Charlie on afl tonight fox all but laughing at the "can Charlie and Harry co-exist up forward".

"If you look at his stats, they are elite. He draws defences up the ground, he rips back, he's extremely athletic- everyone in here knows how good he us".

If Charlie Curnow says all of that later tonight, then how do you already know about it?

Mate, I’ve got so many questions. 😳

Gary Lyon was excellent on the Couch. Not sooky at all and was able to detach himself from the club he supports.

Nathan Buckley was all about giving the dees excuses and Gary shut him down. I think that Nathan Buckley is losing the plot. He spent most of the season denouncing carlton along the lines of "the blues are only coming good because there is no pressure on them and they will falter again when pressure is applied". Even now any praise is begrudging.

I reckon Nathan's near on the worse pundit around.

I think there's quite a few effects going on with the commentary.

1. The broadcasters want them to be stars, because they employ them and can use them for cross promotion. They don't employ the players or coaches and can't really ask them for performances, but they can of the commentary.

2. Social Media emphasises moments, and commentators are trying to capture them. The problem being they are also trying to generate and replicate them, see BT's player nicknames.

3. The players who become commentators are a type, usually kind of macho lads. See Browny, Hodge, Richo. They fall into ribbing regularly, which is ok in patches but can be tiresome if it comes at expense of the call.

4. Non-players who commentate mostly come from the private school business set. Often means they let their biases shine through (particularly strange that they let Club Presidents commentate).

Personally think that the club bias commentary rules and that each club should have its own team. Neutral calls should remain of course on broadcast, but the option to listen to Andy Maher barracking is great

I think commentary as we know it will die out - it will “privatise” & you will be able to pick your preferred commentary thru subscription.
The “Blues call” with Andy Maher was brilliant - I’d happily pay a subscription fee to listen to that each week. Sponsorship wouldn’t be a problem - they would have companies lining up & would likely generate good revenue as the numbers pick up.
The rights would be an issue but that also evolves in time, delivering a custom user experience & having higher engagement would be attractive to the afl. TV & streaming rights are where the big dollars lay. Given SEN is in a whole lot of shit & losing money hand over fist it could lead to change.
Not saying it will happen next week - but is still a rapidly evolving environment & market.

Really? It may be painful…
I adore caro, admire kane's audacity, enjoy lloydy's waxen takes, hutchy's hunched grenade throwing & sam maclure's veiled carlton love
