Can we talk about the captaincy?

You seriously think having half the side at 30 or over isn't an issue? Petracca was looking at Selwood with contempt when he was running past him. It's a massive factor.

I think its a long term factor (will be as we transition the list) but in that game no it wasnt a factor imo. Our flawed gameplan and shoddy attack on the footy were the key factors.

Reminded me of Bartel’s last year, looked like a witch’s hat
Yeah for sure. The way they just burned him off was stark. But at least he chased and didn't give up, like most of his teammates. It's just that his body couldn't do it anymore. He was never blessed with lightning speed anyway, but it was good enough to get by.

Selwood is old and battered, and well past his best footy, and I’m sure Petracca, who is at the peak of his career, easily and cheerfully ran any from him, and knew he wouldn't be troubled. Nonetheless, at this point in their careers, Selwood has three flags. Petracca has nothing. And I’d be surprised if Petracca, who seems like a decent young chap, doesn’t in fact feel envious rather than contemptuous of Selwood.

No one’s saying Petracca has no respect for what Selwood has achieved. We are merely commenting on the manner in which he was able to run around and brush Selwood aside. It was an act of a player that knew he had the others measure. In spades.

Reminded me of the manner in which we eventually treated Brisbane after they’d beaten us up for years. The wheel turns. And stops for no one. Including Joel.

Selwood has never backed down.

Its all perspective. People wished we could be the unsociable Hawks.... and then when they get it with Selwood they complain about it.
Sounds about right for here.

Selwood plays next year as Captain in his final year.

He's earned that.

With that said the expectation that he's the #1 MF is outdated. He's the 4th best MF we have. Others must take the load now.

GO Catters

Of course it was as you have described (although am pretty sure that a few of the posts did suggest a lack of ‘respect‘) but it’s not hard to temper the bitterness and keep a bit of balance.
Yes it’s a changing of the guards, as it should be. Joel has had a lot of fun. It’s time, and it’s fine to give someone else a go!

As the longest-serving captain in Geelong Cats history, Selwood is just three games shy of breaking Stephen Kernahan’s all-time league record of 226 games as captain.

He says he’s not ready to take his hand off the tiller just yet.

“Understanding the club and being there for a long time, I probably know where the club is at more than people on the outside that have their opinions too,” Selwood says.

“There will be a time (to pass on the captaincy), not sure it's now.”

Don't know about you, but I found this all a bit cryptic from Joel. What's he mean about where the club is at? He sounds more and more like CS every year! Don't ask questions. We know a lot better than you outsiders do.. Yadda yadda. Where's he at? is more to the point. Does he still have it in him to go full tilt at another preseason, another full season with the captaincy? If it's not this year, then I can't imagine he will be handing over anything. He will surely be calling time on his stellar career. Let's hope with a premiership medallion.

With soon to be 34 year old midfielders, you are correct. I have little to no faith.
Harsh from the pear tree man.
I would have thought Joel still gives more than his alternatives, has given more to this club than any captain since Polly, maybe any captain, is our best representative across sectors, our character before talent leader and literally bleeds for the place
He was better than most of our ageing parade in 2021 and is heading toward longest serving skipper in history.
Apart from this, he's ok I guess.
I understand the sentiment of move em on before it's too late, but not Joel.
Get a younger crew around him and he'll flourish.
He'll aid with Stephens and the younger guys to assist with the evolution
Hopefully we trade up for a starter next season like a sonsie or wanganeen etc to assist his handover in the midfield
Our golden skipper surges forward

Should have retired after our gf loss, it was known to immediate close contacts outside of the MC circle that he was banged up and spent after that season. Unfortunately he finished off the same way after this yrs pre-lim. I fear for him another yr older. Stewy is our immediate choice after Joel, Caught in no mans land after that. Might as well draft our next captain....

If we are going full tilt for another top 4 finish as seems to be the messaging from the club post prelim loss, I think we should implement a policy where all players over the age of 30 are rested for a minimum of 4 H&A games during the season.

Perhaps exceptions could be made for the ultra durable like Blicavs and Duncan if their form warrants it.

I think Selwood could potentially have a really good 15-17 game season in him. It's hard to see that he has a 22 game + finals season left in the tank.

Sel's final season as Captain, and then handover to Stewart when he inevitably retires at the end of next year. Goes out on his terms, and Stewart leads the refresh for the next generation

A fitting end IMO, and makes the most sense

Not sure Joel even sees next season as being his last, so there's no way he would have been contemplating retirement after last years gf:

They'll never do it. Not sure you can have part time footballers either.

It's also hilarious mentioning Blicavs and form in the same sentence. As long as Scott is breathing he's cemented into the team no matter what. Not going to change now.

1st, 6th, N/A, 1st, 5th, 3rd, 6th.

Hardly hilarious to raise Blicavs who has missed the top 10 once in 7 seasons and the top 5 only twice in our best and fairest.

Any chance he can turn that into one good finals game?
It is such a lame as **** retort tbh.

That fits the bill for 20+ players and 5+ coaches at the club every year yet we aren’t going to go baby and bathwater.

Accept reality that MB is a very good footballer.

He is the worst finals performer I have ever seen in my whole life.
No exaggeration. Worse than Rohan. Worse than Davis.
Maybe you or someone else can think of one, but I've never seen one as consistently poor.
Had some decent H&A seasons but finals matter the most.
