This one doesn't shock me too much. If you've been watching the "Docker TV" things when they interview each player and ask them who their favourite band/funniest player etc is, Sylvia comes across as a bit of a derp. Which might be why it's taken him longer than most to adjust to Ross Lyon football.
Work rate might be another reason.

The coaching staff must find a way to get this guy up and going. We need more talent around the clearances.

Agree with that sentiment. Sylvia is older and with different issues no doubt, but they found a way to harness talent of Son Son Walters. Let's hope they can achieve the same outcome with Col over the preseason in getting his body right and equally the attitudinal stuff.

Walters was a 21 year old who was basically told work hard provide for your family or waste away and see where that gets you. Sylvia has been handed a 3 year deal and he doesn't have to do a thing if he chooses not to. Crowley also turned things around solely because he was on the chopping block.

Sylvia could for all his liking waste away at Peel and collect his big paycheck and there's nothing we can do about that.

I don't think he has the desire to compete. If he did he'd do it in his first year.

Playing AFL football in a team challenging for a flag was enough to make the bloke leave his friends, family and arguably far better lifestyle in Melbourne.

If he was a squib only interested in collecting a paycheck for appearing he could have stayed at MFC instead of fighting for a place in a strong team.

He's been injured this year, as some have said, let's reevaluate round 1 2015 when his first full preseason with the club is done before we write a bloke off for "lack of desire" who's turned his life upside down to move to the other side of the country, in a stronger team, with more competition, on less pay than he could have picked up at say Brisbane.

Nope.

I won't be changing my opinion on him.

I'm writing him off now.

His paycheck at Freo was more then Melbourne were offering and I dare say he wasn't really 'shopped' around. I'm positive if Brisbane offered him more he'd have gone there.

As I have stated previously, read the Melbourne threads. The guy had no work ethic and his own supporters saw it.

Unfortunately we tried to polish a turd.

All perfectly reasonable but the money was the same. Next season will end the discussion one way or another.

Maybe it was the reality check of the kids entering the frame that made him realise he needed to straighten up and provide for them. Has Sylvia got a GF? Besides Pokerspiv :straining: (.. i'm sorry) if so, give em some oysters or something to get them on the right track, otherwise i'm sure Seppo'll sacrifice for the club once again in silence and anonymity..

Col is right at the top of the list of players that if they come good next year could get us to a grannie. At his best hes ahead of de boer and suban and probably even guys like crozier.

He only has one more year to prove it though.

After a year of beng part of Freo's system he would know what is expected of him come pre-season. If he rocks up in good shape well then he gives himself every chance of playing round 1, if not I'm sure Ross will deal with him accourdingly. IMO pre-seasonn startes now for Sylvia.

Your'e right on this Jedi, its all up to Sylvia.
He should be working on his fitness now and returning to the club first minute of pre season.

Just come off ankle surgery so I think we can give him a couple of weeks for a rehab/holiday before telling him to get back on the track.

In principle yes, first minute of preseason.

Often hear players and coaches alluding to the difficulty of playing catch up when you miss a preseason. In the case of Sylvia, it was initially self inflicted given he rocked up in poor shape. Then compounded by injuries along the way and frustrations with a suspension and getting pressured from the group for not buying in (remember Ballaz having a crack at him after Sylvia played an alright game).

I just hope he's learnt a lesson in 2014. Clearly a bloke that has to be knocked into shape physically and mentally.

But I'm backing it can only go one of two ways for Col in 2015. The tail won't wag the Lyon.

He could have been what Robbie Gray has been for the Power this year. Both prodigiously talented players that have teased the competition for years. Robbie Gray has stated how doing his ACL in 2012 made him realise the finiteness of AFL footbal and that it caused him to take a new approach with his football and adopt a new level of proffesionalism.

For Sylvia, I think even if he has an epiphany and realises what he needs to do, it will be a year too late. I think we will be lucky to make the top 4 next year with our aging list surely starting to show some signs of decline. I feel with Sylvia firing this year at full capacity it could have added the final dimension that we needed to have a chance against Sydney at their best on grand final day.

I hope Col goes alright next year. Hopefully he's gotten the message that it's fitness first at the Dockers and he'll come back from the offseason in great shape. Give him a full pre-season with no injuries and he could just be a player that helps us get better next year.

The more I think about it, I wonder if he struggled to get to grips with the RTB game plan? He seemed to spend an awful amount of time running laps (due to fitness and injury issues).

Either way, at the moment he's a Freo player and I hope he fulfills his potential for us next year.

I had the identical thought, they are both very similar players. We can only dream.

Shouldn't stress about Sylvia. We're paying for him next year so there's no point in exiling him, metaphorically or otherwise. It's another test for Ross and the coaching staff: how to use the right combination of carrot and stick (stick-only won't work because he'll just sulk at Peel) to get the best out of Col.

We should see him as a huge potential upside if we can get him going, in which case I won't give a **** that he can't name the PM.

I think you will find that the Club lawyers would be ready to take legal action if they thought that he was not honouring his contract by not giving good effort and meeting fitness levels ,skin folds and such .
Just keep an eye out boys and see if you can spot him doing something stupid , Hang on it is Sylvia he will probably ring an friend and take a selfie.

Unless it's written in his contract why would he give a flying ****? I mean some want it and others don't.

In every profession you have dead beats where you think 'how the **** did this guy get this position'. Well he's our dead beat.
