What’s our opinion on AJ? Is he another VFL star but can’t bridge the gap at AFL level?

Patrick Karnezis comes to mind.
Second effort is an issue. He's really flat footed and slow to react. if he can sort that out he'll be a player, if he doesn't he'll struggle to be an automatic selection.

I feel like Ginni is suffering second year blues (I know this is his third season, but it is the follow up season to his break out year, so I feel that description is apt). He hasn’t been able to consistently string good form together unlike others going around at VFL level, and if you are going to drop someone from the senior team for form, the person you bring in needs to be in better form, which I don’t feel fits with Ginni this year unfortunately.
Still trying to come up with a better player to bring in especially if we have 3 forced changes. Everyone mentioned so far has not convinced me they are a better option.

I feel like the group is playing without the flair and dare that was so evident in the first 2/3rds of the season, the ball movement has almost grounded to a halt for whet ever reason, we have been at full strength the last fortnight and played our worst football of the year.

The fix, recapture that dare and free flowing style and we can get back to being at the top of the pack come September, we have 3 weeks to work on this and in theory only need one more win to confirm that top 2 spot!

I cant think like a coach, as Ive never been one... been a manager, a director, a business owner.

From that perspective, I'd suggest diversity is key. You do want difference and diversity (i.e. differing skills)

So Id suggest a yes.

But, i have no idea about coaching sporting team, and a sporting team at an elite level..... so... i have no clue
As a manger you would reward performance via promotion and or compensation increases.
This is no different.

If we are talking selection integrity, watch WHE get selected after being dropped, and being invisible in the 2’s as a seasoned afl player
To be fair, I think WHE offers so much structure to the team. His work rate up and down the ground is huge and provides width to the ground by his running capacity

What I'd like to see on Friday night is players actually committing to the aerial contest again and not being suddenly so worried about getting hurt.

Lost count over the past 2 weeks of how many players haven't gone when it's their turn. Pendlebury and Crisp have done the "stick one mit up" a couple of times. Even JDG tried to take one with one hand on Saturday.

Then Maynard just pulling out letting their ruck take an easy chest mark 🫣
Yeah good call out… it feels like we’re in self-preservation mode for finals. Bad habits to be forming.

On yesterday’s VFL match alone Harrison, Ruscoe, McInness, WHE, Allan and Ryan were among the AFL listed players in better form than Ginni. Would have also thought if Macrae had recovered from his hand injury (last weeks injury report suggests he could be available this week) he would be ahead of Ginni too. Not sure why Carmichael didn’t play yesterday. I know Fly confirmed they withdrew Frampton as he would come in for Murphy and there was a 5 day break between the VFL and our next match, so if he wasn’t injured it’s possible Carmichael was also heard over to come into the senior team.

100%

And this is my issue

The issue is (also our fault), the two players that may have actually come in this week to replace a bunch of old bodies and/or injured players are now injured themselves.

Something I just thought of, I'm actually surprised Fly didn't consider resting Nick for the Hawthorn game. He was never going to have an impact with Maginness locking him down and not playing him might have actually thrown Hawthorn's plans completely out the window. Nick would have also got a freshen up

Who else though? Were looking slow. We can't bring in another plodder and all the other smalls in the conversation are plodders, except for Harrison, who doesn't do that much in the VFL either.

We need to get back to our close space game without ball, it gives us turnover into transition game, for whatever reason we didn't execute, whether by design (doubt it) or whether we just weren't able.

Arrest oppo uncontested mark / possession, so the hawks readily had options in space to achieve that belting. Maybe Mitchell caught Fly on the hop and played an unexpected plan that Fly wasn't ready for, allowing Sicily that sort of time and space is odd, even more peculiar not being able to arrest this in game. On the counter Mitchell played the tag on Naicos to perfection.

Arrest oppo smashing at cb, again this is where Titch seems to have lost form and Tay hasn't taken up the slack, Degs has also lost his inside to outside burst from stoppage, instead getting caught htb.

Not sure why these areas of form drop off have come to pass, apart from these we aren't too bad.

Training load? Jen2310 has been watching training and has alluded the load up has not been huge.

Between the ears? Possibly, but again Fly in his presser suggested as a unit we prepped as always for this upcoming game, not certain it's this.

Looking further ahead to finals and focus loss? I wouldn't imagine Fly and the panel would allow this to creep in, possibly has into the younger team members though.

Team illness? Fly has strongly suggested we don't play players who aren't ready to play, even separated training of players with illness from the main training group.

'Managing' form given our ideal style is not game long sustainable, and our favourable ladder position? Possibly, but I wouldn't imagine the panel and the mc would be willing to deliberately flirt with form.

Have we actually been out of form for most of the season? To be honest apart from a qt here and a qt there to get the job done, we haven't set the world on fire since rd 2.

In that game we had all the hall marks, like close space without ball and create turnover and win stoppage clearance/ cb to gain our speedy transition game. Get back to that and we win this week, can / will we?

Agree with this. Hawks (and Carlton) ran and spread so well, constantly able to easily find team-mates in space. They just picked their way through our zone defence so easily and made us look embarrassingly unaccountable.

Especially glaring was our inability to apply sustained pressure, best demonstrated by how many times the Hawks found an unmarked team-mate in their F50.

I do believe the accountability/pressure issues are fixable. I’m not so sure about the centre clearances. Two days later and I’m still in shock that we could lose that stat 3-18. To win only three clearances across four quarters of football defies comprehension.

If any of the players listed had a 20 plus possession game yesterday which stood out I would agree but they didn’t. Apart from maybe WHE I would have Ginnivan, the proven AFL standard player at this time of year.

The silver lining with losing star players to injury is it can sometimes force you to rejig and find strengths you didn’t know you have. Then when they return you might have more options than you did previously. Think back to 2018 when Fasolo and Elliott were not factors in our team, and we discovered WHE, Thomas, De Goey and Stephenson could all fill out and be good forwards.

If we’re a deadset premiership contender, we’ll execute something new in the next few weeks and win games soundly.

It’s tough I agree. Just he’s one player im a fair bit over. We keep hearing about his lauded running capacity, and yet he doesn’t tackle, mark, or get the ball. He will have a good game every 6 weeks. Needs to do more than guard grass, which atm isn’t working anyways as teams are picking our zone apart. Frustrating. There’s calls for lippa to be dropped. I certainly prefer lippa to WHE

Another thing to remember is Ginni plays as a small forward and doesn’t have much flexibility to play anywhere else. In order to get in he’d have to displace Hill, Elliott or McCreery. Which one are you leaving out to bring him in?

Geelong have lost to Freo and fell over the line against half strength Port.

They aren't exactly setting the world on fire.

I expect a big response and a win next week.

Interesting you assume Geelong will continue their form line, when more often than not this season, it's been shown that teams pretty consistently "get up" to play us.

I said Hawthorn would play their best game this season before Saturday and they did

Geelong will 100% play the best game they've played for a while on Friday

This is the other reason I don't see us winning another game. Because we don't have the luxury of playing teams who are off (or extremely rarely, like Gold Coast). So we can't actually afford to be out of form and win. Yeah, we can be "off by 5-10%" and still win games, but we can't be in flat out poor form, which we are now.

Again, the only thing we have to hold onto right now, is an against the grain massive form turnaround. Which appears unlikely given the injuries we've just copped on Saturday.

Unfortunately Murphy’s injury means we lose the flexibility to use Howe and/or Frampton in other roles. Frampton in particular needs to settle in one position in case he’s needed in September.

As a result of Frampton not being a ruck option, I think Cox has to return at the expense of Ash. Ash has had enough chances this year to get going when he needed to and he hasn’t. Time to work on breaking into the team for 2024.

Crisp needs to play guts now to provide the drive that Mitchell and Adams don’t.

The 4 changes I want (yes I know 4 is next to no chance of happening)
Murphy out, Frampton in
Nick Daicos out, Hoskin-Elliott in
Johnson out, Cox in
Lipinski out, Ginnivan in
Mitchell to sub, Markov to start

I know Ginnivan’s form doesn’t warrant a recall, but I agree he has a spark and simple goal kicking nous that our current smalls don’t have. Hill to get more experience playing wing to fit Ginni in.

And enough of playing Cox as a deep forward who rucks 20% of games. His best footy is played further afield

B: Brayden Maynard - Billy Frampton - Jeremy Howe
HB: Oleg Markov - Darcy Moore - Isaac Quaynor
C: Steele Sidebottom - Taylor Adams - Josh Daicos
HF: Bobby Hill - Brody Mihocek - Beau McCreery
F: Jamie Elliott - Dan McStay - Jack Ginnivan
R: Darcy Cameron - Jordan De Goey - Jack Crisp
I: Scott Pendlebury - Will Hoskin-Elliott - John Noble - Mason Cox
Sub: Tom Mitchell

E: Patrick Lipinski - Ash Johnson - Trey Ruscoe

Ginnivan was in the bottom 4 for disposals, and bottom 3 if you only include AFL listed players.

I would go back to play natural forwards in the forward line so Adams and Lipinski come out of the forward line and for this week become part of the midfield rotations given Nick is out and Mitchell needs a refresh.

Kicked a couple though which is handy. He was an emergency on the weekend so ahead of others who I think did not do enough to go past him.

Six disposals doesn’t keep him ahead of the others - it would be a sad indictment on selection criteria if it did.
And 2 goals as being enough is barely arguable.

Your current posting is essentially that every other team can and will improve if having a form slump, except for the team that is on top of the ladder having only lost 4 games. Their form slump is beyond repair and they won't win another game.

You're on a ridiculous spiral.

I’m worried that he lacks competitiveness despite his brilliance.
If Kreuger keeps improving I think his competitiveness will be a clear advantage that will see him pass AJ.
Or maybe even Checkers, he doesn't have a mortgage on CHF, boy has he stunk it up over the last few weeks- time for a shake up
