Again? This is probably the biggest fallacy currently going on around these parts. Jamar may not be what he was a few years ago, but he is still a very good tap ruckman (something which Gawn currently is not excelling at).Another 35 hit outs today against the runners up no less.
He's also markedly improving his attack on the ball around the ground and is finally learning how to mark it out of a kick in - something only he, Clarky and Dawes have proven they can do. We (myself included) were all calling for him to have a spell early in the year, but Spencer's efforts simply proved in my mind that he will be our first ruck throughout the year and probably into next year too.
Pedersen didn't play ruck once today, FWIW. Only Jamar and Fitzpatrick.
We really can't afford to discard another 100 game + Melbourne bloke either.
Jamar is fast becoming obsolete. He gets his hit outs and still has the same positive attitude but is way too slow and as for his marks on kick outs the horse has bolted, he's nearly 30 - a case of better late than never.
If we don't start rotating our rucks now and getting games into Gawn we'll be in a whole world of trouble next year.
I'm not saying we shelve Jamar, after all he's contracted till the end of next year but we should keep him fresh and treat him as a bonus ruck more than a stock ruck. Sure we can play him next week but I think we need to change the way we think about our ruck setups in general from now on. 12 valuable games left to get some genuine senior experience into Gawn. I'd like to see him play 7 or 8 of those at least.
