An emerging trend in the trading philosophies of some teams thus far in this trading period? A phenomenon that seems to revolve around what may be called 'strength-position-twinning'? We've had Neale and Dunkley and Gawn and Grundy as prime examples of this. The chief characteristic of the strategy appears to be that these teams are doubling up in areas of significant existing positional superiority. Nor does this seem to be sheerly a matter of simple succession planning (given the relatively minor age differentials of the 'twins' involved in comparison with that between an established player and a young recruit). In some ways, Collingwood seems to be adopting this strategy: Adams and Mitchell a prime example (and maybe, to a lesser extent McStay and Cameron?). The question is - other than providing useful injury cover - what is the primary purpose of doing this?
Not sure this correlation is meaningful or new.
Melb replaced Jackson with the best available Ruckman
BNE took a gun midfielder.

In neither case was age relative to their existing "Guns" ( twinning) critical to their selection - just coincidental IMO.

You're probably right that the correlation is neither meaningful or new. Please accept my apologies. It was, at least, thought provoking in that you replied. Thanks

I think Hill is a better example of us doubling down on a strength of our run and carry high impact low possession game.
Though not really a 'twin' of anyone in our side; so not entirely responding to the question asked?

Well, at least we're no longer discussing erections, I suppose!

So you see Adams and Mitchell working side-by-side at the contest? So do I, but that of course means that someone must make way from the best 22. Or maybe not, if next season it become best 23?
I think Adams and Mitchell are compatible in the team and around stoppage together. I think it's Pendles and Lippa who will see less stoppage time, as a consequence of Mitchell, if they're all fit.

Does that mean Lippa playing more forward of the ball, in your opinion, almost more in a half-forward role? And, if so, what might that then mean for the likes of Ginnivan and McCreery?

Most of the time Lippa was basically playing switcharoo with Jordy, with Lippa starting at half forward in the 6 6 6 and then playing as follower after the bounce and Jordy starting at stoppages and then getting slightly ahead of the ball in a high half forward/attacking mid role. I think that'll continue. I don't think it'll impact the genuine forwards.

I think it'll mean that Pendles will play a fair bit of back flank, like he was a the start of the year - or wing. So one of the flankers out being replaced by Mitchell in the best 22. But we'd need to be pretty lucky with injuries to get down to that much detail of who misses out. It'll be a week by week proposition depending on who is available for selection. But with Hill coing in as well, we're going to have a lot more depth regarding mids and flankers and from time to time you may get a pretty good player running around in the VFL.

Which is great - both good users of the ball and Lippa will be better not having to spend so much stoppage time where he can concentrate on distributing to advantage.

Would love to see him kicking into the 50.

I assume we need to have 36 players minimum on our primary list by December 1st?

If so that's 5 spots to fill.

The club has stated it intends to use at least 3 picks in the national draft. That leaves 2 spots.

Upgrading Noble leaves one.

So do we upgrade another rookie, take 4 picks in the national draft or select 1 player (DFA?) in the PSD?

If we don't upgrade 2 rookies that wouldn't leave us with the option of taking a player during the SSP (though I can't remember the last time we did that anyway) or the MSD unless a player was placed on the inactive list due to retirement or a LTI (assuming Murley isn't drafted by another club).

P.S- If we ended up drafting Brayden George could he not fill one of the required 36 primary list spots but also give us the flexibility to open up a rookie spot due to the LTI (ACL) he suffered in late August? Might be an added bonus.
