Yeah the contract does appear a blunder but in the heady wake of our first premiership in living memory crazy things happen.

Realistically what Dees should be doing is saying to Clayton’s manager, “if you want to leave you can, but you need to find a club willing to take on your contract and club who can compensate us accordingly or you are staying”

Then leave it to Oliver camp to scour some more clubs and see which ones bite.

The implications was that Pert rang clubs he thought had an interest in Clarry and THEN he had a meeting with Geelong. Not that he just chose Geelong after he heard he was on the outer.
Why would he choose a club that his manager would have told him probably doesn't have the capital? Why would Geelong players be so desperate to get him out to a farm 24 hours later?
Geelong meanwhile are spending a first rounder on a player who sprays it for days and who the doggies have barely missed.
If that is Smith's worth, contract or not pre 2023 Clarry is a dual all aus four times BNF winner.
I literally don't think Geelong can make this work.

It's actually kind of insane. It's impossible to tell if you're getting a player who will be a bona fide star or if you're getting ben cousins.

It's very much genuine but a long way from a done deal. The clubs wouldn't have even opened talks yet.

Scoops is alright once you realise that 1. The controversial stuff he says is opinion based and not something he is reporting to be true (IE. "they won't pick him Mitch") and 2. When a Journo is saying something and a club says it's not true 95% of the time the club is the one lying (IE. Saints not putting a contract the Merrett, Cox never meeting with Essendon in 2020 both of which very much did happen)

Looks like there really is something to it.
It's a strange one all around.
If Melbourne has had some issues which players might want to get distance from, Oliver himself was one of the biggest.
But can understand if he is looking to go and the relationship is too fractured the appeal of Geelong.
Probably the best run club in the comp, great best 22 apart from maybe being a touch off the best midfields. But Oliver and Smith change that overnight...
I don't really get Melbourne's perspective, unless they really just reckon the window is closed and they want to move on.
At his best he's comfortably top 5-10 in the comp and the Dees would be moving him on as a distressed asset, so they wouldn't be able to get the best deal.

The irony that a future 1st round pick from Geelong would probably mean the dees end up targeting Tairon Ah-mu, a guy in the dees nga academy that the afl made up some technicality to ensure we couldn't draft him. Off the back of Mac Andrew being ripped from us. Add in the mix that the afl decided not to allow the trading of future picks (2 years in advance) despite all the clubs being ready for it just at the time that the dees have 2 premium players wanting out. Thanks afl.

Fit and raring to go, yes.

Cleaned up his act has never been important to Cats. See Stengle still getting himself into trouble at the Cats, but that doesn’t mean he won’t win them flags.

Petracca is a better comparison. Both on long contracts, and wanted to leave.

Dees held trac to his contract because Collingwood couldn’t get a deal done.

Then you are quite welcome to keep him but Geelong are not offering you first rounders for him. The contract itself is enough of a risk (6 years on huge money that there's a good chance he won't even see out) without trading high picks as well. So you will keep him or you will sell at a loss those are the 2 most realistic options.

It's still like half the best 22 from a year or two ago. Even if they're not getting that much individually, they're mostly getting replaced by guys on draftee contracts

Dees have done a good enough job of that themselves with the ridiculous contracts they’ve handed out.
