Collingwood player saying no to a paycut

Saying your 196cm main forward isn't worth a half million is just blind.

The salary cap is there for a reason and underpaying players to stay under the cap isn't the right thing to do.

Why should Swan get more money than Cloke??

Can he take a pack mark and kick a goal from 50m?? No??? Why not??

Key forwards are worth big bucks. That's the simple fact of the game.

So Kosi is worth more then Hayes.

Mooney worth more then Ablett

Fevola worth more the Judd..last year ..hehehehe

The best players are worth big bucks. If they happen to be key forwards, yes they may get more but not necessarily more then your best player.

Don't blame Travis myself. His Dad is the problem - the Damir Dokic of the AFL - and if Travis was managed by a proper management company, he would be receiving much better advice. Take a 3 year contract for $1.2M and be done with it young man. And cut the ties was papa bear.

This. Definitely David Cloke just trying to up Travis' salary by a bit. I reckon he will re-sign.

He's closer to the money this time than he usually is.

It is not hard to be "close to the money" when it's common knowledge that Cloke has not signed and in fact stated in an interview he would wait to finalise his contract.

All Hutchy has done is word common knowledge vaguely eg. a "former best and fairest winner" to give the impression there is some mystery and then add his own speculation the delay is because he's been asked to take a pay cut.

Has he said anything we did not know about Cloke's contract that we did not know last week apart from the alleged pay cut?

Not a sausage.

Its a win-win situation the way i see it

if he waits til the end of the season, has a blinder of a finals series give him a pay rise.If he doesn't, he gets a pay-cut or he ****s off to the Gold coast and we a get a first round pick and dont have to watch him kick at goal for the next 10 years

When David Cloke is involved he will try and extort the club for every last cent. He was a mercenary of the highest order as a player and will do anything and everyhing for a dollar, and if that means sending his boy to Qld for a few extra pennies, he will do it, even at the expense of a potential premiership. And be assured he'll try and get Cam thrown in as a package deal.

The GC desperately need name players and at the moment havent signed anybody. They will throw more and more money at players without willpower to resist the money until they get a couple. If they miss out on Ablett they'll be even more desperate.

I think that if thats the case at the end of the season...do we need him?

2 of Dawes, JA, Brown, Rusling to step up to CHF & FF.

You've overlooked L Brown who at 28 has 4-5 years left in him and Reid - who is proabably a backman but no doubt could play at either end. Long term Goldsack could also fill a key position - probably in defence, and we also have Keefe tracking well.

We are blessed with tons of key position options, most of whom are young but experienced at the same time, and best of all many of them can play at both ends of the ground. I hope Cloke doesnt try and bluff the club for more than he is worth unless he is serious, because he could find himself traded anyway.

Good to see people get a chance to show their true feelings yet again, was a bit worried that all the haters had finally seen the light and the Collingwood boards would get a bit more boring :)

For all our great young KPP, not 1 of them could play CHF as well as Travis, look at Dawes the other week, played CHF and got about 5 touches for the whole game whilst Leigh Brown shone in his position at FF

He is the best mark in the club and about the only one of our forwards who is a great contested mark, this side is on the verge of a premiership, they cant afford to lose a couple of years developing a replacement for Travis, so the Club aint stupid and they wont be letting him go as easily as all seem to be hoping

No offense, but this is one of the most inaccurate posts ive read.

I reckon Leigh Brown adds alot - as a third/fourth forward. Expect more like North = disappointment.

Ben Reid had 0 confidence as a forward and has built his game to where it is as a defender. Why risk.damage that? Stupid

Goldsack - key position - fail. Not that player.

Blessed with Key position options? Yes. Blessed with AFL quality options up forward? No. We have a developing Dawes who will hopefully continue to become a dominant one, Anthony is a one trick pony who has been found out, L Brown great 3rd/4th option, N Brown is a defender who may be able to pinch hit, and Cloke who takes contested marks (not pack though). Our success id especially the small forwards like Thomas, Didak etc.

You take Cloke out and have L Brown with 2nd best defender and we will struggle to win big games. Look how well relying on a small forward line is doing Carlton?

You have no vision mate. None at all.

We have tons of key forward options in the advanced stages of their development (ie most of them have moved beyond VFL and are fast becoming 50 game players over the next year or so )and if Cloke doesnt want to be part of our future successes, we'll move on without him. He has just as many flaws as others on our list. What he does has in common with them is youth and talent.

Make no mistake Cloke is currently our best key forward. But thats why we are already paying him the most money. If he wants to extort the club for more he can pisss off because the other options are not far behind him and the salary we can save on him can ensure we keep all our kids, or alternatively trade in another senior player.

Must be retained at all costs in my opinion. A very important player. Has his best years in front of him and while there is no way he should be paid on a par with, say, Pavlich or Riewoldt, he should definitely be in the top 10-20 per cent of our list.
His manager is just trying to get the best deal for his kid and why wouldn't he? If he didn't he would be negligent.
For those branding Trav disloyal and greedy.... go easy. For a start he has gone nowhere yet and hopefully won't be.

You're entitled to your opinion.
David Cloke is also a father.

You talk shit.

Elsewhere in this thread you have stated what a big game player Cloke is...

Against top 4 sides since his best & fairest, he has kicked 9 goals in 16 matches, including a massive total of 0 goals in 6 games last year against Geelong, St.Kilda and the Bulldogs.

How in the world is that sort of record worthy of a $500,000 a season contract?

But he isnt trying to extort the club for more money, they are trying to pay him less than he is worth, big difference, nowhere does anyone say he wants 500-600k a year like we used to pay 1 key forward who was less talented, more overrated and is no longer with us

You are obviously talking about Tarrant. He is/was a far better player and will be remembered as a far better player.

Unless it is Craig Starcevich you are talking about, you're wrong (and premiership players are also exempt from being bagged)

he might be talking about Anthony or Taz.

As for Taz, he couldn't have ever held down CHF like Cloke does - but I agree he was better and could be remembered as such. But not if Cloke is a premiership CHF

I can't believe the amount of people that are bagging cloke based on something Hutchy said. This is the same guy who touted on Sunday that Didak was a long way off signing only for his signing to be announced the next day. It is not unusual for club and player to put negotiations on hold until the end of the season especially with finals just around the corner, because it is a very stressful time. Instead of focusing on Hutchy's crap why not look at Cloke's own statement where he said he loves the club, loves the boys and really wants to stay. Trav is not going anywhere. No way will Julie let David send one of her boys up to the Gold Coast (Cam only went to Adelaide because he had no choice). Trav is settled in Melbourne so just relax on the Trav is leaving hysteria.

Also those saying Trav is crap/over rated be careful what you wish for. You won't realise how inportant he is to the team until he is gone. Don't underestimate the marks he takes 70/80 meters out gives the defenders a great option coming out of defence. It's not all about goals, also don't take too much from the last two games one was against Richmond for god sake. Trav is still a vital cog in our team.

Beat up

And I reckon the parasite sucked us all in

Well he certainly sucked some of you in....... I always ignore this garbage........Just came in to see who had been suckered.............again:D

Just trying to remember the last time a player left a club PURELY for money purposes? Usually players leave if they aren't getting opportunities,in order to return to their native state or because they feel they need a change of scenery. None of these situations apply to Travis. Additionally, like others have said, the lure of staying at a club with the chance to win at least one and if not multiple flags and playing infront of 50 000 + people each week would have to be added incentive to sign. As far as I'm concerned, nothing to see here, everybody just move on.

Think Trav would split with his management rather than walk from the Westpac Centre. Blokes that age just aren't that motivated by coin.

Wouldn't be a bad thing if he split with management either. David strikes me as a tosser whilst Trav seems a decent sort. Does the Father still have that God awful mo?

If Trav did leave, as with Geelong and G Ablett, I suspect we would be OK. Whilst I have no doubt that a star, game breaking, CHF could mean multiple flags for Collingwood over the next 5 years. And whilst I believe that Trav has the potential to be that player. The simple fact is that he is not that player yet and time waits for no man. He may never get there. We would get some nice compo too.
