Official Club Stuff CFC President thread - BREAKING: Luke Sayers steps down effective immediately

The constitution needs changing to separate years on the board of directors and years of presidency regardless of whether or not he himself will seek to change it.

Feels like Luke's gone before he's really gotten started.

This will not bode well for performance throughout the organisation.

What's the point?

How is it a curveball - our Board are a lot of things but they’re not idiots, each member of the Board and therefore the Board itself knows how long each member has been on the board and how many years they have left to serve - mandated time frames are a good thing otherwise you’d get dangerous situations where Presidents and board members start to treat the club as their own personal fiefdom- only need to look at 20 year Presidents like John Elliott and Eddie McGuire to see what damage they can cause after too long in the job.

We knew that at the end of 2021 when he came on board. We also knew Cook was only here for 3 years. I must say, things have been a little underwhelming. Proves you need more talent than just one man with a magic wand.

If sayers is leaving this is pathetic. In the club's hour of need, when it gets tough, the typical consultant, heads to the exit. It seems very convenient, to take on the Presidency, for 2 yrs, when there is a convenient exit door called governance at the first sign of underperformance. I suspect if we were in the top 4, the constitution would have been bent so Luke Sayers could enjoy the spoils. We effectively have a terminal President and CEO, and a coach requiring support. That is not a blue print for success

Not too sure about Cook as he is an employee (not a Board Member)
Oh okay, I thought he said he was only staying for 3 years then finding his successor but I hope your right and he stays on for longer, we need him!

I’m a little concerned for Vossy going forward. New president and if we do have a new ceo, his contract is up next season too I’m starting to get a little concerned for him, I feel he needs better coaching staff around him

No shit Tom Browne.

Nothing in this, nothing has changed, we knew this when he was appointed President it'd be a one term deal.

Weird that he brings it up now, as the carlton fanbase is imploding... huh

Are you Tom Browne?

That would explain a lot actually.

How can it be a convenient exit door when it’s clearly mandated in the club constitution and has been so for a number of years?

If it could be conveniently changed then you’d get a Hawthorn situation where Jeff Kennett made two comebacks.

Sayers has been on the Board for 12 years and stepped up at the time his commitments to his job at PWC finished- I am sure there will be an orderly transition and a search perhaps externally for another candidate- and that’s another issue for debate the Independent Selection Committee which was introduced by previous president Logudice which vet’s potential new board members - something that I’ve been critical of.

If Sayers only had 2 yrs, he should never have taken the Presidency, as a short term is not in the best interests of the club

Four years is heaps to put the finishing touches on the club…rebuild was complete, stacked for top end talent, commissioned a thorough review of footy department etc etc…

It’s now up to coach and playing group to work together to improve the on field.

Absolutely, you can encapsulate a 66 game reset in a 4 year term.

;)

I came into the School Council Presidency two years ago when my son started his secondary education. The previous Pres had been in the job for 9 years, they failed two consecutive governance quality examinations, and still they pushed her back into the job. I did two years in the job (voluntary) and passed it onto my VP as we had agreed, he'll do two terms and pass it to the incumbent VP. It keeps a fresh line of thought, new ideas, and the Principal on their toes.
Every board or committee of management I've ever been on (and there has been a few just quietly) I've resigned after three years.
We'll be right, surely the Carlton Board gig would be well sought after, might throw my hat in the ring.......

See to me like a really prohibitive rule, Sayers has done his time serving on the board, built his experience and seems decided he now had the time to commit to the position and gets 2.5 years.

Youre critical of Elliott and McGuire, I’m also critical of Elliott but Eddie at the Pies was there when the Pies made 5 grand finals and Elliott was at the helm for 5 as well.

Even just looking at Richmond, Oneale has been on the board for 18 years, 10 as President.

Doesnt. Are much sense to me

Despite the quality conversation and acknowledging that we knew this when it went down I do think it a tad silly that years as a director and years as president are combined .

From a purely political perspective it's like saying you can't forge a strong career in a party before becoming it's leader.

In my opinion there should be a cap on how long you can do each one that are not combined. Say two or three terms as each. This prevents McGuire type situations from occurring whilst allowing a performing president to have a "complete" run.

Changing organisational culture is not achieved overnight. If enough people feel that president is underperforming he wouldn't get re-elected (eg. Trump).

Here's hoping the club finds a capable replacement and we don't sink back to where we were 18 months ago with hostility destabilizing the club again

3 years and he said that when he first took the job. He's leaving after 2024.
