Given we have lost some half back defenders, I'd have thought improving our depth in that area was more key.

What half back defenders are on the table at the moment? Doedee has chosen Brisbane over us.

Would've thought Billings would just slot straight into Adams' spot, provided he was playing well enough to get a game. Would have to probably give him 3 years to smooth out his rumoured 500k pa 2024-25 deal.
I don't understand this. Are you saying we turn his next deal from currently $500k p.a. for two years (so $1m over two years) to $333k for each of three years (so $1m over three years?). Why would he do this? He has committed $1m over two, why would he stretch it out?

Maybe we give him 3*400 or something? Match payments? Earning opportunities outside of footy? I dunno. Regardless of their signed contract some players just need a fresh start and need to be playing footy.

I think Billings is a classy player who's worth having a look at. He's contracted for 2 more years however, which is likely to inflate his trade value.

In an ideal world we'd be able to send Adams to St Kilda in a deal involving Billings (and maybe a pick swap etc.), if Adams wanted contract security and more inside midfield time. It would be interesting to know whether St Kilda have any interest in any of our fringe players, as otherwise it's difficult to see both clubs becoming aligned on price/value.

It’s a head scratcher to me why it’s a head scratcher to you tbh. The only similarities between Mitchell and Adams are the types of players they are. In terms of trade circumstance, it’s apples and oranges, and that’s what counts here.
It's a head scratcher as the rhetoric is Hawthorn pushed out a 29 year old Brownlow medallist without any known baggage - in fact who appears to be an exemplary role model. They pushed a very good footballer with more to give and an enormous amount of IP to pass on to their young players. They supposedly only saved the cost of the average salary and got very little in trade return. I just don't understand it.

Given the arrogance Sam Mitchell projects, I don’t think he liked coaching the bloke Hawthorn originally kicked him out for.

Really wish we'd stop doing this. Especially in the McRae/Wright era.

I'll say it again...until proven otherwise, I'm willing to back the football department's judgement on players we plan to bring in.

Yeah, we're not going to nail every single one of them, but they've done pretty well thus far.

The only two players most here would almost unanimously agree were "misses" are Dean and Kreuger and in both those cases, the players have been ridiculously injury plagued and both haven't had a genuine opportunity to show their wares.
Wright and Fly have taken us from 17th in 2021 to a prelim in 2022 to a flag in 23. They obviously have no idea.;):)

What is it about Billings that's making some of you so horny?
Classy left foot, eye for goal and capable of crumbing off a pack.

The pick 3 doesn't hurt as it suggests there's underlying talent that St Kilda haven't been able to unlock. Despite this, he has played over 150 games of AFL, so he's not the 'bust' that a lot of people are trying to make out. Unfortunately for Billings, he was drafted a pick before Bont.

perhaps because they were committed to a list rebuild and had the likes of Jai Newcombe coming through, plus they also wanted to get rid of some of his salary.

Anyway who cares, it's been a great result for us.

Tom Hawkins hasn't signed yet. Do you want the nose picker in our team? 😂

Trade radio saying Tom Hawkins was open 2 mths ago to playing for another club if the contract offer from Geelong wasn't good enough. Still hasn't signed.

Forget Goldstein. If we can get Hawkins on a 2 year deal as a FA he would be absolutely perfect to squeeze the last 2 years of our current flag window with Pendles/Sidey. 49 goals this year, 67 last year. Still a gun KPF.

That’s not my point who is better, the fact that Beams was on the wrong side of his career, so never worth 2 first round picks we paid overs cause of Brisbanes’s negotiation ability.

Hard to make the case that a top 10 rated player in the league isn’t worth 2 late 1st round picks. Have a look at the AFLCA top 10 this year and tell me which 1 wouldn’t attract similar.

I think I'm just preparing myself for not getting much for Adams, as part of me is still stuck in the era of two firsts for Gibbs.

Billings is a slow hack, don’t know what we see in him
Skill level and smarts - Being a quick decision maker is more important to our game plan than being quick by foot.

I always thought he was good - He seems washed at this point, but I'm happy to roll the dice on him if he's basically free.

How does that inflate his value? If anything it deflates his value.

Adams clearly isn't going to change his mind about destination.

Wright was asked if Collingwood were keen on Billings and while he didn’t openly reveal that the former No. 3 Draft pick was a target, he did admit that they have a mild interest in the 28-year-old, pending that he’s the right fit for the club’s list.

“Not necessarily, he's another guy who's contracted as well,” Wright told AFL Trade Radio.

“I have heard his name around, but we have I suppose a mild interest.

“Not so much that we don't admire him as a player, it’s a matter of, ‘What’s the right fit for us?’.

“But no, I have heard that he might be having a look as well.”

SEN’s Tom Morris also reported that trade interest in Billings is growing after he appeared to have a lack of suitors just last week.

Morris believes the reigning premiers would be a great fit for the Saint as he looks to revitalise his career.

“The word around Jack Billings over the last five to seven days has shifted from what it was before that,” Morris said.

“There is talk around Jack Billings now (as a trade option), there wasn't talk around Jack Billings a couple of weeks ago.

“I’m not sure the answer to that (if they would pay part of his salary), but they will help him get there. I don't think they're going to ask for too much.

“He has two years to go on his contract on about $500,000 a year. He's keen to leave, his manager's keen for him to leave, the Saints are happy for him to go.

“I think there's an acknowledgement it’s the best thing for his career.

“It's just who wants to take him and looking at it from the outside I think Collingwood's a great fit for Jack Billings, a great fit.”

Given Billings is under contract, a trade would need to be facilitated for him to move on and Morris doesn’t think a rival club would need to give up much to secure a deal.

“A little bit, a little bit of later (draft) capital (is what they could get in a trade),” Morris said.

“I can't imagine them asking for too much. I think it gives them good salary cap relief.”
