Yes, I really hate it when expectations are set ridiculously high. Just want to win, by a non life shortening margin, and move on to ANZAC day.

Sam Pang has put Carlton winning down as a sure thing.

Stuff that. I am expecting a big win and am pumped for this game. This is the exact type of match we should win if we are serious this year.

Dennis Commetti just labelled us a premiership chance when giving his weekly tips. This is the exact type of game we've been dropping in the last few years, it's huge test of list maturity and ability to perform consistently over the next few weeks.

Way too soon for that, but as you say, if we start stringing together consistent performances, the lid will start wobbling.

Either we kick a cripple, foe or not, or we have a humiliating loss.

Hopefully Hird has the boys angry because if we get caught napping and let Carlton get the jump on us I wonder if with our fade outs we'll struggle to over come them.

Rain in the morning and later arvo too. If they come out the dog act we could be down a few. They have nothing to lose and would love to make an impact upon us that lasts next week as well.

That said:

1. Carlton doesn't run defensively
2. Essendon is very good at forcing a turn over
3. Essendon is moving the ball very well
4. Carlton have struggled to defend height
5. Liam Jones has an embarrassingly small tank
6. Daniher and Carlisle started to take a few marks last week
7. Carlton have struggled to kick a score
8. Essendon's backline is in supreme form.

Put 1,2,3,4,6 together is spells big score for the bombers.

5,7,8 says Carlton will struggle to score and whoever is on Liam Jones will most likely be able to get off him to support others and create. I am a little worried that if we send Fletch to him that Jones will get a free run at a number of marking contests. That said if Fletch can be used as the release kick from the backline it'll provide far more drive for us than whatever offensive opportunities Jones will provide them.

Carlton are going to have to rely on the embarrassment of the last few weeks to drive them to play angry. I don't think it'll work though as our boys have matched it with Sydney in the rain and the Hawks at the G.

Essendon just has to absorb the intense start that I assume they'll bring. We have the defence to cope. Once we force a turn over, as intensity doesn't improve skills, we should be able to hurt them the other way and utilise our towering KPFs. It won't take much to make them lose their confidence. Essendon by 30 points in this scenario.

If Essendon get the jump on them then it'll get very ugly. Essendon by 100 points in this scenario.

As supporters I think we can be as optimistic or pessimistic as we like. After the last 2 years, I think having plenty of optimism is a good thing. Hey were were up by 41 and 35 points respectively against last years grand finalists. Then you could also say we've had 2 very physical matches in the first 2 weeks and players could be sore.

But I'm not worried at all about Saturday. I'm going to enjoy beating the scum.

As supporters we can be as optimistic and pessimistic as we want for sure. We can also take it 25 weeks at a time as well!! It shits me when one supporter chastises another for not living up to a footy cliche. Those things about taking it a week at a time are all about players controlling what they can and focusing on one thing at a time so that they do that right.

My musings have zero effect on the way the team performs.

What everyone else is worried about is if you have a club culture that goes off too early. Yes Essendon is one of the club with that reputation, like Richmond. However, we should embrace that pre-mature lid blowing as part of our culture. The reason we are like this is because of the positivist message that Sheedy always sold us. It was infectious. Especially as he led us to finals in 23 of his 27 years here. Plus 12 times in the top 4, 7 grand finals and won the lot 4 times.

I grew up with that. I can not remember footy before Sheedy and I was a father of 3 in my 30s when he was sacked. So I don't give a **** Carlton if people smirk at me or Essendon fans in general for being this way. Bombers will go well this year. Tougher draw for Port and North and the great start by Essendon and Crows says that two powerhouses are replacing their annoying little rivals from the top 4. Well there's Freo too isn't there! Ok let me say that again. I think Hawks, Sydney and Freo will be top 3 while Essendon and Adelaide fight it out for 4th.

As long was we have a fair run with injuries I can see Essendon being a real contender next year. Especially if Essendon can lure Dangerfield for less than 750k.

I also think Essendon is poised to strike this year if we have ridiculously good luck and misfortune strikes enough of the top 3. Wouldn't that go down well on the HTB.

I hope the boys give some extra attention to Chris Judd if we are belting them. (nothing to serious just a few words here and there).
