Why Cats skipper Selwood could be “embarking on a tough time”
He has now completed 15 seasons at the top.

I laughed at how Leigh Matthews refers to Joel as a "smaller version of Michael Voss". Joel's 184cm, Vossy 183cm. Can only imagine he was speaking euphemistically. Matthews still has it in for anything Geelong. Why Cats skipper Selwood could be “embarking on a tough time”

Well they both had knee issueOne of those situations I think were a player is perceived to be "bigger" than another when in reality there wasn't much difference.

And the common thread in all those losses is that we got run off our feet.I like this part...
Matthews also touched on Geelong’s much publicised list profile which could see a dozen players over the age of 30 playing on in 2022.
He feels the Cats would be well aware of their situation and the challenge is to somehow keep themselves competitive at the pointy end.
“Geelong has got an ageing list and they know that too,” he said.
“You can’t have 12 players playing at 35, can you?
“They’ve got to be careful though not to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Just because you have one bad game, just because it happens to be the last game of the year doesn’t mean you throw the baby out with the bathwater.
This part will get overlooked. It's not one bad game. We lost 4 out of our last 6, and were absolutely smashed in both finals losses. We also lost 2 out of the last 3 games at Geelong - the first time that's happened since 2002. That's a long long way from one bad game.
And no you can't have 12 players playing at 35, but we also showed fairly conclusively you can't have 11 players playing at 30 in a final either.

And not going to get any better.Hard to imagine at the end of a long and gruelling season, particularly when half your team is 30 or over.

The lack of overlap doesn’t help, but as you age, the first thing to go is speed, the second is running capacityYoung players get run off their feet too. The issue is the gameplan not the age of the list.

I feel for Joel.
He will take this whole situation the hardest out of all the players we've ever had. Deserved a lot better than this one dimensional coaching staff with inflated ego's.
Big change should have occurred after 2014. A waste of Selwood's prime years.

You seriously think having half the side at 30 or over isn't an issue? Petracca was looking at Selwood with contempt when he was running past him. It's a massive factor.
Petracca looking at Selwood with contempt...turn it up...
He’s not wrong. Left him in his dust. Joel looked very slow out there. Time has caught up with him.Petracca looking at Selwood with contempt...turn it up...
He’s not wrong look at how the whole Melb midfield treated Joel, they pushed him around and jerred and laughed at him ….they knew he was the weak link by physically getting into him and taunting himPetracca looking at Selwood with contempt...turn it up...
yes it was a point that's interesting was our team not going in to defend the skipper not matter what, this wouldn't have happened 10 years ago, so the question needs to be asked is there a morale problem, and was that altercation showing a symptom of the morale problem? He’s not wrong look at how the whole Melb midfield treated Joel, they pushed him around and jerred and laughed at him ….they knew he was the weak link by physically getting into him and taunting him
It’s been an issue for years and years that the team doesn’t defend any of our players when they are targeted…. You even see Hawkins and Co telling Joel to forget about it ect while the Melb players were being lippy and pushing himyes it was a point that's interesting was our team not going in to defend the skipper not matter what, this wouldn't have happened 10 years ago, so the question needs to be asked is there a morale problem, and was that altercation showing a symptom of the morale problem?
It does kill endurance, just the effect is not as dramatic as on speed and acceleration.Age kills speed yes but it doesnt kill endurance. The issue is our gameplan is physically to taxing to sustain all year imo and the lack of overlap run is a huge issue. This is not due to age but due to the types of players we select.
Reminded me of Bartel’s last year, looked like a witch’s hatHe’s not wrong. Left him in his dust. Joel looked very slow out there. Time has caught up with him.
