Why do people care who’s better out of Horne and daicos? It’s borderline childish to constantly argue over it. They are kids.. These poor two are going to have so much scrutiny next year.
We should be happy there will be two elite kids as good as both of them that will be in the system. It's not a competition. They are two very different players, with different strengths. But in the end, both clubs will get what they want and need, that's all there needs to know.

There's absolutely no way we should trade our future 1st out at any cost.

TBH I'm still hoping that Sydney throws a large offer for Moore, who will easily qualify as band 1 compensation.

If we finish 2nd last next year, 3rd last or whatever, we'd have 2x top 5 picks to use in a KPP heavy draft.

That would be an unreal position to be in.

Even more ideal if we can trade those Pick 2 + Pick 3 for example to Gold Coast for Ben King. We should start getting our salaries back without Moore, and our front ended payments for Treloar/Stephenson should also start decreasing.

I genuinely think Darcy Moore is a top 10 player in the compensation if injury free.

But his durabiltiy is inexcusable, you just can't pay $900k or $1mil + a year to someone who only plays half the season.

(As bad as things were, imagine if we had to pay a club a pick 19 to take a player and his salary off our list like GCS are doing this year!)

They dumped Peter Wright's salary last year. Had May and Lynch leave a couple of years ago. They don't have a single player who you'd expect to be on big money. Despite a talented list, it's pretty scary for their future when they have to overpay as much as they must be, in order to keep their players.

I have no idea.

But people who did know our salary cap position are claiming we could have.
I know people who know our cap position who wouldn’t agree with that.

Last years very late damaging calls came after the Covid cap changes came about. I don’t think any club would have voluntarily taken those measures. Even waiting 12 months to allow time for a proper negotiation and to be able to properly test the market would have been a much wiser course of action

If we could have done that why wouldn’t have we?

Losing Moore would be worse than losing literally any other player on the list.

Agree except this year the injury was a collision injury and it could have happened to anyone. He was not injured once in 2020.

Would Sydney offer 1 mil to a player who is suspect when they allegedly have a very tight cap?

I get why it would hurt to lose him. He's imo one of the most influential players in the comp when fit.

But even if you look at someone like Petracca, close to being the best in the AFL.

You just cannot pay him $1mil a season if he only plays 50% of the season, and you have a top 3 pick + $1 mil free cap as an alternative.

Who’s paying him a million?

He's only had 1 season where he went 50 per cent or under. He would leave a huge gap, and Sydney have reportedly got cap issues too. Don't think anyone is paying him a mil a season. If he leaves so be it, but we can't afford to lose our elite talent atm.

I agree. If I was building a team for the current game, I'd load the cap towards mids and intercepting defenders - and a fit Darcy Moore is the best intercepting defender in the business. But like the poster you quoted said, a really big salary is a risk due to his injury history.

I am glad we didnt finish last as I would vomit knowing Horne could have been ours along with Daicos. It is quite a good 1-2. And both clubs sort of lucky they dont have too make a choice. Will be interesting to see how they go.

I was referring to comments Ed made this year about how the Club decided to make tough decisions at the time rather than “kick the can down the road”.

If we could have done that why wouldn’t have we?

Maybe to avoid an even worse predicament, for example: having to give away good picks to pay other clubs to take a player and their wage off our books?

I think it's pretty clear that we'd been kicking the can down the road since 2018. As we'd been asking blokes to back end deals since then and had shifted to riskier long term deals for our good players to reduce payments and make it easier to kick that can into the future.

Covid cuts and Beams payout and the can doubled in size. We probably could have exhausted our future by continuing to kick it, but it was clear that we weren't going to contend and having to kick a big can was going to make it impossible to catch up with the other runners in the race.

So I think both you and GC are probably right. We were stuffed, but we probably could have kept on growing the can for a while.

Foxfooty.com.au says: Essentially sold their 2022 farm in order to ensure they had enough points to match any bid for father-son prospect Nick Daicos, who is widely seen as a top-two prospect, if not the No. 1 guy at this year’s draft. They fully expect to pick up young Bulldog Patrick Lipinski either by trade or through the pre-season draft and have brought in Nathan Kreuger from Geelong for extra height up forward to assist Darcy Cameron and Brody Mihocek.

So according to fox footy giving up a 2nd rounder in 2022 is selling our 2022 farm. Seriously who employs these people!
Who the **** reads them!!

I posted on this thread 3 weeks ago and nothing has changed.

There is nothing surer than North picking JHF at number 1. They will not bid on Daicos just to spite Collingwood.

Have you watched this kid play in the finals against men.

As good as Daicos is and will be, right now JHF is ahead of him.

You'll see. Why do people say spite? It's not about spite. If you want the best player in the draft then you bloody well earn it. Daicos is clearly the number one pick in the draft, why would norf let collingwood have number 1 for nothing? I hope norf do take JHF with one, that would be a great result for for us, are you starting to understand

Does he mean “tight” as in we’re spending close to 100% whereas as list that just finished 17th really should be closer to 95%?

Or does he mean “tight” as in we’re actually in decent shape, but need to build a war chest for next year to cover players who are coming out of contract?

Or does he mean “tight” as in code for “player agents, don’t hassle us for big pay rises, we’re banking money for the future”

Don’t forget the club officials said that we didn’t have to offload our players last year -we chose to because it was better for our long term benefit

(As bad as things were, imagine if we had to pay a club a pick 19 to take a player and his salary off our list like GCS are doing this year!)
It could be a message to other clubs & player managers.

As much as Hill would be nice we aren’t in the market for a contracted best 22 player this off season.

GW and crew just need to focus on getting & keeping the necessary Daicos (Dib) points, nabbing our couple of cheap out of contract fringe types (Lip & Kreuger) and if possible getting another 2022 pick back in.

Back in Ginnivan/McCreery to be our small goal kicking pressure forwards.

Next year is the year we can try and get back in the bigger fish market (with our first and future first).

Unless GW thinks otherwise of course.

Ginnivan & McCreery both showed a bit this year & will get better, especially with another tall to crumb around. Ollie Henry will be good too, so our forward line doesn't look too bad. Better delivery will help too.

Kane Cornes is deliberately trying to stir up some attention.
Don't bite.
They also don't have much salary cap space. They let Aliir go for nothing and have had to let Dawson and Hewett go.

Moore wasn't all that likely to head to Sydney.
The biggest influence on him considering the move at the time has removed himself from the Club too (with the encouragement of a couple of fellow board members).

I don't think it's "clear" that Daicos is the number 1. There's no consensus at all actually.
