I don't understand why this hasn't been considered as part of our negotiating strategy but I have consulted AI to get a handle on the whole situation:

AFL. Collingwood football club are in negotiations with multiple clubs for the services of Dan Houston in 2025. How do you think this will play out?

ChatGPT said:

Collingwood's pursuit of Dan Houston suggests they're looking to strengthen their squad for the upcoming seasons. Given Houston's talent and versatility, interest from multiple clubs could drive up his market value.

If Collingwood can present a compelling case—such as a competitive playing environment or a strong chance at finals success—they might have the edge in negotiations. However, if other clubs can offer more playing time or better contracts, it could complicate things.

Ultimately, it will come down to how much both Collingwood and Houston want the move, as well as how negotiations unfold with the other clubs involved. It could lead to an exciting bidding war or a swift resolution if Houston has a strong preference. What are your thoughts on his potential impact at Collingwood?

My thoughts are infinitely complex, probably not something Artificial Intelligence could get it's head around. On a separate note, could you just tell us (Collingwood Football Club) how we get this done?

To successfully secure Dan Houston, Collingwood should focus on a few key strategies:

Clear Vision: Communicate a strong vision for Houston’s role within the team. Highlight how he fits into their game plan and the potential for growth.

Competitive Offer: Make a compelling financial offer that reflects his value, possibly including performance bonuses to sweeten the deal.

Engagement: Build a relationship with Houston and his management. Understanding his priorities—whether they’re financial, playing time, or team culture—can help tailor the offer.

Leverage Connections: Use existing relationships within the league to gauge interest and potential willingness from Houston’s current club to negotiate.

Timing: Be strategic about when to approach negotiations. Getting in early could give Collingwood a leg up before other clubs make their moves.

Support System: Emphasize the support network at the club, including coaching staff, teammates, and the club’s culture, to make the move more attractive.

If they can execute on these fronts, they’ll increase their chances of landing him. How do you feel about the club’s overall strategy in the current player market?

Rioli isn’t worth 6 (probably more like 15), we are getting reamed on that deal regardless. We should be able to limit it to just 6 but obviously that’s still too much.

Noble is worth a 29-35 pick, he’d be coming off our bench. And frankly we know we have Rioli coming with that overpay, so if Noble falls through so be it, we’ve just recruited a player in the same position. Especially since we can now get Melbourne’s F1 + 28 for 13.

And we’ve got Powell in our team along with Weller/Flanders. Noble is a good player yes, but he’s not a necessity when we are already recruiting Rioli.

And look if we take Melbourne’s offer we probably would offer slight overs and put up 23 for Noble since our draft hand would be very good, but again it’s not a needed deal for us.
So why aren’t they jumping on it? Seems like you have it figured out?

Must be some reason why they want to make it work with the Pies. Maybe to get a 1st round pick back in this draft? I can’t see how they can get that without Port having one.

What if GC want to keep 6 and offer Richmond 13 and a 2025 2nd round pick for Rioli?

Why did you offer Noble a contract?

We wont take 23 for Noble. Perhaps you shouldn't be chasing players under contract then trying to get them for nothing.
Are you sure that it wasn't Lucas approaching the Suns? In his interview on SEN this week stated Noble started questioning his future at the Pies after he was left out of the PF and GF and it solidified when he wasn't picked for the first 3 rounds this year.

The fact remains you don't nominate unless the club tells you they will get you there.

Let’s say we take the scenario (that won’t actually happen) that GC gets pissed off of its offer to Tigers re pick 6 + whatever for Rioli and deals it to us for Noble plus pick X + whatever else.

Is Pick 6 plus Richards then overs for Houston?

Or we keep, go to the draft with that or split with another club and re-offer Port for Houston?

Noble is worth so much more than that
You'll need to pay a good price for Noble and 23 is not it.

Shades of 2023 in reverse. Remember we were offering pick 19 for Schultz initially, but Freo knocked it back, before we coughed up F1.

I'd would be happy to knock back 23 if that's the best the sun's have to offer for Noble.

Think that would mean that Port's cap will be bulging. They will have to trade Houston. But that probably gives GC enough cap space to get Rioli and Noble.
That’s fine.
Let them do their own deal for that player.
Port Adelaide will have no first rounders this year and no first rounder next year….someone tell Cornes how weak their hand will be across the next few drafts.

They’re not gonna want to have that net result come the end of trade period

You’re not on the same page as your coach and footy dept.
They’ve offered Noble a 4 year contract. Rest assured the Suns want him and see him as a necessity. To argue differently shows a lack of understanding.
And if Pies don’t get pick 13, Noble will remain a Pie.

That might be easier.

Paul Roos stated Leppa is wanting to say "this trade week is absolute garbage, there is that many lies being told, I'm sick of it already, I can't wait to have a beer at the pub as I have never seen anything like this before"

Paul Roos is asking do these club really want these players?
