
.... And then Clarkson coaches north Melbourne lol
Excellent
Yep... Once Clarkson refused the draft, Clarkson went full Vladimir Putin lol

If by winning only 3 finals from your last 12 finals since 2012 and no Premierships to show, then I’m totally with you.
Hawks had an ageing squad in 2019/20.

Then posters like you bash the cats for having an ageing squad.

Cats won the flag in 2022 with ex hawks Isaac Smith

Keep premiership coaches until the end of time? Parkin should still be coaching us to this day?

Point is even the super coaches over history can’t polish a turd. Barsssi at Melbourne in the 80s, Alan jeans Richmond in 92, Blight at st kilda, malthouse for Carlton etc.

Essendon supporters will tell you sheedy from around 2003 onwards was doing a similar variation of what Clarko is doing now.
You know what?

Your post stood out.

Ron Barrassi coaching era at the demons from 1981 until 1985 will be looked back mostly as a bad period, but it was an important period for the demons.

Demon's won like 35 games in 5 years. They won only one game in 1981 or 1982.

Saying that, some of those blokes that started their career under Barrassi from 1981-85, played a role in the demons 1987 preliminary final side and 1988 grand finals side.

maybe. at least we don't cheat by using performance enhancing drugs. that's a fact, not a humble opinion.
Nope but you did win a few flags and went over the salary cap in 1986, 1988, 1989 and 1991.

Ironic as hawks fans bagged out Carlton fans for winning the flag in 1995 by going over the cap . LoL

Don Scott admitted that only because all the main board members from that era are all passed away LoL

Northern clubs are shameless about the academy rort - your post is an example
But you had no issues with the swans struggling in the 1970s , the 1980s and early 1990s when your team was winning flags.

Hawks had the best recruiting zones in the 1970s and 1980s while swans had next to nothing.

Birchall, Crawford, Croad, Ellis, Franklin, Lewis, Roughead, Rioli, Hodge, Ladson, Schoenmakers, Smith, Bailey. 8 AAs in that list. Handy.

From memory Burgoyne, Hale, McEvoy, Frawley were first round picks once upon a time but traded players cost what they cost at the time. I think our drafted first round picks in 2018 was 5 (6 if you count Shuey) plus 2 traded in.

Because those clubs aren't good at... anything?

Did Sydney's 2012-14 side come via the draft? They traded for Mattner, Shaw, Richards, Mumford, Kennedy, Morton, McGlynn but also gave up very little. Added Tippett and Franklin for only cap space and haven't won since. Drafted Mitchell (FS), Parker, Hannebery, Rohan (1st), Jetta (1st), Reid, McVeigh (1st), Malceski, Goodes, O'Keefe etc.

No team has really succeeded via the Boston Celtics 2008 path in the AFL since the draft took hold. Hence the thread. The probability of drafting a top player with an early pick is higher compared to a late one, everyone knows that. But it's not an exact science. Jack Watts 1, Michael Walters 53. But it's not feasible to trade in established stars each year. Clubs don't have the trade currency or the cap space. Draftees are a free hit. Cost nothing (draft picks are free) and only take up a list spot for two years at $100k.
NBA is a totally different animal.

Go back the 1996 NBA draft that had Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash etc.

Iverson was pick 1 and his contract was 3 years at 5-6 million a year. 1st round picks or picks 1-30 in the NBA are given 3 year deals.

Picks 31-60 are given 2 year deals. Pick 60 was given 2 year deal at $500,000 a year

Shaping up as a disaster.

It’s bad enough that us big 4 clubs have to pump up the North Melbourne’s of the world, history suggests the Hawks will follow suit with a few lean years. Dangerous territory.
How dare you trash North and smear poo on North Melbournes name lol.

North Melbourne have saved the AFL from being broke by getting 10-15,000 at home games in Docklands lol

Bumping 3 year old posts, when every man and their dog knows that Clarkson’s top ups didn’t work and he got moved on. Not only that the hawks went back to the draft in 2019 and are now rebuilding with a new coach.

This is one of the strangest bumpathons I’ve seen.
And it only took Hawks fans 3 years longer than the rest of us to catch on.

We said it was worth a try, and still think it was. The thread started by some saying hawks should clear out all players with currency and go heavily to the draft. ‘Three years on’ now being accused of cutting too deep and cheating
So the number 1 pick in the potential spoon year is Harley reid three years ago Matt Rowell. How’s the suns tracking?

Try reading the thread. Hawks fans were chest beating about how they wouldn't drop and anyone who said otherwise was an idiot.

But congrats for still doing exactly what Hawks fans were doing 2 years ago and pointing to a pick or team in isolation and pretending its proof you dont need high picks. High picks don't automatically mean success, but you can't have success without it unless your Geelong.

Not all of us were “chest beating”..even when we finished top 4 in 2018 I could tell exactly where we were at.

You were talking about us rebuilding in the midst of our 3pete. If u keep saying the samething for a long period of time eventually u will be right broken clock and all that. Its sad the amount of years you have waited to finally be vindicated
