I'd like to see Tomlinson/Turner/JSmith down back to see what impact it has on Lever's performances. Can't pinpoint exactly when they started going downhill, but would presume likely when Petty moved forward and Pig returned. He's a third tall, not a second.

Yeah I think it just simplifies it for him. He concentrate solely on marking and intercepting and not about his starting position. He's not as good at doing both. Especially because I think he needs the freedom to position others without worrying about himself
I fully agree with this. Lever is the Marshall down back but he is also a massively confidence player. If he is being beaten and making stupid mistakes like he did yesterday, his leadership suffers as well because he goes into his shell.
If you get him back to playing the role he is best at, he takes a few grabs, does some good spoils, lifts his confidence and improves his leadership on the day.

Im not buying the Lever needs another tall back there narrative, dropping easy marks and making dumb decision doesnt change if we have 5 talls around him.

Just speculating, but I think having an extra tall that is directed to simply lockdown releases both May and Lever to play to their full potential. May can play stopper or interceptor, but he'll have the confidence to make the right decision in the moment if there's lockdown defender behind him.

This in turn lets Lever not worry about his direct opponent as either the third tall / lockdown defender will shift and cover him or May will make the decision to move to him, depending on everyone's position. This way Lever can play to his strengths and get the best out of himself.

Because he's not playing to his strengths he's down on form. Because he's down on form he's down on confidence. So now he's ****ing up the basics too.

We need to look at what our defensive structure was like at it's best and get back to that.

We can try Tomo as that third tall now, but if he's genuinely cooked for good it leaves us with a choice on Petty. I hate to say it because I like what he brings up forward, but if it comes to it we should probably send him back. I think we can sort out some of our forward issues with coaching, regardless of personnel.

I get all that, but that mark he dropped 1 vs 1 against Amiss yesterday has literally nothing to do with having an extra tall back there, same with getting caught holding the ball, shit kicks. Hes just in shit form.

The other issue the last few weeks is May is getting dragged all the way up the ground all the time. This means we have Lever vulnerable, Hibberd as a key defender and one of our best kicks not there to launch for us. Against Freo we were down around 30 points on our season for average for score launches from defensive 50.

IMO, bring Tommo in until Petty is ready, then get the tall forwards settled (whatever lineup) and let them get used to each other again. We've chopped and changed so much yet their wondering why the "connection" isn't great.

don't get sucked into playing Tomlinson again. he lacks mobility, struggles with ground balls, and he pads his stats massively in the VFL with short 20m kick outs then runs past for the handball receive (effectively doubling up on nothing possessions) and a bunch of switch kicks under no pressure. i'd consider playing him if May was out but that's about it.

Totally agree. I just can't think of any other way to play him back into form.

Completely agree, but after how Turner looked against a bigger body in Casboult I can guarantee Goody goes with Tomo, its an absolute certainty imo.

Lets just keep rotating in cooked blokes that shouldn't be on our list week in week out. Team selection is super exciting....Thennnnnnnnnn wonder why we havent improved as a team in a year and a half. I wonder what the problem could be? An absolute mystery, it couldn't be that we are playing blokes that are far worse than they were 18 months ago? Na, cant possibly be.

Any chance we stick McDonald back in the VFL and try get him playing on big bodies again? We have no KPP depth but we insist on keeping on trying with a guy who is cooked as a forward.

if we can't beat Carlton next week you may as well stick a fork in us for the season, we'll slide down to the bottom of the 8 and go out week one of finals.
Goody and co. need to change something 'cause it's just not working right now.

Who cares about his possessions. Is he doing a good job at defending?

Quite happy to swap out Salem for Tomo. Salem was rushed back in and has proven nothing.
Thought Salem was one of our better players yesterday. Apart from Lever thought the whole backline held their colours well.

the same could've been said when Essendon spanked us weeks ago. We're just not that good anymore unfortunately. Collingwood could smash us by 80 at the moment.

The issue with Salem is cultural. Straight back in off no break. He’s been ok since he came back though.
Generally I think he's been defending well. Still mostly getting dinky touches but hasn't been terrible. However it has pushed Gus up the ground more which is a net loss for the team

I put up a comprehensive review in the VFL thread.

For the purpose of this thread, either Brown or Schache in for McDonald based on their VFL performance.

Not that those guys are knocking down the door, but nobody else really stood out.

Tomlinson got a stack of the ball, but I thought he had poor moments defensively and also with his disposal decision making.

Turner has a quieter game for intercepts but I thought he was solid defensively and ball in hand so may be a chance.

Laurie playing more as a forward flanker was creative and potentially in for Chandler if he needs a rest or to find form at VFL level.

Melksham was his normal self so the specter of his selection as sub remains a possibility. He did torch Carlton last year.

We aren't any worse with Salem not in the team. Hes just there. Perfect trade candidate.

So your answer is to keep in the same players who are worse than they were 18 months ago...

You must have missed the part where I said its time to play Laurie, Howes, Turner and Woewodin. Try and keep up.

Must have. Probs got lost in all the whinging posts tbh. You do go for quantity over quality.

Who are you dropping for them?

I'm with you on Howes and Woey, but can't see Laurie or Turner having any kind of impact of note.

TMac and Harmes should never be in the side ever again to start with. Dont have to bring all 4 in at once, but stop going back to well on the same blokes who havent got it done for 18 months. If we are going to be average do it with some young blood. Might find another McVee and actually get better rather than getting worse. You wont know if you dont try them.
