Na. He's a better player than Neale who still got his hands on it. Ablett would of got some touches but it wouldn't of saved us.

But you forgot Nat Fyfe, Matthew Pavlich, David Mundy, Matt Taberner, Lee Spurr, Stephen Hill, Hayden Ballantyne, Michael Walters, Clancee Pearce, Garrick Ibbotson, Jon Griffin, Lachie Weller and to a lesser extent Lachie Neale. See the problem?
The difference being the players I mentioned did not perform for round 1, or the second half of last year. So they have been not performing for a while.

If we were going to put a newbie on Ablett I reckon Grey would be our best bet. He shut Wingard down in Rnd23 last year and Wingard is a similar type of player to Ablett. Very skillful, very evasive.

Grey would love the challenge.
I don't think will be a good idea. Is like asking nyhuis to play on Peake.

Fair enough, you started by saying 'it's only Round 1 but ...' so I thought you were going on their Rnd 1 performance. I'd also add that the form of C Pearce, Pav, Tabs and especially Ballas wasn't great last year. The problem is you can't replace them all.

Injury aside, bloke has played one good game since 2014.

He's going to get 40 touches and kick a few goals either way, we might as well just ignore him and concentrate on shutting down the rest of them.

If KK (no idea how to spell his name) plays, we need to work on shutting his influence. Malceski could come good, spudded it up for a whole year. Hall is somehow doing a bit of damage.

Out Clancy In MJ
Out Barlow/Suban In Langdon
Out Clarke In Sandi
Out Griffen/Mzungu In Tucker

Clancy for MJ is an obvious one. We need some extra height in against Day, Lynch and Wright. MJ Hopefully will find touch straight away and give us some class off half back that we need.

I like Langdon over Barlow because I dont think Barlow fits into our team structure moving forward. Round 1 showed the importance of transition football and that stoppages are less important. Barlow was pushed out of the guts last year due to us having too many inside mids and with where the game is going i dont think we can afford to play another inside mid with a limited outside game. Plans for Barlow to rotate through the guts should be scrapped for Langdon who will give us genuine speed on transition. If Langdon is given the license to take the game on it excites me the speed he can give our side. That all said if we don't need Suban defensively, Suban should go out instead of Barlow.

Sandi for Clarke is another obvious one. I'm looking forward to our mids getting first use this week.

I like the idea of Tucker playing. I know he's not ready in the competitive stakes way of AFL but the Adelaide NAB challenge game proved he knows where to run to find the uncontested ball. I like the idea of Tucker getting that easy ball off half back compared to Clancy. I dont predict it working straight away but we need to take a chance and get a potential good ball user in our side. He either comes in for Mzungu or Griffin. Im not against the idea of only playing Sandi. Only playing one ruck should give us some extra run and other teams are doing it so why not us. Tabs should be able help out if need be.

In summary I'm all for speed and transitional movement off half back and through themiddle. If we are going to train all pre-season on skills and ball movement then we should pick a team to execute the way we want to play.

Like all those changes and the arguments behind them. for me if Pearce is ready bring him in for Griffin and Tucker for Mzungu. Playing Pearce, Taberner and Pav forward may be too tall a forward line with too little run but it might also work to have an extra option in there and we all know Pearce can play defense if need be. It'll also mean playing only one ruck but I can't see it working to play two rucks plus Pearce/Taberner/Pavlich.

Five changes aren't likely to be announced tomorrow but whatever the win-loss over the next 5-10 games it'd be great to see these guys getting chances.

Sandi is too old to spend 100% of the time in the ruck these days. Have to have at least one of Griffin, Clarke or Hannath in the side at all times.

To be honest I agree but it means one of them also have to work as a forward (or running) option and so far that's been very hit and miss. Pearce matches all but Clarke for height (and even there only gives away a few cm) and so although it might be too much at this stage maybe he's an option to contribute or at least provide cover at some point.

Either way I still feel like Pearce, Taberner, Pavlich, Sandilands plus a second ruck isn't the right mix and one needs to make way for an extra running player.

Regardless of how tall he is, Pearce is not a ruckman and has never played or trained as a ruckman.

Team line up for Round 2.

In - A.Pearce, Langdon, Sandilands, Johnson
Out - Mayne, Mzungu, Clarke ( Inj ), C.Pearce

Team

Ibbotson - Dawson - Sutcliffe
Sherridan - Johnson - Spurr
Hill - Mundy - D. Pearce
Walters - A.Pearce - Weller
Taberner - Pavlich - Ballantyne
R- Sandilands - Fyfe - Neale
I- Barlow - Griffin - Suban - Langdon

Out - Poor disposal, lack of speed and lack of scoring accuracy. Lack of scoring and running.
In - Youth, speed and key position experience. Playing on and getting the ball quickly and accurately into the forward 50.
P.S. Barlow ( and I love this guy ) had a woeful game and must be very close to getting demoted. He seems to have lost a step and his disposal was very poor.

Interesting to hear on 6pr this morning that Barlow is fully aware about the 'talk' about his poor disposal. He seemed very defensive and touchy on the subject, mentioning that he's on the edge each week thinking he'll get dropped.

anyway no way mayne is going to get dropped. I expect Johnson to come in for Clancee, Sandi for Clarke and that's it. Typical RTB. Would love Alex to come in but i'm not holding my breath.

The way I look at the changes is this way:

Mayne, Taberner, Mzungu, Clancee Pearce, Zac Clarke, Jonathan Griffin,Nic Suban, Deboer aren't good enough for this level...
Taberner gets a pass as he's tall and unless Apeness or Smith comes good he'll stay.

Barlow is marginal at best.
Apart from Taberner the guys in the list have had 6-8 years to prove their worth.

As far as I'm concerned when their position comes up in the selection board their name should only be put on the team list where there is no one younger to take their place...
We aren't winning a premiership with this list currently.

Fast tracking these kids, the same way Beveridge has done, the way Longmire is doing is a priority.
We need a new support group to go around Fyfe, Bennell and Neale.

We're now developing a list not premiership searching

I largely agree Lach although just with injuries and our list ATM it makes it hard for the first half of this season.

Mayne - his comp would be Bennell or Yarran or Mora so I would guess Mayne gets a few more games to lift.
Clancee - If you think of him as a HBF then probably Mora or longer term Hughes.
Clarke/Griffin - TBH I think we seriously need to consider if we should be playing TWO genuine rucks. Would be just as happy with AP or even Dawson going into the ruck for 10% of the game. Two rucks makes us less mobile and versatile.
Suban - I am actually ok with Subes and think he plays the roles he is given. Doesn't mean he couldn't do better.
Mzungu - Langdon or Crozier. Langdon plays another game like his last and he should be playing. Crozier needs to play much better still to replace Gu.
Barlow - should be on ball only dishing it out to more skilled players, his delivery into the F50 is killing us. Blakely or Mora maybe.

The other side of the coin is the tactics - the amount of space we were giving them. Was this just workrate or being caught between the old game plan and a Hawthorn spreading style. I would give it a few weeks but if we get pumped by WC as I would expect and Hawthorn keep marching on as they have done then I think the calls in personnel need to be made because there is no point just making the finals to make up the numbers.
