No acknowledgement that Duursma was tagged all day.

Yep. It's the biggest challenge that kids like him will face. The opposition knows he's the goal scoring, link man weapon they must shut down at SANFL level. Keep him quiet and a win is there for the taking.

Getting confidence is tough in that environment. Really needs as much quality around him as possible to take the focus off him. If we can get Mayes and Dumont pushed out of the AFL side for example, that'd create a lot of opportunity for him.

Changes wise, I wouldn't make a change. We're clearly missing Lycett, but that's short term pain for long term gain anyway. In fact we are probably extremely lucky Lycett got injured. We clearly need some more zip at half forward, but Fantasia is not coming back any time soon. If we could replace Drew with a superstar mid as well I'd be pretty happy, but we don't have them laying around.

We need to get Georgiades in at some stage, and with Bergman, Jones, Duursma in the 2's we have talent there, but I'm not sure Dumont, DBJ or Motlop are going out for any of those at the moment.

Honestly expect us to lose pretty comfortably. The game is crucial for us, win and suddenly things look alright for making the 8. Lose and its nearly gone, but I don't think we have the ability to win this on the big stage under the Tigers pressure. They will score too easily and we will struggle.

Duursma is a 4th year player. He should be better. Significantly better.

Mead and Bergman are 3rd year players. They too should be better.

He didn't clip a bunch of 18 year olds. He clipped guys that should be part of our 22 but aren't because they are under performing. Nothing wrong with that.
I don’t disagree with them getting a talking to. More the public nature of it. They all seem like solid guys, I mean Duursma is practically a choir boy (or seems it), are they the types that need a public clip? Would have thought an in house chat was the way to go. As compared to a Ladhams, SPP etc who had some off field issues that they needed to sort out so their footy could flourish?

How often to other coaches/teams do this?

Didn’t Kochie get a talking to when he said the players needed to be better a few years back?

But maybe the club has tried in house chats and the players aren’t responding. So bad players? Bad message? Bad coaching?

Footy manager Chris Davies declaring Xavier Duursma and Miles Bergman don't deserve to be playing in the AFL side 9 News Adelaide

IN - Duursma, Georgiades
OUT - Drew, Finlayson

We desperately need to get Duursma and Georgiades back into the team, it's just stupid playing such high quality young talent in the SANFL given the fact the season is basically done and we've got an ageing team.

Drew for me hasn't been playing well enough to justify being an automatic selection in the midfield.

Finlayson has been OK but I just think he's a low ceiling player and the development of MG has to be a priority.

Willem drew? The guy who according to AFL player ratings is our best performing player this season and currently sits 42nd in the AFL for this season on average ratings.
Now I know AFL player ratings aren’t always a good indicator, but to be dropping him ahead of someone like dumont or Motlop is a bit of a joke. He’s been good this year. Averaging 4 clearances, maybe he needs to get slightly more ball but he’s also getting 6 tackles a game and his contested possession percentage is very impressive he’s also going at 80% disposal efficiency which is impressive given his ratio of contested to uncontested touches. He is the only person who regularly makes his defensive efforts have a legitimate impact, regularly getting smothers in close and big tackles. Duursma has barely averaged 18 touches a game at AFL level let alone 6 tackles or 4 clearances. He’s not better than drew.

Hinkley is a 10th year coach. He should be better. Significantly better.

Where's his clip?

CD’s presser was ruthless. Bit unfair and public. Maybe there are issues behind the scenes that we are unaware of but Duursma, Mead and Bergmann don’t come across as the kind of guys that need a public whack. The SANFL team hasn’t come across as having the highest standards or being competitive but not sure that’s on the aforementioned players. And that’s really an afl and sanfl club wide issue. We haven’t looked fit, well drilled or competitive at all this season. We’ve had multiple injuries and they’ve all dragged on. And selection and list management has been a struggle this year.

So in short, I don’t think the below plan will happen due to what Chris said. But for the tigers we need to beat them on the inside in order to beat them because their game plan destroys ours if they win clearances.

Our list is deficient in multiple areas but we have a dearth of HBF/wing/HFF types.

So leave the bones of the backline and forward lines as is.

And then remove the under performers and bring in anyone we can rotate in the middle.

Out: Motlop

In: Jones, Mead, Duursma, Bergmann and Frederick. Whoever plays at SANFL and trains the best comes in. Their role is defensive forward and centre mid rotation. Mead probably fits the best but Bergmann the most talent, Xavs the fittest and Jones the most versatile.

On notice: DBJ, Farrell and Drew. Bonner gets some time to come back.

I would consider rotating Boak and Gray for games off during the season and would be letting Amon, Houston and Dumont know that they are in until two bad games, then they’ll play SANFL.

We need to be tough and fair at selection and have integrity. Pick the side that will win and get us to finals (ie no gifting games, everyone earns their spot) but which a view to the future also (ie lift post Boak and gray).
I think Houston would be close to leading our B&F.
Mind you I enjoyed reading this post.

I must be the only one that thinks DBJ has been alright this year and has improved on what we saw last year. Defensively he's better, he's being smarter with the ball and he's getting in better positions. I feel he's been alright.

Motlop as well hasn't been as bad as what some have made out. Has he been excellent? No, but he's been alright and we don't exactly have anyone consistently knocking on the door to knock him out the team.

Duursma, well he needs to lift. This whole the club has screwed him because he's put on a normal amount of weight storyline is rubbish. Fact is his last 2 1.2 seasons have been on a steady decline. Requesting he has an AFL standard body to go with his frame is not screwing him over.

Davies is right though, its up to those players in teh SANFL to play out of their skin to get into the team. As Janus said, in 2014 we had Stewart, O'Shea, Moore, Young, AhChee, Newton, S Gray, Logan all putting up obscene numbers in the SANFL and we couldn't fit them all in. Its up to Mead, Bergman etc to get to that level.
Not often I disagree with you Macca but I gotta say DBJ has been ordinary.
His disposal has been poor. Some of his efforts at the contest were highlighted on one of the footy shows. I think it was footy classified.
It wasn’t good viewing.

Anybody calling for Georgiades over Finlayson loses their right to complain about gold passes forever. On form Georgiades isn't fit to tie Finlayson's boots.

It's not about form, it's about potential. We're not contending for shit this year and probably not for a while after that. The priority needs to be on what the team looks like in three years, not right now.

Finlayson is 26, has been in the system 8 years and is a known quantity. He's at best a B grader and has a history of struggling in big games and against good teams.

Georgiades is a very talented young player with A grader potential who should be getting development time in the AFL not the SANFL.

Yes Finlayson struggled to find consistency at the Giants but that wasn't helped by them playing him as a key defender for the first part of his career. When he was shifted up forward in 2019 he was a key part of the reason why the Giants made the Grand Final - kicking 44 goals and in the top 20 AFL players for marks inside the forward 50. This is not 'B grader' stuff IMHO.

But he is not over the hill at 26 and has only just joined us. It would be madness to dump him for reasons other than form. How he is used is the key issue.

And frankly on form and potential Finlayson deserves his spot. While his goal accuracy has let him down he has played some good games for us. Best of all he has a good tank and has a capacity to run his defender ragged running up the ground. Reckon he has the potential to be a key forward for several years for us if he keeps up his consistency and kicks straight.

I agree with Schulzy - he has earned his spot and easily ranks above Georgiades.

He's had as many shots as Marshall and more than Finlayson. It's all a mental thing for him. Mind you Finlayson's goal kicking has nearly been just as poor.

Finlayson has kicked 8.2 against the bottom 3 and 5.8 against the rest. He is a player who doesn't handle pressure, which means he was basically born to play for Port Adelaide.

I definitely see him as someone that could become that next Schulz for us, but at the same time I agree with you, he screams yet another weak willed, jump at shadows, zero self confidence type that under pressure just goes missing.
