I agree with others. Tough call but I'd probably have Scott sub, always plays a role but think he is behind Williams, Baker and Smith in that outside mid role and would prefer Weightman, Jones and McNeil starting as the pressure forwards.

I don't fully trust our defense but they were good in the second half and no one is really banging down the door at VFL level. Would be happy seeing Cleary get some games ahead of Duryea but don't see it happening yet.

Am I the only one who thought Gardner was actually quite good and should definitely come in for Keath? I must have been watching a different VFL game.
I didn't but didn't think he was bad either. At the moment he is not an improvement on Keath but with more game time I would expect him to be in our best 22 given he did finish in the top 10 of our B and F last season.

Needs to back himself more for the Mark in the VFL to take more control of the game but given his delay to the season he is tracking ok

Our depth is poor atm
Depends on what way you look at it.

Out depth ro replace our top 10 to 12 is no good.

However, depending on who is out there is at least 20 players who can play as the next 12 to 10 players and we do not weaken our team.

We really do need to top up with 3 to 4 class young players at the end of the year, preferably through the draft

I didn’t watch much of 2nd half but I thought he was poor in the first. Good defensively but he dropped at least 4-5 soda intercept marks. He doesn’t need to turn into LJ but geez he needs to swallow them when they fall in his lap.

I’m just not sure what he brings considering LJ is our number 1 defender now and does the job defensively. I know Keath has been down but at least he can mark the footy in the 2nd defender role, I’d probably just be using Gardner if there’s a specific match up for him ie the real athletic types like Cameron etc

Anyone calling for McNeil to be omitted should watch that second half again. He and Arty Jones provided more small forward pressure in that game than we've had almost all year. He stays in the 22 for mine.

Assuming Liber is good to go, I think Scott is the only one who will struggle to hold his place.

Bizarre really. We are looking for small pressure forwards, have 2 doing the role well and want them dropped for whatever reason.

For those who do not understand the small forward role look at the stats for Richmond's small forwards in the 4 years they won 3 flags and made a prelim

Yeah I’m not sure what people want, every forward needs to kick 40+?

It’s so obvious the difference having a couple of guys who are pressure maniacs but actually have some forward nous playing there compared to the rotation of crap mids

That’s the same with every side though. It only took Gawn & Petracca to be a bit sore and Melbourne were just a side in last years finals.

Richmond kept their best 10-12 on the park every week for 4 years….makes the difference. A statue at Punt Road of their conditioning team should go up before any player.

Again, get some injuries and they come right back to the pack. Probably due for a rebuild now too.

Pies, Port & Saints seemingly have 35 B graders on their lists, which makes replacing players easy & allows consistency with a good game plan & coach, but it leaves them vulnerable at the end of the year vs teams with more match winners (which includes us).

We need to keep building our bottom end (which has been awful) and yep, the next draft or 2 are really important.

Get a couple of gun mids that can learn off the best and also improve us a little short term, that’s probably when our window fully opens….with that coinciding with our 3-4 gun keys really hitting their straps.

Did anyone else at the game think Lobb was quite shite besides the two kicks for goal he converted? I felt like his lack of hunger and contest actually led to more goals against than the two he kicked.

Darcy for Lobb???

Lobb needs to stay in although I do think he looks disinterested when he doesn't have the ball.

Have a look who brought the ball to ground to get the stoppage where Daniel kicked his goal,

If you stop wanting Lobb to fail you'll realise he is playing his role just fine and is a significant upgrade to Cordy and Schache

Would have Gardner in for Keath, but it’s somewhat concerning that we’d be dropping Keath for his panicking with ball in hand and bringing in…Gardner. Who has come a long way but is still not who you want having to make decisions. And even if Bruce was available, he was shiting himself too.

But we pumped Gards up all last year, gave him 3 years and need a replacement for Keath - makes no sense to keep him in the vfl any longer.

Is that just his playing style though? Did he play like that at Freo?

We have righted the ship winning 4 of the last 5 but still look a fair way off the pace to be challenging for a flag. Still it is long season and our next 4 games are all winnable if we can get 3 wins and be 7 wins 4 losses at the half way mark we are in the mix.

Scott sub - Libba in.

The club need to persist with Arty and McNeil as pressure forwards, the modern game demands it. Get back in defense to help out and then run on the turnover.

Scott cannot play this role, so he is out for mind. I still want Buka in the side as another mid sized athletic defender yet wont be this week.

Yes. I think he's always going to be a polarising figure wherever he plays because his body language can look poor and when he's out of the contest he can look particularly ineffective.

He would rarely tear games apart (our game vs Freo last year aside) but he plays an important role in a difficult position.

Scott plays his role much better than Hannan or McComb but still very limited with his skills and size/athleticism. Still generally dependable on doing whatever job is asked of him though. At his age, l with his low ceiling and his versatility he should be the ideal sub for us. If he’s the worst player we have out there (inc as sub), we’re doing ok - or at least much better than when we’re carrying a couple of others along with him.

Toby as the sub makes no sense as Bev won’t play him anyway, ideally you don’t make a fringe young player (ie Buku, West, Garcia etc) sub either as they benefit more from a complete vfl game. Scott isn’t getting any better, he doesn’t lose or gain much from being sub.

Scott as sub with a McNeill or AJ as our ‘worst’ out there means we’re travelling a lot better in that C grader department than we were the first few rounds (and at many other points in bevs tenure).

Libba for McLean.

Shuffle the magnets for the unlucky sub role.

I wouldn't be averse to swapping out a shaky Keath who's lost his ability to intercept mark for Gardner, but I doubt it will happen.

Otherwise after the folly of playing a side with 4 KPF and a KPF orphan playing as a KPD in the first 2-3 weeks. The side is starting to coalesce around its best 22. I dont think it's a coincidence that we've seen an upswing in form since we pared his boneheaded strategy back a bit.

It feels like Bevs just such a sucker for training output that it seems to completely override what actually happens on the field. Every year we get somewhere close to our best team by half way through the season, the positional experiments fade out, the poster boys lose their automatic selection and we start to pick teams based on merit.

But then every year in round 1 it’s back to the same old shit because he’s blinded by a hard worker in the preseason. This year we seem to have adjusted a little earlier though so fingers crossed it stays that way.
